Geological structural features, such as the discontinuities that may be detected on satellite imagery as lineaments, in many cases control landslide occurrences. Lineament may represent the plane of weakness where the strength of the slope material has been reduced, eventually resulting in slope failure. The main objective of this study is to assess the relationship between lineament and landslide occurrences along the Simpang Pulai to Kg Raja highway, Malaysia. Lineament mapping was undertaken utilizing Landsat imagery and landslide distributions were identified based on field mapping and historical records. Lineament density maps of length, number and intersections were generated and compared with landslide distributions. The lineaments were also visually compared with the landslide occurrences. The results showed that there is an association between the lineaments and landslide distribution. Thus, lineament mapping is essential for the early stages of planning to prevent hazard potential from landslides

Investigations were conducted to determine the radionuclide concentration levels in the major rivers in Pahang state, Malaysia. Since the rivers are the main sources for water supply in the state, it is important to measure natural radionuclide concentrations in the rivers. Seventeen water samples were collected from major rivers in Pahang state. The concentration of uranium, thorium and potassium were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). The samples were found to contain permissible levels of radionuclides with a mean activity concentrations of uranium, thorium and potassium found to be 8.49 ± 0.34 mBq L-1, 1.74 ± 0.27 mBq L-1and 77.85 ± 0.96 mBq L-1respectively. The ratio between thorium and uranium concentration is found to be 3:4 due to the higher solubility of uranium than thorium in water. Radionuclide concentrations obtained were compared with the terrestrial gamma radiation dose rate measured around the area. A good relation was observed between uranium and thorium concentrations with gamma dose rate obtained around the area while no relation was found between the potassium concentrations with gamma dose rate. Significance of the results obtained is discussed

Over recent years, the imbalance between housing demand and supply, particularly in the high-cost housing segment, led to the rapid increase in the house prices. This paper has applied the standard theory of consumer demand and supply supplemented using content analysis method to explain the trend of housing demand and supply of housing market in Malaysia. Sampling in the quantitative content analysis is carried out to achieve the objective. Property Market Status Report in the NAPIC website provide a series data for total housing demand and supply for any house type of terrace, detached, cluster and townhouse in the price range between RM50,000 to RM300,000. All data provided cover from the first quarter until the fourth quarter across the year 2006 to 2015 specifically in Peninsular Malaysia only. Each level of the house price has a different equilibrium price so that developers can use it as an indicator based on the housing type. This research will promote ways to achieve the sustainabiliy in construction output overall so that the scholars can improve the equilibrium price model proposed in order to make the Malaysian housing become an affordable

A mathematical model for wastewater treatment process of an oxidation pond

    Get PDF
This study presents a mathematical model for wastewater treatment process (WWTP) of an oxidation pond. The model permits investigating the effects of a biological based product called mPHO on the degradation of contaminants as well as increase the amount of dissolved oxygen (DO) in the pond. At this aim, an ordinary differential equation with coupled equations has been developed to study the correlation between the amount of bacteria (phototrophic and Coliform), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and dissolved oxygen (DO) existing in the pond. The mathematical model is employed to simulate the behaviour of the system where the numerical results demonstrate that the proposed model gives a good approximation of the interaction processes that occur naturally between biological and chemical substances involved in the pond

A three competing species model for wastewater treatment: case study on Taman Timur oxidation pond, Johor Bahru

Oxidation pond techniques have practically proved to be effective for wastewater treatment process (WWTP) because of their low construction and operating cost. Cumbersome sampling is required to monitor the dynamics of the WWTP which also involves enormous costly work. Deterministic model accommodating the correlation between the amount of phototrophic bacteria in a product called mPHO (bioproduct used to improve water quality) and pollutant (bacteria E.coli and Coliform) existing in oxidation pond is developed to facilitate the analysis of this process. This study presents ordinary differential equation model for an oxidation pond to investigate the effect of mPHO on the degradation of pollutant. The model consists of a system of ordinary differential equations (ODE) with coupled reaction equations for the pollutant and phototrophic bacteria. The parameters of the model is estimated using the real data collected from an aerobic oxidation pond located in Taman Timor, Johor, Malaysia to illustrate a real life application of this model. The simulation results provide a better understanding of the ecological system in the oxidation pond

Model-free state feedback controller tuning for a liquid slosh suppression system

    Get PDF
This paper presents a model-free tuning of a data-driven pole placement state feedback controller for a liquid slosh suppression system. The optimum parameter gains of the state feedback controller are derived utilizing a set of initial input and output data recorded from the discrete-time system. To overcome the existence of the large steady state error when only the state feedback controller was applied, an integral control is added to compensate for such signal. The feasibility of proposed method is illustrated through numerical simulation by comparison with the conventional approach of designing the state feedback controller. The performance of system is investigated based on transient response positioning movement of the cart container, and the level of slosh reduction in the liquid
