Agroalimentarias del Plan Nacional I+D+I. Dicho proyecto coordinó 10 centros de
investigación de las Comunidades Autónomas de Andalucía, Aragón, Castilla-La
Mancha, Galicia, Murcia y Comunidad Valenciana.

Effects of landscape structure on medicinal plant richness in home gardens: Evidence for the environmental scarcity compensation hypothesis
Our research involves of how Paraguayan migrants who are living in Misiones, Argentina, manage medicinal plants in home gardens, and how this practice can be related to the landscape. We examine the relationship between the richness of home garden medicinal plants and landscape variables (e.g., distance to the forest) by applying PLS analysis, which combines principal component analysis with linear regression. We surveyed 60 home gardens localized in a rural area, and we characterized the surrounding landscape with geospatial tools. Paraguayans’ home gardens are extremely diverse sites (total of 136 medicinal species), where both native (82) and introduced species (50) are managed. People who live close to the native forest or mixed use areas (e.g., farms, secondary vegetation) tend to possess less native plants in their gardens because they are available nearby. While gardeners, who live in proximity to tree crops (e.g., pine plantations), have reduced access to wild medicinal resources; therefore, their effort is concentrated on maintaining native plants. These results reflect a relationship between accessibility to medicinal plants in the landscape and the management practices in the home gardens, a neglected driver in explaining the richness and composition of the medicinal plants in home gardens so far. Thus, we contributed evidence in support of the environmental scarcity compensation hypothesis. Finally, our study supports the idea that home gardens appear to function as a springboard for plant domestication.Fil: Kujawska, Monika. University of Lodz; PoloniaFil: Zamudio, Fernando. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and nucleic acid modifications during seed dormancy
[Abstract] The seed is the propagule of higher plants and allows its dissemination and the survival of the species. Seed dormancy prevents premature germination under favourable conditions. Dormant seeds are only able to germinate in a narrow range of conditions. During after-ripening (AR), a mechanism of dormancy release, seeds gradually lose dormancy through a period of dry storage. This review is mainly focused on how chemical modifications of mRNA and genomic DNA, such as oxidation and methylation, affect gene expression during late stages of seed development, especially during dormancy. The oxidation of specific nucleotides produced by reactive oxygen species (ROS) alters the stability of the seed stored mRNAs, being finally degraded or translated into non-functional proteins. DNA methylation is a well-known epigenetic mechanism of controlling gene expression. In Arabidopsis thaliana, while there is a global increase in CHH-context methylation through embryogenesis, global DNA methylation levels remain stable during seed dormancy, decreasing when germination occurs. The biological significance of nucleic acid oxidation and methylation upon seed development is discussed.Comunidad de Madrid; APOYO-JOVENES-MT0KUE-25-MKITF

Phosphorus export from catchments: a global view
16 pages, figures, and tables statistics. We reviewed global P export and its controlling factors from 685 world rivers. We used
available continuous (runoff, rainfall, catchment area, % land use, and population density) and discrete
(runoff type, soil type, biome, dominant land use, dominant type of forest, occurrence of stagnant water
bodies in catchment, and Gross Product per Capita [GPC]) variables to predict export of P fractions. P
export (kg P km22 y21) spanned 6 orders of magnitude worldwide. The distribution of all fractions of P
export (total P [TP], soluble reactive P [SRP], and nonSRP [dissolved organic and particle-bound P]) was
right skewed. Export of nonSRP had the highest coefficient of variability, and nonSRP was the dominant
part of export. The available environmental variables predicted global P export fairly well (R2 = 0.73) if
total N export was included in calculations. The unexplained variance in P export might be attributed to
noise in the data set, inaccuracy of measurements of environmental variables at fine scales, lack of
quantitative data on anthropogenic P sources, insufficient knowledge of P behavior in catchment soils, and
nonlinearity of controlling processes. P exports were highly variable among catchment types, and runoff
and population density were the predictors shared by most models. P export appeared to be controlled by
different sets of environmental variables in different types of catchments. Quasi-empirical, mechanistic
models of P export performed better than did empirical models. Our mechanistic understanding of P
export could be improved by refining current analytical methods to obtain fast and reliable values of all P
fractions in aquatic ecosystems and by incorporating better and more detailed data on catchment features,
anthropogenic sources of P, and instream variables in a mechanistic modelling framework.Peer reviewe
Nitrate-induced early transcriptional changes during imbibition in non-after-ripened Sisymbrium officinale seeds.
We have here demonstrated for the first time that nitrate not only accelerates testa rupture of non- AR seeds but also modifies expression pattern of the cell-wall remodeling proteins (mannanases; SoMAN6 and SoMAN7) and key genes belonging to metabolism and signaling of ABA (SoNCED6, SoNCED9, SoCYP707A2 and SoABI5) and GAs (SoGA3ox, SoGA20ox, SoGA2ox and SoRGL2). These results were obtained during Sisymbrium officinale seed imbibition in the absence of endosperm rupture. Exogenous ABA induced a notable inhibition of testa rupture in both absence and presence of nitrate being this effect sharply reversed by GA4+7. However, nitrate was capable to provoke testa rupture in absence of ABA synthesis. The expression of SoMAN6 and SoMAN7 were positively altered by nitrate. Although ABA synthesis seems apparent at the start of non-AR seed imbibition, taken together the results of SoNCED6, SoNCED9 and SoCYP707A2 expression seem to suggest that nitrate leads to a strong net ABA decrease. Likewise, nitrate positively affected the SoABI5 expression when the SoNCED9 expression was also stimulated. By contrast, at the early and final of imbibition, nitrate clearly inhibited the SoABI5 expression. The expression of SoGA2ox6 and SoGA3ox2 are strongly inhibited by nitrate whereas of SoGA20ox6 was stimulated. On the other hand, SoRGL2 transcript level decreased in the presence of nitrate. Taken together, the results presented here suggest that the nitrate signaling is already operative during the non-AR S. officinale seeds imbibition. The nitrate, in cross-talk with the AR network likely increases the favorable molecular conditions that trigger germination
Arabidopsis thaliana bZIP44: a transcription factor affecting seed germination and expression of the mannanase-encoding gene AtMAN7.
Endo-β-mannanases (MAN; EC. 3.2.1.78) catalyze the cleavage of β1[RIGHTWARDS ARROW]4 bonds in mannan polymers and have been associated with the process of weakening the tissues surrounding the embryo during seed germination. In germinating Arabidopsis thaliana seeds, the most highly expressed MAN gene is AtMAN7 and its transcripts are restricted to the micropylar endosperm and to the radicle tip just before radicle emergence. Mutants with a T-DNA insertion in AtMAN7 have a slower germination than the wild type. To gain insight into the transcriptional regulation of the AtMAN7 gene, a bioinformatic search for conserved non-coding cis-elements (phylogenetic shadowing) within the Brassicaceae MAN7 gene promoters has been done, and these conserved motifs have been used as bait to look for their interacting transcription factors (TFs), using as a prey an arrayed yeast library from A. thaliana. The basic-leucine zipper TF AtbZIP44, but not the closely related AtbZIP11, has thus been identified and its transcriptional activation upon AtMAN7 has been validated at the molecular level. In the knock-out lines of AtbZIP44, not only is the expression of the AtMAN7 gene drastically reduced, but these mutants have a significantly slower germination than the wild type, being affected in the two phases of the germination process, both in the rupture of the seed coat and in the breakage of the micropylar endosperm cell walls. In the over-expression lines the opposite phenotype is observed
