Geostatistical Prediction of Ocean Outfall Plume Characteristics Based on an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle
Geostatistics has been successfully used to analyze and characterize the spatial variability of environmental properties. Besides giving estimated values at unsampled locations, it provides a measure of the accuracy of the estimate, which is a significant advantage over traditional methods used to assess pollution. In this work universal block kriging is novelty used to model and map the spatial distribution of salinity measurements gathered by an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle in a sea outfall monitoring campaign, with the aim of distinguishing the effluent plume from the receiving waters, characterizing its spatial variability in the vicinity of the discharge and estimating dilution. The results demonstrate that geostatistical methodology can provide good estimates of the dispersion of effluents that are very valuable in assessing the environmental impact and managing sea outfalls. Moreover, since accurate measurements of the plume’s dilution are rare, these studies might be very helpful in the future to validate dispersion models. This work was supported by project WWECO- Environmental Assessment and Modeling of Wastewater Discharges using Autonomous Underwater Vehicles Bio-optical Observations-funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) under the Program for Research Projects in all scientific areas (Programa de Projectos de Investigação em todos os domínos científicos) (ref. Validity of common modelling approximations for precessing binary black holes with higher-order modes
The current paradigm for constructing waveforms from precessing compact
binaries is to first construct a waveform in a non-inertial, co-precessing
binary source frame followed by a time-dependent rotation to map back to the
physical, inertial frame. A key insight in the construction of these models is
that the co-precessing waveform can be effectively mapped to some equivalent
aligned spin waveform. Secondly, the time-dependent rotation implicitly
introduces -mode mixing, necessitating an accurate description of
higher-order modes in the co-precessing frame. We assess the efficacy of this
modelling strategy in the strong field regime using Numerical Relativity
simulations. We find that this framework allows for the highly accurate
construction of modes in our data set, while for higher order
modes, especially the and modes, we find rather
large mismatches. We also investigate a variant of the approximate map between
co-precessing and aligned spin waveforms, where we only identify the slowly
varying part of the time domain co-precessing waveforms with the aligned-spin
one, but find no significant improvement. Our results indicate that the simple
paradigm to construct precessing waveforms does not provide an accurate
description of higher order modes in the strong-field regime, and demonstrate
the necessity for modelling mode asymmetries and mode-mixing to significantly
improve the description of precessing higher order modes.Comment: Improved version: correcting typos, adding acknowledgement and more

The Impact of Social Isolation during the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Personal Account of Social Isolation
I am no stranger to social isolation and its effects on my mental, emotional and physical health. A variety of factors such as limited research, misconceptions associated with its impact mainly in older adults, and its interchangeability with loneliness, previously impeded people’s knowledge and understanding of the subject. This research paper is a hybrid of personal experiences as well as quantitative and qualitative data that analyzed how the restrictions shed light on the effects and misconceptions of social isolation, especially in the disabled community during the COVID-19 pandemic. Females and males survey participants (N- 68) were asked to report their level of knowledge and experience with social isolation both before and after the implementation of the COVID-19 stay-at-home orders, mask and social distance mandates, while interview participants (N-3) provided first-hand accounts on how the coronavirus pandemic socially impacted people on an individual level within the medical and disabled communities. Results highlighted (1) new awareness and understanding of social isolation, (2) the inaccuracy of the misconception that only older adults are affected by social isolation, (3) exacerbated how those medically compromised are perceived as expendable, and (4) an increase in physical and emotional effects resulting from social isolation. Ultimately, the risks and consequences associated with the social isolation experienced during these last two years have been profound and far-reaching, yet further research and resources dedicated to this issue is needed to better understand the long-lasting impact of social isolation on our society as a whole
Personalization in Digital Advertising
