BKM Lie superalgebra for the Z_5 orbifolded CHL string
We study the Z_5-orbifolding of the CHL string theory by explicitly
constructing the modular form tilde{Phi}_2 generating the degeneracies of the
1/4-BPS states in the theory. Since the additive seed for the sum form is a
weak Jacobi form in this case, a mismatch is found between the modular forms
generated from the additive lift and the product form derived from threshold
corrections. We also construct the BKM Lie superalgebra, tilde{G}_5,
corresponding to the modular form tilde{Delta}_1 (Z) = tilde{Phi}_2 (Z)^{1/2}
which happens to be a hyperbolic algebra. This is the first occurrence of a
hyperbolic BKM Lie superalgebra. We also study the walls of marginal stability
of this theory in detail, and extend the arithmetic structure found by Cheng
and Dabholkar for the N=1,2,3 orbifoldings to the N=4,5 and 6 models, all of
which have an infinite number of walls in the fundamental domain. We find that
analogous to the Stern-Brocot tree, which generated the intercepts of the walls
on the real line, the intercepts for the N >3 cases are generated by linear
recurrence relations. Using the correspondence between the walls of marginal
stability and the walls of the Weyl chamber of the corresponding BKM Lie
superalgebra, we propose the Cartan matrices for the BKM Lie superalgebras
corresponding to the N=5 and 6 models.Comment: 30 pages, 2 figure
Space-efficient Feature Maps for String Alignment Kernels
String kernels are attractive data analysis tools for analyzing string data.
Among them, alignment kernels are known for their high prediction accuracies in
string classifications when tested in combination with SVM in various
applications. However, alignment kernels have a crucial drawback in that they
scale poorly due to their quadratic computation complexity in the number of
input strings, which limits large-scale applications in practice. We address
this need by presenting the first approximation for string alignment kernels,
which we call space-efficient feature maps for edit distance with moves
(SFMEDM), by leveraging a metric embedding named edit sensitive parsing (ESP)
and feature maps (FMs) of random Fourier features (RFFs) for large-scale string
analyses. The original FMs for RFFs consume a huge amount of memory
proportional to the dimension d of input vectors and the dimension D of output
vectors, which prohibits its large-scale applications. We present novel
space-efficient feature maps (SFMs) of RFFs for a space reduction from O(dD) of
the original FMs to O(d) of SFMs with a theoretical guarantee with respect to
concentration bounds. We experimentally test SFMEDM on its ability to learn SVM
for large-scale string classifications with various massive string data, and we
demonstrate the superior performance of SFMEDM with respect to prediction
accuracy, scalability and computation efficiency.Comment: Full version for ICDM'19 pape
Short communication Sulphate measurement in organic-rich solutions: Carbonate fusion pretreatment to remove organic interferences
Sulphate measurement using a barium sulphate turbidimetric method in solutions with high concentrations of organic material is shown to be problematic. The organics give background colour, which introduces a positive error to the measured absorption,
and inhibit the barium sulphate precipitate, which results in a negative error. A carbonate fusion pretreatment of the sample results in the removal of the organic matter and associated interferences. With this pretreatment, excellent sulphate recoveries
were obtained (100%). Rigorous testing of the method shows that reproducible and accurate results are obtainable. Water SA Vol. 31 (2) 2005: pp.267-27
Chemical characteristics of Pacific tropospheric air in the region of the Intertropical Convergence Zone and South Pacific Convergence Zone
The Pacific Exploratory Mission (PEM)-Tropics provided extensive aircraft data to study the atmospheric chemistry of tropospheric air in Pacific Ocean regions, extending from Hawaii to New Zealand and from Fiji to east of Easter Island. This region, especially the tropics, includes some of the cleanest tropospheric air of the world and, as such, is important for studying atmospheric chemical budgets and cycles. The region also provides a sensitive indicator of the global-scale impact of human activity on the chemistry of the troposphere, and includes such important features as the Pacific "warm pool," the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), the South Pacific Convergence Zone (SPCZ), and Walker Cell circulations. PEM-Tropics was conducted from August to October 1996. The ITCZ and SPCZ are major upwelling regions within the South Pacific and, as such, create boundaries to exchange of tropospheric air between regions to the north and south. Chemical data obtained in the near vicinity of the ITCZ and the SPCZ are examined. Data measured within the convergent zones themselves are not considered. The analyses show that air north and south of the convergent zones have different chemical signatures, and the signatures are reflective of the source regions and transport histories of the air. Air north of the ITCZ shows a modest urban/industrialized signature compared to air south of the ITCZ. The chemical signature of air south of the SPCZ is dominated by combustion emissions from biomass burning, while air north of the SPCZ is relatively clean and of similar composition to ITCZ south air. Chemical signature differences of air north and south of the zones are most pronounced at altitudes below 5 km, and, as such, show that the ITCZ and SPCZ are effective low-altitude barriers to the transport of tropospheric air. At altitudes of 8 to 10 km, chemical signatures are less dissimilar, and air backward trajectories (to 10 days) show cross-convergent-zone flow. At altitudes below about 5 km, little cross-zonal flow is observed. Chemical signatures presented include over 30 trace chemical species including ultrafine, fine, and heated-fine (250°C) aerosol. GeoBIM for built environment condition assessment supporting asset management decision making
