    A Deep Spitzer Survey of Circumstellar Disks in the Young Double Cluster, h and chi Persei

    We analyze very deep IRAC and MIPS photometry of ∌\sim 12,500 members of the 14 Myr old Double Cluster, h and χ\chi Persei, building upon on our earlier, shallower Spitzer studies (Currie et al. 2007a, 2008a). Numerous likely members show infrared (IR) excesses at 8 {\mu}m and 24 ÎŒ\mum indicative of circumstellar dust. The frequency of stars with 8 ÎŒ\mum excess is at least 2% for our entire sample, slightly lower (higher) for B/A stars (later type, lower-mass stars). Optical spectroscopy also identifies gas in about 2% of systems but with no clear trend between the presence of dust and gas. Spectral energy distribution (SED) modeling of 18 sources with detections at optical wavelengths through MIPS 24 ÎŒm\mu m reveals a diverse set of disk evolutionary states, including a high fraction of transitional disks, although similar data for all disk-bearing members would provide better constraints. We combine our results with those for other young clusters to study the global evolution of dust/gas disks. For nominal cluster ages, the e-folding times (τo\tau_{o}) for the frequency of warm dust and gas are 2.75 Myr and 1.75 Myr respectively. Assuming a revised set of ages for some clusters (e.g. Bell et al. 2013), these timescales increase to 5.75 and 3.75 Myr, respectively, implying a significantly longer typical protoplanetary disk lifetime. The transitional disk duration, averaged over multiple evolutionary pathways, is ∌\sim 1 Myr. Finally, 24 ÎŒ\mum excess frequencies for 4-6 M⊙_{\odot} stars appear lower than for 1-2.5 M⊙_{\odot} stars in other 10-30 Myr old clusters.Comment: 35 pages, 6 tables, 21 figures; Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journa

    Space-time trellis code construction for fast fading channels

    Abstract—The need for bandwidth- and power-efficient wireless communication systems has raised considerable interest in space-time codes. In this work, we propose a systematic space-time code construction procedure for fast fading channels. The method can be used to design space-time codes for an arbitrary number of transmit antennas and any memoryless modulation. We introduce a new design criterion that ensures full spatial diversity and de-velop the code design method based on this criterion. The flexibil-ity of the proposed approach is demonstrated by designing space-time trellis codes for 2, 3 and 4 transmit antennas with QPSK, 8PSK and 4ASK modulations. I

    An Econometric Macro-model of Transition: Policy Choices in the Pre-Accession Period

    This paper analyses current policy choices facing the candidate countries for EU accession using newly developed econometric macromodels of Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovenia and Estonia. The models allow for endogenous growth, and they have been incorporated into an existing global econometric model (NiGEM). This allows long-term projections to be made consistently with expected developments in other economies and allows full feedbacks with the rest of the world so that we can understand impacts on existing EU members as well as the candidate countries. This paper has several novel features, in that we use modern panel data techniques on short time series data in order to construct models of a number of economies. In constructing the models, we have taken special care to consider the roles of openness and foreign investment on productivity and growth. Different policies toward growth and the enhancement of technology transfer are analysed using the models, and policy advice on the accession and integration are made.accession. macro-model. panel data. transition.

    Rate Efficient Wireless Image Transmission using MIMO-OFDM

    In this paper, we propose a rate efficient JPEG 2000 image transmission system over hybrid wireless networks using MIMO-OFDM. The objective is to minimize the expected end-to-end distortion given the rate constraint, which is achieved by jointly adjusting source coding schemes and channel coding rates. In this system, MIMO-OFDM is used to increase the channel capacity and mitigate the inter-symbol interference, variable rate space frequency codes and Reed Solomon codes are adopted to combat the channel errors, and error resilient source coding schemes are applied to restrict the error propagation. In case network congestion may happen, packet erasure codes are used to alleviate the packet dropping. The advantages of the proposed system lie in three aspects: adaptivity, optimality, and low complexity. Based on the characteristics of the image content, the estimated channel conditions, and the distortion constraint, the proposed low-complexity joint source channel coding and rate control algorithm adjusts the coding and transmission strategies adaptively, which can approximate the optimal solution with a tight bound

