Mirror effect induced by the dilaton field on the Hawking radiation
We discuss the string creation in the near-extremal NS1 black string
solution. The string creation is described by an effective field equation
derived from a fundamental string action coupled to the dilaton field in a
conformally invariant manner. In the non-critical string model the dilaton
field causes a timelike mirror surface outside the horizon when the size of the
black string is comparable to the Planck scale. Since the fundamental strings
are reflected by the mirror surface, the negative energy flux does not
propagate across the surface. This means that the evaporation stops just before
the naked singularity of the extremal black string appears even though the
surface gravity is non-zero in the extremal limit.Comment: 15 page
Should mentoring be routinely introduced into general dental practice to reduce the risk of occupational stress?
Introduction: Occupational stress within general dental practice can potentially have an adverse impact on a practitioner's wellbeing and the quality of healthcare provided by that individual. Mentoring has routinely been utilised in other professions for stress management, however, there is little in the dental literature discussing the benefits of mentorship on the reduction of occupational stress for dental practitioners.
Aim: The aim of this study was to explore the perceptions of experienced foundation dental trainers within the Health Education, Kent, Surrey and Sussex postgraduate deanery as to the usefulness of routine mentoring as a tool to reduce occupational stress.
Methods: Using a qualitative approach, six individual semi-structured interviews were undertaken. Recorded interviews were transcribed and transcriptions were analysed using thematic coding to identify overarching themes.
Results: Both similarities and differences with the existing literature on routine mentoring within professional settings were identified. Foundation dental trainers were positive towards the concept of routine mentoring, although there was also a degree of scepticism regarding the potential uptake among colleagues. There was a perception that mentoring might more practically be used as a reactionary tool. Multiple potential barriers to routine mentoring were identified, included funding, scheduling and a lack of training.
Conclusions: The analysis identified that currently, experienced foundation dental practitioners do not consider routine mentoring as a practical option in the prevention of occupational stress. The results would suggest that further education is required as to the benefits of routine mentoring as a strategy for occupational stress management. However, with additional resources buying time, a hybrid model of mentoring and coaching has significant potential in general dental practice
Prevalence of Dyskinesia and OFF by 30-Minute Intervals Through the Day and Assessment of Daily Episodes of Dyskinesia and OFF: Novel Analyses of Diary Data from Gocovri Pivotal Trials.
BACKGROUND: Parkinson\u27s disease (PD) patients using levodopa commonly develop dyskinesia and OFF episodes that reduce quality of life.
OBJECTIVE: Evaluate prevalence of troublesome dyskinesia and OFF through the day, assessed by 30-minute intervals, as well as the mean number and duration of troublesome dyskinesia and OFF episodes, transitions between PD states, and effects of Gocovri® (amantadine) extended release capsules on these episodes.
METHODS: Evaluate diary data from pooled Gocovri phase 3, placebo-controlled trials-analyzed for 17 hours following wake-up-at baseline and week 12.
RESULTS: Diaries were evaluable for 162 patients. At baseline, 67% of patients woke up OFF, with prevalence decreasing to 13% at 2 hours and then remaining relatively steady at ∼12% (range, 6-17%) across half-hour intervals thereafter. Troublesome dyskinesia prevalence rose steadily from 5% to 24% over the first 2 hours, then fluctuated between 20% and 44% through the rest of the waking day. At baseline, patients experienced a mean of 3.0 daily episodes of troublesome dyskinesia (average duration 2.0 hours each), and 2.2 daily episodes of OFF (average duration 1.1 hour each). At week 12, Gocovri-treated patients showed greater reductions than placebo in troublesome dyskinesia and OFF episodes per day (treatment difference: -1.0 episodes and -0.4 episodes, respectively) and average episode duration (treatment difference: -0.6 hours and -0.3 hours, respectively). Mean duration of individual episodes of ON without troublesome dyskinesia (Good ON) increased by 5.0 hours for Gocovri, compared with 2.0 hours for placebo. Patients taking Gocovri experienced 2.2 fewer transitions between states than patients taking placebo.
CONCLUSIONS: Troublesome dyskinesia and OFF occurred in the morning and throughout the waking day. Gocovri-treated patients experienced fewer, shorter episodes of both troublesome dyskinesia and OFF, thereby increasing the duration of continuous Good ON episodes and reducing the frequency of transitions between motor states
Hubble Space Telescope WFPC-2 Imaging of Cassiopeia A
The young SNR Cassiopeia A was imaged with WFPC-2 through four filters
selected to capture the complete velocity range of the remnant's main shell in
several important emission lines. Primary lines detected were [O III]
4959,5007, [N II] 6583, [S II] 6716,6731 + [O II] 7319,7330 + [O I] 6300,6364,
and [S III] 9069,9532. About 3/4th of the remnant's main shell was imaged in
all four filters. Considerable detail is observed in the reverse-shocked ejecta
with typical knot scale lengths of 0.2"-0.4" (1 - 2 x 10^16 cm). Both bright
and faint emission features appear highly clumped. Large differences in [S III]
and [O III] line intensities indicating chemical abundance differences are also
seen, particularly in knots located along the bright northern limb and near the
base of the northeast jet. A line of curved overlapping filament in the
remnant's northwestern rim appears to mark the location of the remnant's
reverse shock front in this region. Finger-like ejecta structures elsewhere
suggest cases where the reverse shock front is encountering the remnant's
clumped ejecta. Narrow-band [N II] images of the remnant's circumstellar knots
("QSFs") reveal them to be 0.1"-0.6" thick knots and filaments, often with
diffuse edges facing away from the center of expansion. Three color composite
images of the whole remnant and certain sections along with individual filter
enlargements of selected regions of the bright optical shell are presented and