The digital transformation in management of the built environment is more and more evident. While the benefits of location data, from Building Information Modelling or Geographical Information Systems, have been explored separately, their combination - GeoBIM - in asset management has never been explored. Data collection for condition assessment is challenging due to quantity, types, frequency and quality of data. We first describe the opportunities and challenges of GeoBIM for condition assessment. The theoretical approach is then validated developing an integrated GeoBIM model of the digital built environment, for a neighbourhood in Milan, Italy. Data are collected, linked, processed and analysed, through multiple software platforms, providing relevant information for asset management decision making. Good results are achieved in rapid massive data collection, improved visualisation, and analysis. While further testing and development is required, the case study outcomes demonstrated the innovation and the mid-term service-oriented potential of the proposed approach
Different patterns of HIV-1 DNA after therapy discontinuation
BACKGROUND: By persisting in infected cells for a long period of time, proviral HIV-1 DNA can represent an alternative viral marker to RNA viral load during the follow-up of HIV-1 infected individuals. In the present study sequential blood samples of 10 patients under antiretroviral treatment from 1997 with two NRTIs, who refused to continue any antiviral regimen, were analyzed for 16 - 24 weeks to study the possible relationship between DNA and RNA viral load. METHODS: The amount of proviral DNA was quantified by SYBR green real-time PCR in peripheral blood mononuclear cells from a selected group of ten patients with different levels of plasmatic viremia (RNA viral load). RESULTS: Variable levels of proviral DNA were found without any significant correlation between proviral load and plasma HIV-1 RNA levels. Results obtained showed an increase or a rebound in viral DNA in most patients, suggesting that the absence of therapy reflects an increase and/or a persistence of cells containing viral DNA. CONCLUSION: Even though plasma HIV RNA levels remain the basic parameter to monitor the intensity of viral replication, the results obtained seem to indicate that DNA levels could represent an adjunct prognostic marker in monitoring HIV-1 infected subjects. BIM AND GIS INTEGRATION FOR INFRASTRUCTURE ASSET MANAGEMENT: A BIBLIOMETRIC ANALYSIS
The integration of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) is gaining momentum in digital built Asset Management (AM), and has the potential to improve information management operations and provide advantages in process control and delivery of quality AM services, along with underlying data management benefits through entire life cycle of an asset. Work has been carried out relating GeoBIM/AM to buildings as well as infrastructure assets, where the potential financial savings are extensive. While information form BIM maybe be sufficient for building-AM; for infrastructure AM a combination of GIS and BIM is required. Scientific literature relating to this topic has been growing in recent years and has now reached a point where a systematic analysis of current and potential uses of GeoBIM in AM for Infrastructure is possible. Three specific areas form part of the analysis – a review of BIM and Infrastructure AM and GIS and Infrastructure AM leads to a better understanding of current practice. Combining the two, a review of GeoBIM and Infrastructure AM allows the benefits of, and issues relating to, GeoBIM to be clearly identified, both at technical and operational levels. A set of 54 journal articles was selected for in-depth contents analysis according to the AM function addressed and the managed asset class. The analysis enabled the identification of three categories of issues and opportunities: data management, interoperability and integration and AM process and service management. The identified knowledge gaps, in turn, underpin problem definition for the next phases of research into GeoBIM for infrastructure AM
MRI Acquisition and Analysis Protocol for In Vivo Intraorbital Optic Nerve Segmentation at 3T
Purpose.: To present a new acquisition and analysis protocol for reliable and reproducible segmentation of the entire intraorbital optic nerve (ION) mean cross-sectional area by means of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at 3 tesla (T). /
