    Effect of Irrigation and Potash Levels on Keeping Quality of Potato

    Irrigation and fertilizer are the most dominating factors, in deciding the keeping quality of potato. It is, therefore, essential to formulate the efficient, reliable and economically viable irrigation management strategy with the use of potassium nutrient in order to produce better keeping quality. The investigation comprising four levels of irrigation (25, 30, 35 and 40 mm CPE (Cumulative pan evaporation) and four levels of potash (0, 100, 125 and 150 kg/ha) was carried out at Research Farm of the Department of Vegetable Science, CCS Haryana Agricultural University, (Haryana) Hisar, India during two years to find out the optimum level of irrigation and potash for obtaining higher yield of potatoes with better keeping quality at ambient room temperature. The potato variety used for the investigation was Kufri Bahar. The treatments were laid out in a split plot design with three replications. The increasing levels of irrigation and potash showed significant improvement in keeping quality parameters of potato. Likewise, the values for physiological loss in weight and decay loss of potato tubers (%) at 15, 30, 45 and 60 days after harvest were the lowest with irrigation level 40 mm CPE and application of potash @ 150 kg/ha. The two years results suggest that the irrigation level 40 mm CPE along with potash @ 150 kg/ha has shown the best treatment combination for the storage of potato at ambient room temperature under semiarid conditions of Hisar (Haryana)

    Expression of genes related to Na<sup>+</sup> exclusion and proline accumulation in tolerant and susceptible wheat genotypes under salt stress

    In the present investigation, expression of genes related to Na+ exclusion such as salt overly sensitive (TaSOS1) and Na+/H+ antiporter (TaNHX1) and proline accumulation such as pyrroline-5-carboxylate reductase (P5CR) and glutamate synthase (GOGAT) was studied in seedlings of Kharchia 65 (Kh 65, salt tolerant) and HD 2009 (sensitive) under salt stress (ECe, 12 dSm–1) and controlled conditions. As compared to HD 2009, Kh 65 showed significantly lower accumulation of Na+ (p + exclusion in root and compartmentation in leaf and increased proline concentration are associated with tolerance to salinity stress in wheat. The information will be useful for improving wheat genotypes for salt tolerance

    Variability assessment and construction of infectious clone of Indian Apple Scar Skin Viroid

    Apple scar skin viroid (ASSVd) is widely distributed and economically important pome-fruit infecting viroid belonging to the genus Apscaviroid. It causes huge economic losses to the apple industry. Apple fruits with dappling, scarring, cracking and deformation symptoms were noticed during survey of apple growing regions of Himachal Pradesh, India. ASSVd was detected from four isolates showing dappled fruits. Molecular characterization of the viroid was done. Ten clones each from five isolates were sequenced out of which seven new sequence variants of ASSVd were found. Four of the clones were 330 nucleotides (nt) long and the other eight had an additional nucleotide. The clones showed significant sequence variability (94-100%) with each other. Variability was more common in the pathogenic domain of the viroid genome. Present isolates grouped with some Chinese and Korean isolates in phylogenetic analysis. The study reports seven new sequence variants of ASSVd and also gives a first molecular evidence of a viroid infection (ASSVd) in apple from India.     A PROSPECTIVE OBSERVATIONAL STUDY ON RISK FACTORS AND MANAGEMENT OF STROKE AT A TERTIARY CARE TEACHING HOSPITAL

    Objectives: To determine the prevalence of stroke and its management with various risk factors, i.e. non-modifiable and modifiable at a tertiary care teaching hospital.Methods: It is a prospective and observational study conducted over a period of six months including established cases of stroke. The study was carried out in100 patients to evaluate risk factors and management of stroke. The data obtained with the designed data collection form were analyzed using Odds ratio and Chi-Square test.Results: Ischemic stroke accounted for 70% of cases followed by Intracerebral Hemorrhage (20%) Subarachnoid hemorrhage (5%) and Transient Ischemic Attack (5%). Out of 100 patients, there were 74 male and 26 female patients, indicating males at higher risk. Majority of patients were between the age group 41-60 y. based on the Odds ratio hypertensive and alcoholics were more prone to stroke occurrence and recurrence. Chi-Square test performed for age and gender was not significant at significance level P&lt;0.05.Conclusion: In this study, ischemic stroke was most prevalent. Hypertension was the major risk factor indicating strong evidence of stroke occurrence and recurrence. The factors having the major implication in the development of stroke were Hypertension, Alcoholism, Smoking, Diabetes Mellitus, Epilepsy, Coronary Artery Disease, Tobacco, and others. Proper management includes non-pharmacological (physiotherapy) along with pharmacological treatment (Osmotic diuretics were most commonly prescribed followed by hypolipidemics, cognition enhancers, anticoagulants, dual antihypertensive therapy)

    Composition and Functional Potential of the Human Mammary Microbiota Prior to and following Breast Tumor Diagnosis

    Microbiota studies have reported changes in the microbial composition of the breast upon cancer development. However, results are inconsistent and limited to the later phases of cancer development (after diagnosis). We analyzed and compared the resident bacterial taxa of histologically normal breast tissue (healthy, H, n = 49) with those of tissues donated prior to (prediagnostic, PD, n = 15) and after (adjacent normal, AN, n = 49, and tumor, T, n = 46) breast cancer diagnosis (n total = 159). DNA was isolated from tissue samples and submitted for Illumina MiSeq paired-end sequencing of the V3-V4 region of the 16S gene. To infer bacterial function in breast cancer, we predicted the functional bacteriome from the 16S sequencing data using PICRUSt2. Bacterial compositional analysis revealed an intermediary taxonomic signature in the PD tissue relative to that of the H tissue, represented by shifts in Bacillaceae, Burkholderiaceae, Corynebacteriaceae, Streptococcaceae, and Staphylococcaceae. This compositional signature was enhanced in the AN and T tissues. We also identified significant metabolic reprogramming of the microbiota of the PD, AN, and T tissue compared with the H tissue. Further, preliminary correlation analysis between host transcriptome profiling and microbial taxa and genes in H and PD tissues identified altered associations between the human host and mammary microbiota in PD tissue compared with H tissue. These findings suggest that compositional shifts in bacterial abundance and metabolic reprogramming of the breast tissue microbiota are early events in breast cancer development that are potentially linked with cancer susceptibility

A business model has been designed to scale up tools and materials through established private sector agencies like Agrovet or through organizations such as farmer cooperatives. For instance, the hand held corn sheller and composite vegetable kits are two top products. Agrovets are able to sell more vegetable composite kits (Sustainable Agricultural Kits), whereas a higher number of corn shellers are being supplied to the community by farmer cooperatives. Extension services are provided mainly through NGO and government agencies