Neuropsychological constraints to human data production on a global scale
Which are the factors underlying human information production on a global
level? In order to gain an insight into this question we study a corpus of
252-633 Million publicly available data files on the Internet corresponding to
an overall storage volume of 284-675 Terabytes. Analyzing the file size
distribution for several distinct data types we find indications that the
neuropsychological capacity of the human brain to process and record
information may constitute the dominant limiting factor for the overall growth
of globally stored information, with real-world economic constraints having
only a negligible influence. This supposition draws support from the
observation that the files size distributions follow a power law for data
without a time component, like images, and a log-normal distribution for
multimedia files, for which time is a defining qualia.Comment: to be published in: European Physical Journal
Detecting deceptive reviews using argumentation
The unstoppable rise of social networks and the web is facing a serious challenge: identifying the truthfulness of online opinions and reviews. In this paper we use Argumentation Frameworks (AFs) extracted from reviews and explore whether the use of these AFs can improve the performance of machine learning techniques in detecting deceptive behaviour, resulting from users lying in order to mislead readers. The AFs represent how arguments from reviews relate to arguments from other reviews as well as to arguments about the goodness of the items being reviewed

Distinguishing post-treatment changes from recurrent disease in cholangiocarcinoma: a case report
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Three-dimensional techniques for radiotherapy have expanded possibilities for partial volume liver radiotherapy. Characteristic, transient radiographic changes can occur in the absence of clinical radiation-induced liver disease after hepatic radiotherapy and must be distinguished from local recurrence.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>In this report, we describe computed tomography changes after chemoradiotherapy for cholangiocarcinoma as an example of collaboration to determine the clinical significance of the radiographic finding.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Because of improved three-dimensional, conformal radiotherapy techniques, consultation across disciplines may be necessary to interpret post-treatment imaging findings.</p
First radial velocity results from the MINiature Exoplanet Radial Velocity Array (MINERVA)
The MINiature Exoplanet Radial Velocity Array (MINERVA) is a dedicated
observatory of four 0.7m robotic telescopes fiber-fed to a KiwiSpec
spectrograph. The MINERVA mission is to discover super-Earths in the habitable
zones of nearby stars. This can be accomplished with MINERVA's unique
combination of high precision and high cadence over long time periods. In this
work, we detail changes to the MINERVA facility that have occurred since our
previous paper. We then describe MINERVA's robotic control software, the
process by which we perform 1D spectral extraction, and our forward modeling
Doppler pipeline. In the process of improving our forward modeling procedure,
we found that our spectrograph's intrinsic instrumental profile is stable for
at least nine months. Because of that, we characterized our instrumental
profile with a time-independent, cubic spline function based on the profile in
the cross dispersion direction, with which we achieved a radial velocity
precision similar to using a conventional "sum-of-Gaussians" instrumental
profile: 1.8 m s over 1.5 months on the RV standard star HD 122064.
Therefore, we conclude that the instrumental profile need not be perfectly
accurate as long as it is stable. In addition, we observed 51 Peg and our
results are consistent with the literature, confirming our spectrograph and

A novel biosynthetic scaffold mesh reinforcement affords the lowest hernia recurrence in the highest-risk patients
Introduction
Patients with higher postoperative infection risk undergoing ventral hernia repair (VHR) have limited options for mesh use. Biosynthetic mesh is intended to utilize the durability of synthetic mesh combined with the biocompatibility of biologic mesh. We sought to assess the outcomes of a novel biosynthetic scaffold mesh for VHR in higher risk patients over a 12-month postoperative period.
Methods
Two cohorts of 50 consecutive patients who underwent VHR with TELA Bio OviTex biosynthetic or synthetic mesh were retrospectively compared. Endpoints included surgical site occurrence (SSO), readmission rate, and hernia recurrence following VHR at 12 months postoperatively.
Results
OviTex mesh placement was associated with higher risk Ventral Hernia Working Group (VHWG) distribution and more contaminated CDC wound class distribution compared to synthetic mesh placement (VHWG grade 3: 68% vs. 6%, p  I: 70% vs. 6%, p < 0.001). Additionally, concomitant procedures were performed more often with OviTex mesh placement than synthetic mesh placement (70% vs 10%, p < 0.001). The OviTex mesh performed comparably to synthetic mesh in terms of incidences of SSO (36% vs 22%, p = 0.19), readmission rates (24% vs 14%, p = 0.31), and hernia recurrence (6% vs 12%, p = 0.74). On further evaluation, patients who developed SSO with OviTex mesh (n = 18) had a 17% hernia recurrence whereas those with synthetic mesh (n = 11) had an associated 55% hernia recurrence (p = 0.048).
Conclusions
The OviTex biosynthetic mesh was used in higher risk patients and performed similarly to synthetic mesh in regards to rate of SSO, readmissions, and hernia recurrence. Furthermore, patients who developed SSO with Ovitex mesh were significantly less likely to have hernia recurrence than those with synthetic mesh. Overall, the data suggest that biosynthetic mesh is a more desirable option for definitive hernia repair in higher risk patients
