    Functional-morphological parallels of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal system response reaction to long-term hypokinesia

    The effect of 2 and 4 week hypokinesia regimens on the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal system (HPAS) was investigated in 110 inbred mice. Progressive exhaustion and pathological reorganization of the HPAS morphofunctional structures was revealed. On the basis of established facts of interlineary and interspecies differences in the HPAS response, it is suggested that the animal body response reaction to the long term effects of hypokinesia depends largely on its HPAS resistance and the values of this system's defensive adaptation potential

    On the origin of 140 GHz emission from the 4 July 2012 solar flare

    The sub-THz event observed on the 4 July 2012 with the Bauman Moscow State Technical University Radio Telescope RT-7.5 at 93 and 140~GHz as well as Kislovodsk and Mets\"ahovi radio telescopes, Radio Solar Telescope Network (RSTN), GOES, RHESSI, and SDO orbital stations is analyzed. The spectral flux between 93 and 140 GHz has been observed increasing with frequency. On the basis of the SDO/AIA data the differential emission measure has been calculated. It is shown that the thermal coronal plasma with the temperature above 0.5~MK cannot be responsible for the observed sub-THz flare emission. The non-thermal gyrosynchrotron mechanism can be responsible for the microwave emission near 1010~GHz but the observed millimeter spectral characteristics are likely to be produced by the thermal bremsstrahlung emission from plasma with a temperature of about 0.1~MK.Comment: 18 pages, 6 figure

    Capital mobility and the output-inflation tradeoff

    Identifying determinants of the output-inflation tradeoff has been a key issue in business cycle research. We provide evidence that in countries with greater restrictions on capital mobility, a given reduction in the inflation rate is associated with a smaller loss in output. This result is shown to be consistent with the predictions of a version of the Mundell-Fleming model. Restrictions on capital mobility are measured using the IMF's Annual Report on Exchange Rate Arrangements and Exchange Restrictions. Estimates of the output-inflation tradeoff are taken from previous studies (viz., Lucas [Am. Econ. Rev. 63 (1973)] and Ball, Mankies and Romer 19 (1988)). © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V.     "Better Safe than Sorry" - Individual Risk-free Pension Schemes in the European Union - Macroeconomic Benefits, the Mobile Working Citizen's Perspective and Why Nots

    Variations between the diverse pension systems in the member states of the European Union hamper labour market mobility, across country borders but also within the countries of the European Union. From a macroeconomic perspective, and in the light of demographic pressure, this paper argues that allowing individual instead of collective pension building would greatly improve labour market flexibility and thus enhance the functioning of the monetary union. I argue that working citizens would benefit, for three reasons, from pension saving in a risk-free savings account. First, citizens would have a clear picture of the accumulation of their own pension savings throughout their working life. Second, they would pay hardly any extra costs and, third, once retired they would not be subject to the whims of government or other pension fund managers. This paper investigates the feasibility of individual pension building under various parameter settings by calculating the pension saved during a working life and the pension dis-saved after retirement. The findings show that there are no reasons why the European Union and individual member states should not allow individual risk-free pension savings accounts. This would have macroeconomic benefits and provide a solid pension provision that can enhance mobility, instead of engaging workers in different mandatory collective pension schemes that exist around in the European Union

    Radio Emission and Particle Acceleration in SN 1993J

    The radio light curves of SN 1993J are found to be well fit by a synchrotron spectrum, suppressed by external free-free absorption and synchrotron self-absorption. A standard r^-2 circumstellar medium is assumed, and found to be adequate. The magnetic field and number density of relativistic electrons behind the shock are determined. The strength of the magnetic field argues strongly for turbulent amplification behind the shock. The ratio of the magnetic and thermal energy density behind the shock is ~0.14. Synchrotron and Coulomb cooling dominate the losses of the electrons. The injected electron spectrum has a power law index -2.1, consistent with diffusive shock acceleration, and the number density scales with the thermal electron energy density. The total energy density of the relativistic electrons is, if extrapolated to gamma ~ 1, ~ 5x10^-4 of the thermal energy density. The free-free absorption required is consistent with previous calculations of the circumstellar temperature of SN 1993J, T_e ~ (2-10)x10^5 K. The relative importance of free-free absorption, Razin suppression, and the synchrotron self-absorption effect for other supernovae are briefly discussed. Guidelines for the modeling and interpretation of VLBI observations are given.Comment: accepted for Ap.

