    Understanding the Neural Bases of Implicit and Statistical Learning

    © 2019 Cognitive Science Society, Inc. Both implicit learning and statistical learning focus on the ability of learners to pick up on patterns in the environment. It has been suggested that these two lines of research may be combined into a single construct of “implicit statistical learning.” However, by comparing the neural processes that give rise to implicit versus statistical learning, we may determine the extent to which these two learning paradigms do indeed describe the same core mechanisms. In this review, we describe current knowledge about neural mechanisms underlying both implicit learning and statistical learning, highlighting converging findings between these two literatures. A common thread across all paradigms is that learning is supported by interactions between the declarative and nondeclarative memory systems of the brain. We conclude by discussing several outstanding research questions and future directions for each of these two research fields. Moving forward, we suggest that the two literatures may interface by defining learning according to experimental paradigm, with “implicit learning” reserved as a specific term to denote learning without awareness, which may potentially occur across all paradigms. By continuing to align these two strands of research, we will be in a better position to characterize the neural bases of both implicit and statistical learning, ultimately improving our understanding of core mechanisms that underlie a wide variety of human cognitive abilities

    Acute influence of cigarette smoke in platelets, catecholamines and neurophysins in the normal conditions of daily life

    Cigarette smoking is firmly linked to the occurrence of acute coronary events. In twenty-two healthy volunteers in normal conditions of daily life we studied the acute influence of smoking on the following parameters: beta-thromboglobulin, thromboxane B2, epinephrine, norepinephrine, estrogen-stimulated neurophysin, and nicotine-stimulated-neurophysin. Our results show that in our population and following our protocol, smoking did not induce platelet activation, thromboxane formation, catecholamine release or estrogen-stimulated-neurophysin secretion. However, smoking did provoke a significant increase of nicotine-stimulated-neurophysin (p<0.05) which reflects vasopressin increase and which might explain the high incidence of ischaemic accidents in cigarette smoking via the vasoactive properties of vasopressi

    Effect of obesity and thoracic epidural analgesia on perioperative spirometry

    Background. Lung volumes in obese patients are reduced significantly in the postoperative period. As the effect of different analgesic regimes on perioperative spirometric tests in obese patients has not yet been studied, we investigated the effect of thoracic epidural analgesia and conventional opioid-based analgesia on perioperative lung volumes measured by spirometry. Methods. Eighty-four patients having midline laparotomy for gynaecological procedures successfully completed the study. Premedication, anaesthesia and analgesia were standardized. The patients were given a free choice between epidural analgesia (EDA) (n=42) or opioids (n=42) for postoperative analgesia. We performed spirometry to measure vital capacity (VC), forced vital capacity, peak expiratory flow, mid-expiratory flow and forced expiratory volume in 1 s at preoperative assessment, 30-60 min after premedication and 20 min, 1 h, 3 h and 6 h after extubation. Results. Baseline values were all within the normal range. All perioperative spirometric values decreased significantly with increasing body mass index (BMI). The greatest reduction in VC occurred directly after extubation, but was less in the EDA group than in the opioid group: mean of −23(sd 8)% versus −30(12)% (P30) the difference in VC was significantly more pronounced than in patients of normal weight (BMI<25): −45(10)% versus −33(4)% (P<0.001). Recovery of spirometric values was significantly quicker in patients receiving EDA, particularly in obese patients. Conclusion.     Using Regular Languages to Explore the Representational Capacity of Recurrent Neural Architectures

    The presence of Long Distance Dependencies (LDDs) in sequential data poses significant challenges for computational models. Various recurrent neural architectures have been designed to mitigate this issue. In order to test these state-of-the-art architectures, there is growing need for rich benchmarking datasets. However, one of the drawbacks of existing datasets is the lack of experimental control with regards to the presence and/or degree of LDDs. This lack of control limits the analysis of model performance in relation to the specific challenge posed by LDDs. One way to address this is to use synthetic data having the properties of subregular languages. The degree of LDDs within the generated data can be controlled through the k parameter, length of the generated strings, and by choosing appropriate forbidden strings. In this paper, we explore the capacity of different RNN extensions to model LDDs, by evaluating these models on a sequence of SPk synthesized datasets, where each subsequent dataset exhibits a longer degree of LDD. Even though SPk are simple languages, the presence of LDDs does have significant impact on the performance of recurrent neural architectures, thus making them prime candidate in benchmarking tasks.Comment: International Conference of Artificial Neural Networks (ICANN) 201

