Can the Berkeleyan Idealist Resist Spinozist Panpsychism?

    Get PDF
We argue that prevailing definitions of Berkeley’s idealism fail to rule out a nearby Spinozist rival view that we call ‘mind-body identity panpsychism.’ Since Berkeley certainly does not agree with Spinoza on this issue, we call for more care in defining Berkeley’s view. After we propose our own definition of Berkeley’s idealism, we survey two Berkeleyan strategies to block the mind-body identity panpsychist and establish his idealism. We argue that Berkeley should follow Leibniz and further develop his account of the mind’s unity. Unity—not activity—is the best way for Berkeley to establish his view at the expense of his panpsychist competitors

Design requirements for high-efficiency high concentration ratio space solar cells

    Get PDF
A miniaturized Cassegrainian concentrator system concept was developed for low cost, multikilowatt space solar arrays. The system imposes some requirements on solar cells which are new and different from those imposed for conventional applications. The solar cells require a circular active area of approximately 4 mm in diameter. High reliability contacts are required on both front and back surfaces. The back area must be metallurgically bonded to a heat sink. The cell should be designed to achieve the highest practical efficiency at 100 AMO suns and at 80 C. The cell design must minimize losses due to nonuniform illumination intensity and nonnormal light incidence. The primary radiation concern is the omnidirectional proton environment

A Comparative Analysis of the Effects of Positive Specific Feedback & Positive General Feedback on the Bowling Scores of College Age Men & Women

    Get PDF
This study was conducted to examine the effects of positive specific feedback and positive general feedback on the bowling scores of subjects enrolled in two beginning bowling classes. Experimental groups were formed from two intact bowling classes, and a group of fifteen volunteers who made up the control group. The PSF group which contained twenty-eight subjects, was provided with positive specific feedback throughout the course of the study. The PGF group which contained thirty-five subjects, was provided with positive general feedback throughout the course of the study. Subjects were administered a pretest at the start of the study which consisted of the average score obtained after completing four games of bowling. Following the pretest, subjects in the PSF and PGF groups received eleven sessions of bowling instruction and twelve sessions of bowling competition. Subjects in the control group received no bowling instruction or practice. At the completion of the study subjects were administered a post-test which consisted of the average score obtain after completing tour games of bowling

Victims and international criminal justice: a vexed question?

    Get PDF
Despite the growing attention being paid to "victims” in the framework of criminal proceedings, this attention does not seem to be meeting their needs under either national criminal justice systems or the international regime. In the latter, the difficulties encountered by the victims are aggravated by factors specifically arising from the prosecution and punishment of mass crimes at international level. This has prompted the authors to point out that the prime purpose of criminal law is to convict or acquit the accused, and to suggest that the task of attending to the victims should perhaps be left to other entitie

Evaluation of Climate Change Adaptation Measures: Portfolio and Allocation Analysis

    Get PDF
This portfolio and allocation analysis is the first report of the DEval evaluation on climate change adaptation measures. The subject of the study is the German Federal Government's international climate policy commitment in the field of climate change adaptation. This report focuses on the relevance and coherence of the German adaptation portfolio. The methodological approach of the evaluation is essentially based on a macro-quantitative portfolio and allocation analysis. The evaluation combines methods of statistical data analysis with a document study and qualitative interviews. The portfolio and allocation analysis arrives at the following key findings: The objectives of the Federal Government's international commitment to climate policy are consistent with relevant strategic frameworks and (global) agendas. Germany sets relevant thematic priorities through the work of several ministries and is clearly oriented towards international priorities. A more nuanced picture emerges with regard to the actual allocation of funds: the more vulnerable to climate change a country is, the more likely it is to receive funds from Germany for adaptation measures. Germany is more likely to make commitments to countries with low adaptive capacity. However, the level of vulnerability has no effect on the level of commitments. In addition, Germany is more likely to commit a higher level of funds, and go to countries where many other donors are already active in the field of climate change adaptation, thus contributing to donor fragmentation. Contrary to the Federal Government's claims, the Small Island Developing States, which are often severely affected by the consequences of climate change, benefit less commonly and to a lesser extent from German adaptation commitments than other countries. In the overall evaluation, the German adaptation portfolio therefore only partially conforms to its own as well as international standards with regard to the relevance and coherence of the Federal Government's international climate policy commitment