Methods.: Eight healthy volunteers (mean age 31, five were male) gave written informed consent and both of their IONs were imaged individually using a coronal-oblique T2-weighted fast multidynamic image acquisition scheme; the proposed acquisition scheme has its rationale in combining separately acquired volumes and registering them to account for motion-related artifacts commonly associated with longer acquisitions. Mean cross-sectional area of each ION was measured using a semiautomated image analysis protocol that was based on an active surface model previously described and used for spinal cord imaging. Reproducibility was assessed for repeated scans (scan-rescan) and repeated image analysis performance (intraobserver). /
Results.: Mean and SD values of the left ION cross-sectional area for the eight healthy volunteers were 5.0 (±0.7) mm2 and for the right ION were 5.3 (±0.8) mm2. Mean scan-rescan coefficient of variation (COV) for the left ION was 4.3% and for the right was 4.4%. Mean intraobserver COV for the left ION was 2.1% and for the right was 1.8%. /
Conclusions.: This study presents a new MRI acquisition and analysis protocol for reliable and reproducible in vivo measurement of the entire ION mean cross-sectional area as demonstrated in a pilot study of healthy subjects. The protocol presented here can be used in future studies of the ION in disease state
Integrated chemical/physical and biological processes modeling Part 2 - Anaerobic digestion of sewage sludges
The development and validation of a two phase (aqueous-gas) integrated mixed weak acid/base chemical, physical and biological processes kinetic model for anaerobic digestion (AD) of sewage sludge are described. The biological kinetic processes for AD are integrated into a two phase subset of the three phase mixed weak acid/base chemistry kinetic model of Musvoto et al. (1997, 2000a,b,c). The approach of characterising sewage sludge into carbohydrates, lipids and proteins, as is done in the International Water Association (IWA) AD model No 1 (ADM1, Batstone et al., 2002), requires measurements that are not routinely available on sewage sludges. Instead, the sewage sludge is characterised with the COD, carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen (CHON) composition. The model is formulated in mole units, based on conservation of C, N, O, H and COD. The model is calibrated and validated with data from laboratory mesophilic anaerobic digesters operating from 7 to 20 d sludge age and fed a sewage primary and humus sludge mixture. These digesters yielded COD mass balances between 107 and 109% and N mass balances between 91 and 99%, and hence the experimental data is accepted as reasonable. The sewage sludge is found to be 64 to 68% biodegradable (depending on the kinetic formulation selected for the hydrolysis process) and to have a C,sub>3.5H7O2N0.196 composition. For the selected hydrolysis kinetics of surface mediated reaction (Contois), with a single set of kinetic and stoichiometric constants, for all retention times free and saline ammonia (FSA), short chain fatty acids (SCFA), H2CO3* alkalinity and pH of the effluent stream, and CO2 and CH4 gases in the gas stream. The measured composition of primary sludge from two local wastewater treatment plants ranged between C3.38H7O1.91N0.21 and C3.91H7O2.04N0.16. The predicted composition is therefore within 5% of the average measured composition providing persuasive validation of the model. The Berkeley Contact Lens Extended Wear Study. Part I : Study design and conduct.
ObjectiveThe primary aim of the Berkeley Contact Lens Extended Wear Study (CLEWS) was to test the hypotheses that extended wear of rigid gas-permeable (RGP) contact lenses with greater oxygen permeability (Dk) reduces the incidence of contact lens-associated keratopathy (CLAK) and increases the survival rate in RGP extended wear (EW). In this article we describe the clinical trial design in detail, present the results of subject recruitment and retention, and provide the baseline demographic and ocular characteristics of the CLEWS subjects, whose data will be analyzed to address the study aims in a companion article.DesignA randomized, concurrently controlled clinical trial.InterventionSubjects were fitted with day wear (DW) high-Dk RGP lenses and then adapted to EW. Subjects who adapted to EW were then randomly assigned to either high- or medium-Dk RGP lenses for 12 months of 6-nights/week EW.Main outcome measuresSlit-lamp assessment and grading of 17 possible keratopathies, measurement of refractive error and corneal curvature, and symptoms. Follow-up data were collected every 3 months.ResultsFrom 545 subjects entering the DW adaptation phase, 201 adapted to EW and were randomly assigned to medium- or high-Dk lenses for 12 months of EW. The baseline characteristics of the two study groups were similar and did not differ from the 344 DW subjects who failed to adapt to EW. The distributions of oxygen transmissibility for the two study groups were disjoint, indicating that each group received distinctly different levels of hypoxia.ConclusionsWe show that CLEWS was appropriately designed to address the study hypotheses, was conducted with regard for the safety of the subjects, and adhered to rigorous protocols designed to control for bias and ensure the integrity of study data. We establish the internal validity of between-group statistical comparisons and characterize our study population to permit informed evaluation of the applicability of our results to the contact lens-wearing population in general