Dissertation presented as the partial requirement for obtaining a Master's degree in Statistics and Information Management, specialization in Marketing Research and CRMThis research studies the impact a well-planned digital advertisement campaign and user-friendly online experience can have on Brands awareness and sales. As the Digital landscape evolves, so has Online Advertisement and Data collection, making it possible for Advertisers to know more about who is navigating online, where they are, and how to approach them. With the gathering of online users’ insights, brands can impact whom they want and how they want to, making their communication more relevant, therefore creating less noise and more conversation. This work aims at proving that these segmented and personalized campaigns lead to more engagement and sales than the ones that just target anybody with no defined criteria. It will also consider the opinions of online users regarding online advertisement and the fact that brands can use their navigating information to plan and implement digital campaigns. With this in mind, it would be possible to detect a relation between advertisement quality and user experience with the increase or decrease of Ad Blockers downloads, especially amongst Generation Z, that is the generation more comfortable with digital technology and will be the consumers of the future. By the end of the study we should be able to understand better the environment of actual digital advertisement and the way it can and should evolve in the future regarding all the insights we are able to collect from this research

Perceptions of effective english teaching in the PNIEB program in Puebla
“This investigation will be focused on the first cycle, fundamentally with the children of third grade of kindergarten. PNIEB is a federal program which has a socio-cultural approach that incorporates social practices of the language, this program started to be proved in seven states mainly: Aguascalientes, Coahuila, Durango, Nuevo León, Sinaloa, Sonora and Tamaulipas; 1000 schools were chosen, among them 300 Kindergartens. These schools were characterized by their urban or semi-urban mode, they were already fully organized and finally they had two or three groups for grade. - This program plans to cover the whole country within no more than ten years from 2011, all the country has been divided in 3 groups, in a plan of three, five and ten years. Puebla is placed in the 5 years plan to have proficient teachers of English covering the four cycles. This program sets 3 hours per week during three days a week, at the end of the course there will be 300 hours. PNIEB uses the common European framework of reference to evaluate students´ progress in order to make objective assessments and pass them to the next level.
Forecasting: theory and practice
Forecasting has always been at the forefront of decision making and planning. The uncertainty that surrounds the future is both exciting and challenging, with individuals and organisations seeking to minimise risks and maximise utilities. The large number of forecasting applications calls for a diverse set of forecasting methods to tackle real-life challenges. This article provides a non-systematic review of the theory and the practice of forecasting. We provide an overview of a wide range of theoretical, state-of-the-art models, methods, principles, and approaches to prepare, produce, organise, and evaluate forecasts. We then demonstrate how such theoretical concepts are applied in a variety of real-life contexts.
We do not claim that this review is an exhaustive list of methods and applications. However, we wish that our encyclopedic presentation will offer a point of reference for the rich work that has been undertaken over the last decades, with some key insights for the future of forecasting theory and practice. Given its encyclopedic nature, the intended mode of reading is non-linear. We offer cross-references to allow the readers to navigate through the various topics. We complement the theoretical concepts and applications covered by large lists of free or open-source software implementations and publicly-available databases.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
In a century in which alternative treatments are indicated more frequently, botulinum toxin represents the most potent biological toxin known to date. Botulinum toxin is produced by Clostridium Botulinium, an anaerobic Gram positive bacterium. Among all the types of botulinum toxin that are used, type A is the most widely used in therapeutic trials in humans, and has become the treatment of choice for multiple pathologies, such as blepharospasm, hemifacial spasm, cervical dystonia. and laryngeal dystonia. It also constitutes a therapeutic alternative in Stomatology, being applied in the treatment of oromandibular dystonia and in the management of facial pain. The present investigation deals with the knowledge and discussion of the use of botulinum toxin in the treatment of pain temporomandibular dysfunction, bruxism, orofacial dystonia, which can be treated interdisciplinarily as part of the orthodontic treatment plan. To this end, in the present study the main chemical characteristics of botulinum toxin, its mechanism of action and most important applications in the area of Stomatology were developed. The use of botulinum toxin, regardless of the specialty in which it has applications for a particular disorder, demands a thorough knowledge of the anatomy of the face and neck, the knowledge of the muscular action and the innervation of the different facial regions, which are fundamental to make a correct diagnosis and treatment. In the area of Orthodontics botulinum toxin is important because it has been shown in numerous investigations that in cases with slight vertical maxillary discrepancy, it contributes in the treatment of the gingival smile. Also in patients who require fixed orthodontic treatment and who developed bruxism, it contributes to improve muscle tone. In the treatment of temporomandibular dysfunction, has shown optimal results. That is why the importance of this study is to know the application of botulinum toxin as a therapeutic alternative in the management of conditions that can present the orthodontic patient and that demand an interdisciplinary attention