    Quantum Lattice Fluctuations and Luminescence in C_60

    We consider luminescence in photo-excited neutral C_60 using the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model applied to a single C_60 molecule. To calculate the luminescence we use a collective coordinate method where our collective coordinate resembles the displacement of the carbon atoms of the Hg(8) phonon mode and extrapolates between the ground state "dimerisation" and the exciton polaron. There is good agreement for the existing luminescence peak spacing and fair agreement for the relative intensity. We predict the existence of further peaks not yet resolved in experiment.     Effect of obesity and site of surgery on perioperative lung volumes

    Background. Although obese patients are thought to be susceptible to postoperative pulmonary complications, there are only limited data on the relationship between obesity and lung volumes after surgery. We studied how surgery and obesity affect lung volumes measured by spirometry. Methods. We prospectively studied 161 patients having either breast surgery (Group A, n=80) or lower abdominal laparotomy (Group B, n=81). Premedication and general anaesthesia were standardized. Spirometry was measured with the patient supine, in a 30° head‐up position. We measured vital capacity (VC), forced vital capacity, peak expiratory flow and forced expiratory volume in 1 s at preoperative assessment (baseline), after premedication (before induction of anaesthesia) and 10-20 min, 1 h and 3 h after extubation. Results. Baseline spirometric values were all within the normal range. All perioperative values decreased significantly with increasing body mass index (BMI). The greatest reduction of mean VC (expressed as percentage of baseline values) occurred after extubation, and was more marked after laparotomy than after breast surgery (23 (sd 14)% vs 20 (14)%). Considering patients according to BMI (30), VC decreased after surgery by 12 (7)%, 24 (8)% and 40 (10)%, respectively. VC recovered more rapidly in Group A. Conclusion. Postoperative reduction in spirometric volumes was related to BMI. Obesity had more effect on VC than the site of surgery. Br J Anaesth 2004; 92: 202-

    ESG disclosure and idiosyncratic risk in initial public offerings

    Although legitimacy theory provides strong arguments that environmental, social and governance (ESG) disclosure and performance can help mitigate firm-specific (idiosyncratic) risks, this relationship has been repeatedly challenged by conceptual arguments, such as ‘transparency fallacy’ or ‘impression management’, and mixed empirical evidence. Therefore, we investigate this relationship in the revelatory case of initial public offerings (IPOs), which represent the first sale of common stock to the wider public. IPOs are characterised by strong information asymmetry between firm insiders and society, while at the same time suffering from uncertainty in firm legitimacy, culminating in amplified financial risks for both issuers and investors in aftermarket trading. Using data from the United States, we demonstrate that (1) voluntary ESG disclosure reduces idiosyncratic volatility and downside tail risk and (2) higher ESG ratings have lower associated firm-specific volatility and downside tail risk during the first year of trading in the aftermarket. We provide theoretical arguments for the relationships observed, suggesting that companies striving for ESG performance and communicating their efforts signal their compliance with sustainability-related norms, thus acquiring and upholding a societal license to operate. ESG performance and disclosure help companies build their reputation capital with investors after going public. We also report that ESG disclosure is a more consistent proxy for ex-ante uncertainty as an indicator of aftermarket risk, thereby replacing some of the more conventional measures, such as firm age, offered in the existing literature

    Evaluating causes of error in landmark-based data collection using scanners

    In this study, we assess the precision, accuracy, and repeatability of craniodental landmarks (Types I, II, and III, plus curves of semilandmarks) on a single macaque cranium digitally reconstructed with three different surface scanners and a microCT scanner. Nine researchers with varying degrees of osteological and geometric morphometric knowledge landmarked ten iterations of each scan (40 total) to test the effects of scan quality, researcher experience, and landmark type on levels of intra- and interobserver error. Two researchers additionally landmarked ten specimens from seven different macaque species using the same landmark protocol to test the effects of the previously listed variables relative to species-level morphological differences (i.e., observer variance versus real biological variance). Error rates within and among researchers by scan type were calculated to determine whether or not data collected by different individuals or on different digitally rendered crania are consistent enough to be used in a single dataset. Results indicate that scan type does not impact rate of intra- or interobserver error. Interobserver error is far greater than intraobserver error among all individuals, and is similar in variance to that found among different macaque species. Additionally, experience with osteology and morphometrics both positively contribute to precision in multiple landmarking sessions, even where less experienced researchers have been trained in point acquisition. Individual training increases precision (although not necessarily accuracy), and is highly recommended in any situation where multiple researchers will be collecting data for a single project
