Decolonising museum cultures: an artist and a geographer in collaboration
There is much published research and strategic rhetoric on decolonising the discipline, the academy, and institutions of social and cultural importance. However, very little literature examines the stepping stones in the process of materially challenging, changing, and decolonising institutions themselves. This paper emerges as an outline of axes or episodes of dialogue in a collaborative journey between the artist Rosanna Raymond and myself, since 2005. We outline the issues encountered: some of these are intrinsically the legacies of imperial museology and the paradigms through which we evaluate and exhibit the cultures of racialised “others.” The episodes act as a means of understanding the politics and ways of decolonising that are possible. The collaboration enables the potential for interdisciplinary “ways of seeing” that counter colonial frameworks. The paper unravels the effect of imperial accounts of “other” cultures at museums, explored here through “Maori” and “Polynesian” curatorial practices and representations at the museum

Electronic branching ratio of the τ lepton
This is the publisher's version, also available electronically from http://journals.aps.org/prd/abstract/10.1103/PhysRevD.45.3976.Using data accumulated by the CLEO I detector operating at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have measured the ratio R=Γ(τ→eν¯(e)ν(τ)) / Γ(1) where Γ(1) is the τ decay rate to final states with one charged particle. We find R=0.2231±0.0044±0.0073 where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. Together with the measured topological one-charged-particle branching fraction, this yields the branching fraction of the τ lepton to electrons, Be=0.192±0.004±0.006
Analysis of hadronic transitions in Υ(3S) decays
This is the publisher's version, also available electronically from http://journals.aps.org/prd/abstract/10.1103/PhysRevD.49.40.Using the CLEO II detector, we have measured the branching fractions for Υ(3S)→ππΥ(1S), Υ(3S)→ππΥ(2S), and the cascade Υ(3S)→Υ(2S)+X, Υ(2S)→π+π−Υ(1S), analyzing the exclusive mode where the daughter Υ state decays to a e(+)e(−) or μ(+)μ(−) pair, as well as the inclusive π(+)π(−) transitions where the final Υ state decays into hadrons. Properties of the ππ system are analyzed. Searches for the cascade decay Υ(3S)→π+π−h(b), h(b)→γη(b) and Υ(3S)→π0h(b) were also performed
Anode Biofilm Transcriptomics Reveals Outer Surface Components Essential for High Density Current Production in Geobacter sulfurreducens Fuel Cells
The mechanisms by which Geobacter sulfurreducens transfers electrons through relatively thick (>50 µm) biofilms to electrodes acting as a sole electron acceptor were investigated. Biofilms of Geobacter sulfurreducens were grown either in flow-through systems with graphite anodes as the electron acceptor or on the same graphite surface, but with fumarate as the sole electron acceptor. Fumarate-grown biofilms were not immediately capable of significant current production, suggesting substantial physiological differences from current-producing biofilms. Microarray analysis revealed 13 genes in current-harvesting biofilms that had significantly higher transcript levels. The greatest increases were for pilA, the gene immediately downstream of pilA, and the genes for two outer c-type membrane cytochromes, OmcB and OmcZ. Down-regulated genes included the genes for the outer-membrane c-type cytochromes, OmcS and OmcT. Results of quantitative RT-PCR of gene transcript levels during biofilm growth were consistent with microarray results. OmcZ and the outer-surface c-type cytochrome, OmcE, were more abundant and OmcS was less abundant in current-harvesting cells. Strains in which pilA, the gene immediately downstream from pilA, omcB, omcS, omcE, or omcZ was deleted demonstrated that only deletion of pilA or omcZ severely inhibited current production and biofilm formation in current-harvesting mode. In contrast, these gene deletions had no impact on biofilm formation on graphite surfaces when fumarate served as the electron acceptor. These results suggest that biofilms grown harvesting current are specifically poised for electron transfer to electrodes and that, in addition to pili, OmcZ is a key component in electron transfer through differentiated G. sulfurreducens biofilms to electrodes
Peripheral Determinants of Oxygen Utilization in Heart Failure With Preserved Ejection Fraction
The aim of this study was to determine the arteriovenous oxygen content difference (ΔAVO2) in adult subjects with and without heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) during systemic and forearm exercise. Subjects with HFpEF had reduced ΔAVO2. Forearm diffusional conductance for oxygen, a lumped conductance parameter that incorporates all impediments to the movement of oxygen from red blood cells in skeletal muscle capillaries into the mitochondria within myocytes, was estimated. Forearm diffusional conductance for oxygen was not different among adults with HFpEF, those with hypertension, and healthy control subjects; therefore, diffusional conductance cannot explain the reduced forearm ΔAVO2. Instead, adiposity was strongly associated with ΔAVO2, suggesting an active role for adipose tissue in reducing exercise capacity in patients with HFpEF

Hypervelocity impact flash for missile-defense kill assessment and engagement analysis : experiments on Z.
