    This essay reviews recent developments in embedding data management and curation skills into information technology, library and information science, and research-based postgraduate courses in various national contexts. The essay also investigates means of joining up formal education with professional development training opportunities more coherently. The potential for using professional internships as a means of improving communication and understanding between disciplines is also explored. A key aim of this essay is to identify what level of complementarity is needed across various disciplines to most effectively and efficiently support the entire data curation lifecycle

    This essay discusses the importance of the areas of infrastructure and testing to help digital preservation services demonstrate reliability, transparency, and accountability. It encourages practitioners to build a strong culture in which transparency and collaborations between technical frameworks are valued highly. It also argues for devising and applying agreed-upon metrics that will enable the systematic analysis of preservation infrastructure. The essay begins by defining technical infrastructure and testing in the digital preservation context, provides case studies that exemplify both progress and challenges for technical alignment in both areas, and concludes with suggestions for achieving greater degrees of technical alignment going forward

    Issues in digital preservation: towards a new research agenda

    Digital Preservation has evolved into a specialized, interdisciplinary research discipline of its own, seeing significant increases in terms of research capacity, results, but also challenges. However, with this specialization and subsequent formation of a dedicated subgroup of researchers active in this field, limitations of the challenges addressed can be observed. Digital preservation research may seem to react to problems arising, fixing problems that exist now, rather than proactively researching new solutions that may be applicable only after a few years of maturing. Recognising the benefits of bringing together researchers and practitioners with various professional backgrounds related to digital preservation, a seminar was organized in Schloss Dagstuhl, at the Leibniz Center for Informatics (18-23 July 2010), with the aim of addressing the current digital preservation challenges, with a specific focus on the automation aspects in this field. The main goal of the seminar was to outline some research challenges in digital preservation, providing a number of "research questions" that could be immediately tackled, e.g. in Doctoral Thesis. The seminar intended also to highlight the need for the digital preservation community to reach out to IT research and other research communities outside the immediate digital preservation domain, in order to jointly develop solutions

    Sunset-calc: An R Shiny Application for Processing Thermo-Optical Analysis Data from Atmospheric Aerosol Measurements

    Atmospheric aerosols are harmful to human health and affect the climate. We use radiocarbon for the source apportionment of carbonaceous aerosols to unequivocally separate fossil form non-fossil sources. We use thermal-optical analysis (TOA) for radiocarbon measurement of the organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) fractions, which requires physical OC/EC separation. TOA relies on the changes in the optical behaviour of carbon when OC is thermally separated from EC. Thermal-optical OC/EC separation leads to partial EC-loss and the conversion of some OC to EC (charring). EC-loss and charring are artifacts which falsify the results of the quantification and must be corrected for. Furthermore, quantifications with custom TOA protocols are not supported with the provided device software. These calculations were previously performed with various spreadsheet style templates and other tools. With Sunset-calc, we aimed to bundle the data processing and develop an extendable and simple web application. With R Shiny, we found a powerful and simple language also for people with little prior programming skills to build rich web applications. We have deployed Sunset-calc on an on-premises R server (14c.unibe.ch/sunsetcalc), which is publicly accessible and particularly useful for our collaborators outside of the University.     Effect of the cation structure on the properties of homobaric imidazolium ionic liquids

    In this work we investigate the structure–property relationships in a series of alkylimidazolium ionic liquids with almost identical molecular weight. Using a combination of theoretical calculations and experimental measurements, we have shown that re-arranging the alkyl side chain or adding functional groups results in quite distinct features in the resultant ILs. The synthesised ILs, although structurally very similar, cover a wide spectrum of properties ranging from highly fluid, glass forming liquids to high melting point crystalline salts. Theoretical ab initio calculations provide insight on minimum energy orientations for the cations, which then are compared to experimental X-ray crystallography measurements to extract information on hydrogen bonding and to verify our understanding of the studied structures. Molecular dynamics simulations of the simplest (core) ionic liquids are used in order to help us interpret our experimental results and understand better why methylation of C2 position of the imidazolium ring results in ILs with such different properties compared to their non-methylated analogues

    Acute Thiopurine Overdose: Analysis of Reports to a National Poison Centre 1995-2013

    Literature regarding acute human toxicity of thiopurines is limited to a handful of case reports. Our objectives were to describe all cases of overdose with thiopurines reported to the Swiss Toxicological Information Centre between 1995–2013. A retrospective analysis was performed to determine circumstances, magnitude, management and outcome of overdose with these substances. A total of 40 cases (14 paediatric) were reported (azathioprine, n = 35; 6-mercaptopurine, n = 5). Of these, 25 were with suicidal intent, 12 were accidental and 3 were iatrogenic errors. The magnitude of overdose ranged from 1.5 to 43 (median 8) times the usual dose in adults. Twelve cases (30%) had attributable symptoms. The majority of these were minor and included gastrointestinal complaints and liver function test and blood count abnormalities. Symptoms were experienced by patients who took at least 1.5-times their usual daily thiopurine dose. Overdoses over two or more consecutive days, even if of modest size, were less well tolerated. One case of azathioprine and allopurinol co-ingestion over consecutive days led to agranulocytosis. Decontamination measures were undertaken in 11 cases (10 activated charcoal, 1 gastric lavage) and these developed fewer symptoms than untreated patients. This study shows that acute overdoses with thiopurines have a favourable outcome in the majority of cases and provides preliminary evidence that gastrointestinal decontamination with activated charcoal may reduce symptom development after overdose of these substances if patients present to medical services soon after ingestion

    An “interaction-mediating” strategy towards enhanced solubility and redox properties of organics for aqueous flow batteries

    Aqueous redox flow batteries using electroactive organic materials are currently attracting significant attention. However, the influence of supporting electrolytes on the aqueous solubility, electrochemical reversibility and chemical stability of the organic components has rarely been investigated. Here, a new electrolyte design strategy towards enhanced solubility and chemical stability of active materials is proposed by using interaction-mediating species. 3 molality aqueous imidazolium chlorides, with high ionic conductivity and water-like flowability, enable a record aqueous solubility of 4.3 M for a commercially available nitroxyl radical and reversible 2e^{-} reaction of unmodified methyl viologen at moderate concentrations. With 0.6 M electrolyte, flow cell shows remarkable chemical stability of the nitroxyl radical, excellent cycling stability over 250 cycles at 80 mA cm^{-2}, and a peak power density of 121.6 mW cm^{-2} at 175 mA cm^{-2}. Furthermore, nitroxyl radical catholyte with a concentration of 3 M is tested in a flow cell. It maintains an impressive steady energy efficiency of 65% at 30 mA cm^{-2}. This work paves a new way for the development of high performance aqueous electrolytes based on organic materials

    Heavy quarks (charm and bottoms) are one of the few probes which are sensitive to the degrees of freedom of a Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP), which cannot be revealed by lattice gauge calculations in equilibrium. Due to the rapid expansion of the QGP energetic heavy quarks do not come to an equilibrium with the QGP. Their energy loss during the propagation through the QGP medium depends strongly on the modelling of the interaction of the heavy quarks with the QGP quarks and gluons, i.e. on the assuption of the degrees of freedom of the plasma. Here we compare the results of different models, the pQCD based Monte-Carlo (MC@sHQ), the Dynamical Quasi Particle Model (DQPM) and the effective mass approach, for the drag force in a thermalized QGP and discuss the sensitivity of heavy quark energy loss on the properties of the QGP as well as on non-equilibrium dynamicsComment: proceedings symposion "New Horizons" Makutsi, South Africa, Nov 201
