influence of the mechanics of escape on the instability of von mises truss and its control

Abstract The elastic von Mises truss model is a prototype for bi-stable structures. It allows a deep understanding of the static and dynamic buckling of several planar and spatial truss systems and shallow lattice shell structures, including the geodesic dome, and has a theoretical and practical interest. This structure has a highly nonlinear response in the presence of static and dynamic loads. The geometric nonlinearity is particularly significant even at low load levels when this structure is shallow. This paper presents an exact nonlinear formulation, which is used to investigate the mechanics of erosion and escape from the safe pre-buckling well. As the static pre-load increases, the probability of escape increases in a nonlinear manner. Permanent and transient escapes, as well as the influence of random noise, on the dynamic buckling load are investigated. To increase the load carrying capacity, a method for controlling the global nonlinear dynamics for the elastic von Mises truss is employed. The control method consists of the (optimal) elimination of homoclinic intersection by properly adding superharmonic terms to a given harmonic excitation. Permanent and transient basins of attraction are obtained. The results highlight the complex nonlinear dynamics of this class of structures and the effectiveness of the control method in increasing the integrity of the basins of attraction of the system and its practical safety

Bifurcation analysis of a parametrically excited inclined cable close to two-to-one internal resonance

This paper presents a study of how different vibration modes contribute to the dynamics of an inclined cable that is parametrically excited close to a 2 : 1 internal resonance. The behaviour of inclined cables is important for the design and analysis of cable-stay bridges. In this work the cable vibrations are modelled by a four-mode model. This type of model has been used previously to study the onset of cable sway motion caused by internal resonances which occur due to the nonlinear modal coupling terms. A bifurcation study is carried out with numerical continuation techniques applied to the scaled and averaged modal equations. As part of this analysis, the amplitudes of the cable vibration response to support inputs is computed. These theoretical results are compared with experimental measurements taken from a 5.4 m long inclined cable with a vertical support input at the lower end. In general this comparison shows a very high level of agreement

Characterization of Contractile Forces Generated by Stretch Marks Fibroblasts: In Vitro Study

    Get PDF
Abstract: Authors present a study about the contraction forces observed in striae distensae fibroblasts (SMF) in a collagen scaffold. Collagen lattices were used to study the mechanical behavior of SDF within the collagen matrix compared to the lattices produced using the healthy skin derived fibroblasts (NSF). A Forcebox device was used to measure the contractile forces. Striae Rubrae fibroblast’s contractile force was by 28% greater than that generated by the NSF and striae albae fibroblasts (P<0.05). Anomalies and especially differences in forces generated by SMF were observed through all our experiments. These findings complete and corroborate the results and information published in our previous studies. Infective endocarditis in patients after percutaneous pulmonary valve implantation with the stent-mounted bovine jugular vein valve : clinical experience and evaluation of the modified Duke criteria

Percutaneous pulmonary valve implantation (PPVI) has proven good hemodynamic results. As infective endocarditis (IE) remains a potential complication with limited available clinical data, we reviewed our patient records to improve future strategies of IE prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Medical records of all patients diagnosed with Melody® valve IE according to the modified Duke criteria were retrospectively analyzed in three Belgian tertiary centers. 23 IE episodes in 22 out of 240 patients were identified (incidence 2.4% / patient year) with a clear male predominance (86%). Median age at IE was 17.9 years (range 8.2-45.9 years) and median time from PPVI to IE was 2.4 years (range 0.7-8 years). Streptococcal species caused 10 infections (43%), followed by Staphylococcus aureus (n = 5, 22%). In 13/23 IE episodes a possible entry-point was identified (57%). IE was classified as definite in 15 (65%) and as possible in 8 (35%) cases due to limitations of imaging. Echocardiography visualized vegetations in only 10 patients. PET-CT showed positive FDG signals in 5/7 patients (71%) and intracardiac echocardiography a vegetation in 1/1 patient (100%). Eleven cases (48%) had a hemodynamically relevant pulmonary stenosis at IE presentation. Nine early and 6 late percutaneous or surgical re-interventions were performed. No IE related deaths occurred. IE after Melody® valve PPVI is associated with a relevant need of re-interventions. Communication to patients and physicians about risk factors is essential in prevention. The modified Duke criteria underperformed in diagnosing definite IE, but inclusion of new imaging modalities might improve diagnostic performance
