    Bias Dependent Variability of Low Frequency Noise in Single Layer Graphene FETs

    Low-frequency noise (LFN) variability in graphene transistors (GFETs) is for the first time researched in this work. LFN from an adequate statistical sample of long-channel solution-gated single-layer GFETs is measured in a wide range of operating conditions while a physics-based analytical model is derived that accounts for the bias dependence of LFN variance with remarkable performance. It is theoretically proved and experimentally validated that LFN deviations in GFETs stem from physical mechanisms that generate LFN. Thus, carrier number DN due to trapping/detrapping process and mobility fluctuations Dm which are the main causes of LFN, define its variability likewise as its mean value. DN accounts for an M-shape of normalized LFN variance versus gate bias with a minimum at the charge neutrality point (CNP) as it was the case for normalized LFN mean value while Dm contributes only near the CNP for both variance and mean value. Trap statistical nature is experimentally shown to differ from classical Poisson distribution at silicon-oxide devices, and this is probably caused by electrolyte interface in GFETs under study. Overall, GFET technology development is still in a premature stage which might cause pivotal inconsistencies affecting the scaling laws in GFETs of the same process

    Low-frequency noise parameter extraction method for single layer graphene FETs

    In this paper, a detailed parameter extraction methodology is proposed for low-frequency noise (LFN) in single layer (SL) graphene transistors (GFETs) based on a recently established compact LFN model. Drain current and LFN of two short channel back-gated GFETs (L=300, 100 nm) were measured at lower and higher drain voltages, for a wide range of gate voltages covering the region away from charge neutrality point (CNP) up to CNP at p-type operation region. Current-voltage (IV) and LFN data were also available from a long channel SL top solution-gated (SG) GFET (L=5 um), for both p- and n-type regions near and away CNP. At each of these regimes, the appropriate IV and LFN parameters can be accurately extracted. Regarding LFN, mobility fluctuation effect is dominant at CNP and from there the Hooge parameter aH can be extracted while the carrier number fluctuation contribution which is responsible for the well-known M-shape bias dependence of output noise divided by squared drain current, also observed in our data, makes possible the extraction of the NT parameter related to the number of traps. In the less possible case of a Lambda-shape trend, NT and aH can be extracted simultaneously from the region near CNP. Away from CNP, contact resistance can have a significant contribution to LFN and from there the relevant parameter SDR^2 is defined. The LFN parameters described above can be estimated from the low drain voltage region of operation where the effect of Velocity Saturation (VS) mechanism is negligible. VS effect results in the reduction of LFN at higher drain voltages and from there the IV parameter hOmega which represents the phonon energy and is related to VS effect can be derived both from drain current and LFN data

    A Real-Time Tool Positioning Sensor for Machine-Tools

    In machining, natural oscillations, and elastic, gravitational or temperature deformations, are still a problem to guarantee the quality of fabricated parts. In this paper we present an optical measurement system designed to track and localize in 3D a reference retro-reflector close to the machine-tool's drill. The complete system and its components are described in detail. Several tests, some static (including impacts and rotations) and others dynamic (by executing linear and circular trajectories), were performed on two different machine tools. It has been integrated, for the first time, a laser tracking system into the position control loop of a machine-tool. Results indicate that oscillations and deformations close to the tool can be estimated with micrometric resolution and a bandwidth from 0 to more than 100 Hz. Therefore this sensor opens the possibility for on-line compensation of oscillations and deformations

    Off-Line Evaluation of Indoor Positioning Systems in Different Scenarios: The Experiences From IPIN 2020 Competition

    Every year, for ten years now, the IPIN competition has aimed at evaluating real-world indoor localisation systems by testing them in a realistic environment, with realistic movement, using the EvAAL framework. The competition provided a unique overview of the state-of-the-art of systems, technologies, and methods for indoor positioning and navigation purposes. Through fair comparison of the performance achieved by each system, the competition was able to identify the most promising approaches and to pinpoint the most critical working conditions. In 2020, the competition included 5 diverse off-site off-site Tracks, each resembling real use cases and challenges for indoor positioning. The results in terms of participation and accuracy of the proposed systems have been encouraging. The best performing competitors obtained a third quartile of error of 1 m for the Smartphone Track and 0.5 m for the Foot-mounted IMU Track. While not running on physical systems, but only as algorithms, these results represent impressive achievements

    Surgery After Neoadjuvant Stereotactic MRI Guided Adaptive Radiation in Pancreatic Cancer: Multi-institutional Toxicity and Survival Outcomes