Kill assessment continues to be a major problem for the nation's missile defense program. A potential approach for addressing this issue involves spectral and temporal analysis of the short-time impact flash that occurs when a kill vehicle intercepts and engages a target missile. This can provide identification of the materials involved in the impact event, which will, in turn, yield the data necessary for target identification, engagement analysis, and kill assessment. This report describes the first phases of a project under which we are providing laboratory demonstrations of the feasibility and effectiveness of this approach. We are using two major Sandia facilities, the Z-Pinch accelerator, and the two- and three-stage gas guns at the Shock Thermodynamics and Applied Research (STAR) facility. We have looked at the spectral content of impact flash at velocities up to 25 km/s on the Z-Pinch machine to establish the capability for spectroscopy for these types of events, and are looking at similar experiments at velocities from 6 to 11 km/s on the gas guns to demonstrate a similar capability for a variety of research-oriented and applied materials. Causal categories: relativistically interacting processes
A symmetric monoidal category naturally arises as the mathematical structure
that organizes physical systems, processes, and composition thereof, both
sequentially and in parallel. This structure admits a purely graphical
calculus. This paper is concerned with the encoding of a fixed causal structure
within a symmetric monoidal category: causal dependencies will correspond to
topological connectedness in the graphical language. We show that correlations,
either classical or quantum, force terminality of the tensor unit. We also show
that well-definedness of the concept of a global state forces the monoidal
product to be only partially defined, which in turn results in a relativistic
covariance theorem. Except for these assumptions, at no stage do we assume
anything more than purely compositional symmetric-monoidal categorical
structure. We cast these two structural results in terms of a mathematical
entity, which we call a `causal category'. We provide methods of constructing
causal categories, and we study the consequences of these methods for the
general framework of categorical quantum mechanics.Comment: 43 pages, lots of figure
No measure for culture? Value in the new economy
This paper explores articulations of the value of investment in culture and the arts through a critical discourse analysis of policy documents, reports and academic commentary since 1997. It argues that in this period, discourses around the value of culture have moved from a focus on the direct economic contributions of the culture industries to their indirect economic benefits. These indirect benefits are discussed here under three main headings: creativity and innovation, employability, and social inclusion. These are in turn analysed in terms of three forms of capital: human, social and cultural. The paper concludes with an analysis of this discursive shift through the lens of autonomist Marxist concerns with the labour of social reproduction. It is our argument that, in contemporary policy discourses on culture and the arts, the government in the UK is increasingly concerned with the use of culture to form the social in the image of capital. As such, we must turn our attention beyond the walls of the factory in order to understand the contemporary capitalist production of value and resistance to it. </jats:p
EVLA Observations Constrain the Environment and Progenitor System of Type Ia Supernova 2011fe
We report unique EVLA observations of SN 2011fe representing the most
sensitive radio study of a Type Ia supernova to date. Our data place direct
constraints on the density of the surrounding medium at radii ~10^15-10^16 cm,
implying an upper limit on the mass loss rate from the progenitor system of
Mdot <~ 6 x 10^-10 Msol/yr (assuming a wind speed of 100 km/s), or expansion
into a uniform medium with density n_CSM <~ 6 cm^-3. Drawing from the observed
properties of non-conservative mass transfer among accreting white dwarfs, we
use these limits on the density of the immediate environs to exclude a phase
space of possible progenitors systems for SN 2011fe. We rule out a symbiotic
progenitor system and also a system characterized by high accretion rate onto
the white dwarf that is expected to give rise to optically-thick accretion
winds. Assuming that a small fraction, 1%, of the mass accreted is lost from
the progenitor system, we also eliminate much of the potential progenitor
parameter space for white dwarfs hosting recurrent novae or undergoing stable
nuclear burning. Therefore, we rule out the most popular single degenerate
progenitor models for SN 2011fe, leaving a limited phase space inhabited by
some double degenerate systems and exotic progenitor scenarios.Comment: Accepted to Ap