    Characterisation of high 1,3-distearoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycerol content stearins produced by acidolysis of high oleic sunflower oil with stearic and palmitic acids

    Nine different stearin fractions with 1,3-distearoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycerol (StOSt) contents ranging from 69–84% were obtained via fractionation from fats produced by acidolysis of high oleic sunflower oil (HOSO) with various mixtures of stearic (either 95 or 98% pure) and palmitic acids (98% pure). Samples were further treated with silica to reduce the oxidised glyceride and DAG content. Isothermal crystallisation at 20°C showed a single main peak, but evidence of crystallisation during the initial DSC transient was also apparent for high StOSt content samples. This was confirmed as the α form by stop-and-return DSC and XRD. The main crystallisation event was generally faster (including a shorter induction time) for samples with higher StOSt levels (lower POSt levels). Silica treatment generally accelerated transformations to higher polymorphs (Îł, ÎČâ€Č and ÎČ). Raman microscopy experiments showed that crystallisation of the ÎČ-form was achieved after 7 days storage at 20°C but only in the silica treated stearin samples. This is consistent with higher solid fat content (SFC) values that were obtained with silica treated samples, which also increased with higher levels of StOSt. The results suggest that such stearins could potentially replace shea stearin in cocoa butter equivalents (CBE) formulations

    Multi-Messenger Gravitational Wave Searches with Pulsar Timing Arrays: Application to 3C66B Using the NANOGrav 11-year Data Set

    When galaxies merge, the supermassive black holes in their centers may form binaries and, during the process of merger, emit low-frequency gravitational radiation in the process. In this paper we consider the galaxy 3C66B, which was used as the target of the first multi-messenger search for gravitational waves. Due to the observed periodicities present in the photometric and astrometric data of the source of the source, it has been theorized to contain a supermassive black hole binary. Its apparent 1.05-year orbital period would place the gravitational wave emission directly in the pulsar timing band. Since the first pulsar timing array study of 3C66B, revised models of the source have been published, and timing array sensitivities and techniques have improved dramatically. With these advances, we further constrain the chirp mass of the potential supermassive black hole binary in 3C66B to less than (1.65±0.02)×109 M⊙(1.65\pm0.02) \times 10^9~{M_\odot} using data from the NANOGrav 11-year data set. This upper limit provides a factor of 1.6 improvement over previous limits, and a factor of 4.3 over the first search done. Nevertheless, the most recent orbital model for the source is still consistent with our limit from pulsar timing array data. In addition, we are able to quantify the improvement made by the inclusion of source properties gleaned from electromagnetic data to `blind' pulsar timing array searches. With these methods, it is apparent that it is not necessary to obtain exact a priori knowledge of the period of a binary to gain meaningful astrophysical inferences.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures.     UBVRI Light Curves of 44 Type Ia Supernovae

    We present UBVRI photometry of 44 type-Ia supernovae (SN Ia) observed from 1997 to 2001 as part of a continuing monitoring campaign at the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. The data set comprises 2190 observations and is the largest homogeneously observed and reduced sample of SN Ia to date, nearly doubling the number of well-observed, nearby SN Ia with published multicolor CCD light curves. The large sample of U-band photometry is a unique addition, with important connections to SN Ia observed at high redshift. The decline rate of SN Ia U-band light curves correlates well with the decline rate in other bands, as does the U-B color at maximum light. However, the U-band peak magnitudes show an increased dispersion relative to other bands even after accounting for extinction and decline rate, amounting to an additional ~40% intrinsic scatter compared to B-band.Comment: 84 authors, 71 pages, 51 tables, 10 figures.
