Behavior of Poly-A onto Kaolin
A combination of geochemical variables is necessary to explain the origin of life on Earth. Thus, in this work the sorption of Poly-A on a clay mineral (kaolinite) was studied to get an insight about the sorption capacity at different times and pH values, as well as to confirm the capabilities of the clay to protect the sorbate from an external source of ionizing radiation. Poly-A presented a high percentage of sorption in the clay, especially in acidic environments, and this percentage sharply decrease in alkaline media. On the other hand, Poly-A’s recovery was higher in the system with clay, confirming its protection role

La tecnología lítica tallada del modo 3 del abrigo de Benzú (norte de Africa). Enmarque en su territorio inmediato
The rock-shelter of Benzú is located near the city of Ceuta in North Africa. The Benzú rock-shelter contains a sequence of 7 archaeological levels, which are associated with a clearly defined Mode 3 lithic technology. The similarities with other assemblages found in the south of the Iberian Peninsula are clear. We must also emphasise the exploitation of marine resources by these hunter-gatherer societies from the beginning of the Middle Pleistocene sequence. On the basis of this archaeological evidence and in the context of recent studies on North Africa, this work assesses the possible relationships and contacts between societies on both shores of the historical region of the Straits of Gibraltar.El Abrigo de Benzú está situado en la ciudad de Ceuta, en el norte de África. Isolation and characterization of mercury resistant trichoderma strains from soil with high levels of mercury and its effects on Arabidopsis thaliana mercury uptake
"Traditional mining activities are usually correlated with high levels of soil pollution, which is a major environmental concern. Extensive mining activities have taken place in the San Joaquin region in the State of Querétaro, México resulting in high levels of mercury soil pollution (up to 1532 ± 300 mg/kg). We isolated mercury-resistant fungal strains from the San Joaquin region soils and identified them through morphologic characteristics and ITS rDNA region sequence analysis. We determined that fungi isolated belong to the genus Trichoderma. All the isolates selected showed the ability to catalyze the volatilization of Hg. For air sampling, an active sampling device was constructed and using acid KMnO4 as an absorbent, the concentration of mercury in solution was determined through the cold vapor atomic absorption method. The results show mercury volatilization from the fungal species assay, with a maximum of 213.04 ± 32.6 µg/m3 while mycelium accumulation ranged from less than 17.5 ± 2.9 to 20.0 ± 3.4 µg/g. The fungal isolates were also evaluated for their ability to reduce mercury uptake in Arabidopsis thaliana. These observations suggest the utility of Trichoderma for the mobilization of mercury in those contaminated soils.
Early use of marine resources by Middle/Upper Pleistocene human societies: The case of Benzú rockshelter (northern Africa)
This article examines the role played by marine resources for hunter-gatherer groups of the Middle/ Upper Pleistocenein the geohistorical regionaround the Straitsof Gibraltar, onthe basisof newevidence collected at the rock shelter of Benzú (North Africa). The stratigraphic sequence at Benzú has been dated to between 254 and 70 ka. The excavations have revealed the exploitation of marine gastropods and bivalves, alongside fish. The most common taxon in the sequence is the genus Patella. The analysis of the molluscs and their spatial distribution shows that these animals were purposely collected by humans, probably as a food source. In order to contribute to the debate about the origins and scale of the exploitation of marine resources during the Middle and Upper Pleistocene, the evidence collected at Benzú is interpreted within the broader context of North Africa and southern Europe. The similarity of groups of Homo sapiens sapiens in North Africa and Homo sapiens neanderthalensis in southern Europe in terms of lifestyle and subsistence strategies is interpreted as reflecting equally similar social and economic practices, in spite of the diversity of anthropological perspectives on the relationship between humans and the environment currently in vogue
A clinical practice guideline for the management of the foot and ankle in rheumatoid arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis causes progressive joint destruction in the long term, causing a deterioration of the foot and ankle. A
clinical practice guideline has been created with the main objective of providing recommendations in the field of podiatry
for the conservative management of rheumatoid arthritis. Thus, healthcare professionals involved in foot care of adults with
rheumatoid arthritis will be able to follow practical recommendations. A clinical practice guideline was created includ-
ing a group of experts (podiatrists, rheumatologists, nurses, an orthopaedic surgeon, a physiotherapist, an occupational
therapist and patient with rheumatoid arthritis). Methodological experts using GRADE were tasked with systematically
reviewing the available scientific evidence and developing the information which serves as a basis for the expert group to
make recommendations. Key findings include the efficacy of chiropody in alleviating hyperkeratotic lesions and improv-
ing short-term pain and functionality. Notably, custom and standardized foot orthoses demonstrated significant benefits in
reducing foot pain, enhancing physical function, and improving life quality. Therapeutic footwear was identified as crucial
for pain reduction and mobility improvement, emphasizing the necessity for custom-made options tailored to individual
patient needs. Surgical interventions were recommended for cases which were non-responsive to conservative treatments,
aimed at preserving foot functionality and reducing pain. Moreover, self-care strategies and education were underscored
as essential components for promoting patient independence and health maintenance. A series of recommendations have
been created which will help professionals and patients to manage podiatric pathologies derived from rheumatoid arthritis.Funding for open access publishing: Universidad Málaga/CBU