    Background: Favorable toxicity and survival outcomes after dose escalated stereotactic MR guided adaptive radiation therapy (SMART) have been recently published for locally advanced (LA) and borderline resectable (BR) pancreatic cancer. Perioperative morbidity and mortality are not well understood after ablative radiation therapy, which may temper enthusiasm for offering surgery. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate survival and toxicity in resected pancreas cancer patients after neoadjuvant ablative SMART. Methods: In this IRB approved analysis, we retrospectively reviewed 33 consecutive patients with resectable, BR, and LA pancreatic cancer based on NCCN 2.2021 staging criteria who were treated at 2 institutions from 2017-2020 with neoadjuvant SMART 50 Gy in 5 fractions on a 0.35T MR Linac and later underwent definitive surgical resection. Overall survival (OS) and locoregional control (LRC) were evaluated by Kaplan-Meier method. Results: Median follow up was 22.4 months from diagnosis and 17.8 months from last day of RT. Most had BR (55%), otherwise initially resectable (33%) or LA (12%) pancreatic cancer. Median duration of induction chemotherapy was 3.5 (SD 1.6) months with most common regimens being FOLFIRINOX (74%), gemcitabine/abraxane (24%) and FOLFOX (3%). Performance status was ECOG 0, 1, 2 in 16 (48.5%), 12 (36.4%), and 5 (15.2%), respectively. Whipple was performed in 27 (82%) of patients, distal pancreatectomy in 4 (12%), and total pancreatectomy in 2 (6%). The median duration from SMART completion to surgery was 6.9 weeks (4.7-44.1). R0 resections were achieved in 28 (84.8%) of patients with the rest being R1, all in BR patients. Vascular resection/reconstruction was performed of the portal vein (PV) in 8 (24.2%) patients, SMV in 4 (12%), SMA in 1 (3%), and common hepatic artery in 2 (6%). Vascular resection/reconstruction was performed in all LA patients. Median OS, 1-year OS, and 2-year OS from diagnosis were 29.6 months, 93.8%, 81.5%, respectively. Median OS from RT was not yet reached; 1-year OS was 90.9%. LRC at 1 and 2 years was 97% and 93%, respectively. Radiation related acute and late grade 3+ gastrointestinal toxicity was seen in 2 (6%) and 2 (6%) patients. Post-op mortality at 30 and 90 days was seen 2 (6%) and 3 (9%) of patients with 1 death from GI bleed attributed to surgery and 1 death from hepatic ischemia related to PV resection. Conclusions: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report suggesting that surgery for pancreas cancer after dose escalated 5-fraction SMART is feasible. Further clarification is needed with respect to ideal patient selection and timing for surgery, the safety of arterial versus venous resection/reconstruction, and histopathologic response after delivery of ablative versus non-ablative radiation dose

    Evaluating indoor positioning systems in a shopping mall : the lessons learned from the IPIN 2018 competition

    The Indoor Positioning and Indoor Navigation (IPIN) conference holds an annual competition in which indoor localization systems from different research groups worldwide are evaluated empirically. The objective of this competition is to establish a systematic evaluation methodology with rigorous metrics both for real-time (on-site) and post-processing (off-site) situations, in a realistic environment unfamiliar to the prototype developers. For the IPIN 2018 conference, this competition was held on September 22nd, 2018, in Atlantis, a large shopping mall in Nantes (France). Four competition tracks (two on-site and two off-site) were designed. They consisted of several 1 km routes traversing several floors of the mall. Along these paths, 180 points were topographically surveyed with a 10 cm accuracy, to serve as ground truth landmarks, combining theodolite measurements, differential global navigation satellite system (GNSS) and 3D scanner systems. 34 teams effectively competed. The accuracy score corresponds to the third quartile (75th percentile) of an error metric that combines the horizontal positioning error and the floor detection. The best results for the on-site tracks showed an accuracy score of 11.70 m (Track 1) and 5.50 m (Track 2), while the best results for the off-site tracks showed an accuracy score of 0.90 m (Track 3) and 1.30 m (Track 4). These results showed that it is possible to obtain high accuracy indoor positioning solutions in large, realistic environments using wearable light-weight sensors without deploying any beacon. This paper describes the organization work of the tracks, analyzes the methodology used to quantify the results, reviews the lessons learned from the competition and discusses its future

    Early Tracheostomy for Managing ICU Capacity During the COVID-19 Outbreak: A Propensity-Matched Cohort Study

    10 p.Background: During the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, shortages of ventilators and ICU beds overwhelmed health care systems. Whether early tracheostomy reduces the duration of mechanical ventilation and ICU stay is controversial. Research question: Can failure-free day outcomes focused on ICU resources help to decide the optimal timing of tracheostomy in overburdened health care systems during viral epidemics? Study design and methods: This retrospective cohort study included consecutive patients with COVID-19 pneumonia who had undergone tracheostomy in 15 Spanish ICUs during the surge, when ICU occupancy modified clinician criteria to perform tracheostomy in Patients with COVID-19. We compared ventilator-free days at 28 and 60 days and ICU- and hospital bed-free days at 28 and 60 days in propensity score-matched cohorts who underwent tracheostomy at different timings (≤ 7 days, 8-10 days, and 11-14 days after intubation). Results: Of 1,939 patients admitted with COVID-19 pneumonia, 682 (35.2%) underwent tracheostomy, 382 (56%) within 14 days. Earlier tracheostomy was associated with more ventilator-free days at 28 days (≤ 7 days vs > 7 days [116 patients included in the analysis]: median, 9 days [interquartile range (IQR), 0-15 days] vs 3 days [IQR, 0-7 days]; difference between groups, 4.5 days; 95% CI, 2.3-6.7 days; 8-10 days vs > 10 days [222 patients analyzed]: 6 days [IQR, 0-10 days] vs 0 days [IQR, 0-6 days]; difference, 3.1 days; 95% CI, 1.7-4.5 days; 11-14 days vs > 14 days [318 patients analyzed]: 4 days [IQR, 0-9 days] vs 0 days [IQR, 0-2 days]; difference, 3 days; 95% CI, 2.1-3.9 days). Except hospital bed-free days at 28 days, all other end points were better with early tracheostomy. Interpretation: Optimal timing of tracheostomy may improve patient outcomes and may alleviate ICU capacity strain during the COVID-19 pandemic without increasing mortality. Tracheostomy within the first work on a ventilator in particular may improve ICU availability