    A review of experimental investigations on ion production in plasma developed on SMIS 37 source at the Institute of Applied Physics of RAS (Nizhny Novgorod) is reported. Pulsed power gyrotron with emission frequency 37.5 GHz was used for plasma creation and heating in the simple magnetic mirror trap. Magnetic field with value up to 3.5 T was created by pulsed coils. Experiments were carried out in nitrogen as operating gas. Formation of multicharged ions in dense plasma in different regimes of plasma confinement was investigated. In this report we describe some investigations of instabilities of the plasma in the trap. Low frequency instabilities are analyzed basing on the results of plasma high-speed image registration. Also, whistler cyclotron instability was observed. Short pulses of accelerated electrons with energy about 10 keV are measured. Detected short pulses of microwave emission of the plasma characterize cyclotron instability too. Dense plasma of singly charged ions obtained in the trap with the plug magnetic field much less than resonant value. Flux of the plasma exceeds 0,1 A/cm2, electron temperature is about 20 eV. Such plasma seems to be interesting for surface modification

    Post-rift uplift of the Dhofar margin (Gulf of Aden)

    International audienceAn investigation of the sedimentation pattern along the Dhofar margin allows us to describe its late-stage evolution. After the accumulation of a thick post-rift sedimentary succession, two debris flow events occurred at the foot of the slope. The first event, affecting a wide area of the margin, marks a major change in sedimentation. The second event is associated with a shift of sedimentary deposition from the slope toward the basin. This latter debris flow was caused by an uplift phase, and highlights two distinct deformational styles in the eastern and western part of the Dhofar margin. Both events occurred very late in the history of the margin, at least 7.6 Ma after the end of the rifting phase (35-17.6 Ma)

    Late-stage tectonic evolution of the Al-Hajar Mountains, Oman: New constraints from Palaeogene sedimentary units and low-temperature thermochronometry

    Mountain building in the Al-Hajar Mountains (NE Oman) occurred during two major shortening stages, related to the convergence between Africa-Arabia and Eurasia, separated by nearly 30 Ma of tectonic quiescence. Most of the shortening was accommodated during the Late Cretaceous, when northward subduction of the Neo-Tethys Ocean was followed by the ophiolites obduction on top of the former Mesozoic margin. This shortening event lasted until the latest Santonian - early Campanian. Maastrichtian to Eocene carbonates unconformably overlie the eroded nappes and seal the Cretaceous foredeep. These neo-autochthonous post-nappe sedimentary rocks were deformed, along with the underlying Cretaceous tectonic pile, during the second shortening event, itself including two main exhumation stages. In this study we combine remotely sensed structural data, seismic interpretation, field-based structural investigations and apatite (U-Th)/He (AHe) cooling ages to obtain new insights into the Cenozoic deformation stage. Seismic interpretation indicates the occurrence of a late Eocene flexural basin, later deformed by an Oligocene thrusting event, during which the post-nappe succession and the underlying Cretaceous nappes of the internal foredeep were uplifted. This stage was followed by folding of the post-nappe succession during the Miocene. AHe data from detrital siliciclastic deposits in the frontal area of the mountain chain provide cooling ages spanning from 17.3 to 42 Ma, consistent with available data for the structural culminations of Oman. Our work points out how renewal of flexural subsidence in the foredeep and uplift of the mountain belt were coeval processes, followed by layer-parallel shortening preceding final fold amplification

    Semi-Hard Scattering Unraveled from Collective Dynamics by Two-Pion Azimuthal Correlations in 158 A GeV/c Pb + Au Collisions

    Elliptic flow and two-particle azimuthal correlations of charged hadrons and high-pTp_T pions (pT>p_T> 1 GeV/cc) have been measured close to mid-rapidity in 158A GeV/cc Pb+Au collisions by the CERES experiment. Elliptic flow (v2v_2) rises linearly with pTp_T to a value of about 10% at 2 GeV/cc. Beyond pTp_T\approx 1.5 GeV/cc, the slope decreases considerably, possibly indicating a saturation of v2v_2 at high pTp_T. Two-pion azimuthal anisotropies for pT>p_T> 1.2 GeV/cc exceed the elliptic flow values by about 60% in mid-central collisions. These non-flow contributions are attributed to near-side and back-to-back jet-like correlations, the latter exhibiting centrality dependent broadening.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev.     Low-mass e+e- pair production in 158 A GeV Pb-Au collisions at the CERN SPS, its dependence on multiplicity and transverse momentum

    We report a measurement of low-mass electron pairs observed in 158 GeV/nucleon Pb-Au collisions. The pair yield integrated over the range of invariant masses 0.2 < m < 2.0 GeV is enhanced by a factor of 3.5 +/- 0.4 (stat) +/- 0.9 (syst) over the expectation from neutral meson decays. As observed previously in S-Au collisions, the enhancement is most pronounced in the invariant-mass region 300-700 MeV. For Pb-Au we find evidence for a strong increase of the enhancement with centrality. In addition, we show that the enhancement covers a wide range in transverse momentum, but is largest at the lowest observed pt.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys.Lett.
