Introduction: Cicatricial alopecia is a disease of scalp in which the major clinical feature is patchy loss of hair accompanied with scarring. Cicatricial alopecia is caused by diverse group of hair disorders in which healthy tissue is replaced by scar tissue and causes permanent hair loss. It affects both men and women, most commonly adults. It can be correlated to Indralupta a type of Kapalagta Roga by Vagbhata. The basic pathophysiology of Indralupta is the vitiated Tridosha and Rakta affecting the scalp. The pathology also reveals the blockage of hair follicles with aggravated Rakta and Kapha which further prevents regrowth of hairs. This is the case report of 22 year old male who complained of patchy loss of hair at the left parital region of scalp, associated with pus discharge and swelling since 4 years. Materials and Methods: The subject who approached Shalakya Tantra OPD of Government Ayurveda Medical College, Bengaluru with symptoms of patchy hair loss at left parietal region since 4 years was systemically reviewed and Rakthamokshana, Lepa and Rasayana line of treatment is adopted. Results: The subject showed marked improvement as depicted in the photographs taken at different levels of treatment. Discussion: Idralupta is a Kshudraroga affecting scalp and involving Pitta, Vata Dusti, later Kapha and Rakta blocking the Romakupa. By adopting the holistic approach with both internal and external treatment modalities an attempt is made to bring about satisfactory results

Objective: To estimate the proportion of smokers among passengers of air-conditioned (A/C) coaches running between Karachi and Hyderabad. Pakistan.METHOD: A cross-sectional survey was done on passengers and staff members of 20 air-conditioned coaches. Results: Of 847 passengers interviewed, 17.3% were smokers and 11.7% passengers smoked during travel while rest of them remained passive smokers. Out of 147 smokers 91.2% were literate persons. Among staff members 59.3% were smokers. Approximately 56% of smokers among passengers were in the age range of 14-40 years. In 95% of A/C coaches there were no anti-smoking warning signs or written words present.CONCLUSION: In this study majority of smokers were literate, so inter-personal communication and counseling may change the smoking behavior. Ministry of Health should disseminate educational messages regarding hazards of passive smoking among commuters of AC coaches and above all proper implementation of legislation for smoking at public places especially in transport

In India, medicines based on herbal origin have been the basis of treatment and cure for various diseases. The Indian Cow, Bos indicus, is a most veneered and valuable animal in religious scriptures. Cow urine has found therapeutic applications since days of yore. Cow urine based preparations have powerful antimicrobial, antiviral, anti allergic, and antioxidant activity. So the current research is mainly centered on the exploration of the antimicrobial powers of cow urine and incorporation of cow urine into gel formulation. The gels were prepared by using carbopol 940, propylene glycol, glycerin, triethanolamine, distilled water along with cow urine distillate and Azadirachta indica extract. The prepared gels were evaluated for physical appearance, spreadability, pH, Homogeneity and viscosity. The present study analyzes the antibacterial and antifungal activity of Cow Urine Distillate against the clinical pathogenic microorganisms such as Bacillus subtilis and Staphalococcus aureus. Maximum antibacterial activity was observed in Bacillus subtilis than Staphalococcus aureus. Antifungal activity of cow urine distillate was analysed against Aspergillus niger. The result revealed optimum characteristics features of gel formulation and confirm antimicrobial potential of prepared gel

Abstract Background: A 22-month open-label randomized comparative study was conducted at tertiary care centre attached to medical college in metropolitan city in Maharashtra from Dec 2011 to Oct 2013, aiming to compare the effectiveness of three corticosteroid treatments - oral deflazacort, oral prednisolone, and inhaled budesonide in managing salbutamol-refractory asthma in children aged 1-14 years. Methods: 90 afebrile children were equally allocated to the different treatment arms. Treatment arm A received oral Deflazacort (1mg/kg/day alternate day), treatment arm B received oral prednisolone (1mg/kg/day), and treatment arm C received budesonide inhaler (100 mcg/puff twice a day) for seven days, along with salbutamol inhalations twice a day. The primary outcome measured was the change in FEV1 and PEFR as a percentage of the predicted value from baseline, and secondary outcomes included changes in FVC, wheeze frequency, VCD, and FEV1/FVC. Results: Wheeze varied across treatment arms on day 3 (A: 16.3%, B: 26.7%, C: 70.0%), day 7 (A: 10.0%, B: 0.0%, C: 10.0%), and day 28 (A: 16.7%, B: 0.0%, C: 16.7%). Mean PEFR values on days 1, 3, 7, and 28 were 140.67, 180, 202.67, 216.67 for Treatment Arm A; 141.43, 190, 203, 221 for Treatment Arm B; and 151.00, 179.33, 187.33, 202.00 for Treatment Arm C, respectively. FEV1 and FEV1/FVC scores showed no significant differences across the three treatment arms. Conclusion: In treating salbutamol-refractory asthma in children, all three medications displayed comparable efficacy, aiding clinicians in treatment selection and improving outcomes. Future research should prioritize long-term effects and safety for optimal management

    Get PDF
Introduction: Retinal pigment epithelial detachments (PEDs) are characterized by separation between the RPE and the inner most aspect of Bruch's membrane. The space created by this separation is occupied by blood, serous exudate, drusenoid material, fibro vascular tissue or a combination. The symptoms of RPE detachment can be considered under Drustigata Rogas mentioned by Sushrutha. This is a case study of a 73year old male patient who was diagnosed with PED with Subretinal fluid in Right eye since 8 months. Materials and methods: The subject who approached Shalakya Tantra OPD of Government Ayurveda Medical College Bengaluru with symptoms of diminished vision for both near and far objects in right eye associated with flashes in front of eye since 8 months, patient underwent two courses of inpatient management, which included Ayurvedic oral medicines, and external therapies for the eyes (Kriyakalpa) and head. Results: Signs of improvement in visual acuity and optical coherence tomography (OCT) were observed at the end of both treatments. Conclusion: The main aim of management was to preserve and give a better quality of vision for the patient. The results indicate the potential of Ayurvedic treatments to manage and maintain vision in REP detachment
