    Get PDF
The current article aims to describe the main learners.’ dictionaries and therefore to contribute to what is called dictionary typology. In doing so, the analysis reinforces the idea that dictionary typology and user needs are concepts closely related. Thus, different perspectives are set out in order to deal with the use of dictionaries in both productive and receptive tasks and emphasis is placed on the fact that students of a L2 need more training into dictionary skills in order to take advantage of the valuable information dictionaries provid

    Get PDF

Teaching English for medical translation: a corpus-based approach

    Get PDF
Developing the appropriate linguistic and documentation skills in specialised domains is one of the greatest challenges in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) courses. Among other tools, corpora are intended as efficient resources students can use to improve and develop their thematic, terminological, and phraseological knowledge (Sánchez Ramos, 2020). Based on a non-experimental mixed-methods study, this paper reports the feasibility of a corpus-based approach to teaching medical translation at a postgraduate level. It analyses how a group of 40 postgraduate students at the University of Alcalá (Madrid, Spain) perceive the compilation of their own corpus and the usefulness of corpus management tools (CMTs) in solving thematic, terminological, and phraseological issues. The software LancsBox (Lancaster University) was used, which is a recently created CMT that incorporates automatic tagging, cutting-edge statistics information, and innovative visualization options. The quantitative and qualitative analyses of this data suggest that the ESP students were highly satisfied with the corpus-based approach. Our findings also reveal that postgraduate students incorporated CMTs during the whole course as documentation resources for their translation tasks, and they are willing to use them in their near future professional career. These results show the potential usefulness of CMTs and offer a way of integrating them into the ESP curriculum

The ever-increasing popularity of the mobile application (app) localisation market makes it essential to review localisation training in the translation technology classroom. There is clearly a need for translator trainers to adopt appropriate teaching methodologies so that students will be ready for their future professional endeavours. The present study aims to investigate the students’ perception of a mobile app localisation module on an undergraduate course. Building on an action research methodology, qualitative and quantitative data drawn from discussion groups, direct observation and a final questionnaire, our study reveals that students were highly satisfied with the mobile app localisation module and felt that this training programme was useful in helping them to adapt to the growing demands of the localisation market.

Public service interpreting and translation training: a path towards digital adaptation to machine translation and post-editing

    Get PDF
The ever-increasing demand for immediate access to information means interpreters and translators are increasingly using, and relying on, digital technology in their work. In the migratory context, machine translation (MT) and post-editing (PE) have the potential to greatly increase the efficiency of public service interpreting and translation (PSIT), which is currently experiencing huge demand. This article describes and evaluates the implementation of a module focused on MT and PE within a postgraduate PSIT programme at a Spanish university. A mixed-methods methodology was used to collect both quantitative data (via a questionnaire) and qualitative data (via a reflective essay) from a group of 42 students during the 2020-2021 academic year. The results show that students were satisfied overall with both the content of the module and its implementation. However, they also felt that the module needed to be better integrated within the postgraduate PSIT programme as a whole in order to fully prepare them for their professional careers

Making Ostrom’s framework applicable to characterise social ecological systems at the local level

    Get PDF
Ostrom’s framework to analyse the sustainability of social-ecological systems has attracted great interest in the last years. It was not conceived to characterise systems, but its nature and structure make it very appealing to be used with this objective. However, its use to characterise three social-ecological systems where common-pool resource management is central created some methodological struggles and difficulties for comparing outcomes. This paper aims to present some adaptations developed for improving the framework’s comprehensiveness and practical applicability at local level, such as a transdisciplinary description of the second-level variables, the definition of a set of third-level variables to facilitate and enrich the descriptions and additional guidelines for gathering the information and planning data searching processes at local level. The whole process of adapting and applying the framework was the result of collaboration among scientists, and local researchers and stakeholders. The adapted framework permitted a comprehensive and comparable characterisation of the socialecological systems analysed and facilitated its use by the local communities

Cultural identity in alcoholic beverages advertising

    Get PDF
In order to create an efficient message and to associate specific cultural values to a brand, advertisements refer to the elements within the collective imaginary which identify a region or a country. In this sense, alcoholic beverages advertising stands out for creating universes which refer to the origins of the product, by turning to images which result from stereotypes at times. Thus, when taking a semiotic point of view, it is possible to distinguish how the isotopes which appear within advertisements of alcoholic drinks are different depending on the country, feeding on commonplaces that constitute their cultural identity. Thus, the goal of the present article is to determine the presence of cultural distinctive characteristics of certain regions which are found in advertisements of alcoholic drinks
