    Finite Element Analysis of an Arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian Method for Stokes/Parabolic Moving Interface Problem With Jump Coefficients

    In this paper, a type of arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian (ALE) finite element method in the monolithic frame is developed for a linearized fluid–structure interaction (FSI) problem — an unsteady Stokes/parabolic interface problem with jump coefficients and moving interface, where, the corresponding mixed finite element approximation in both semi- and fully discrete scheme are developed and analyzed based upon one type of ALE formulation and a novel H1- projection technique associated with a moving interface problem, and the stability and optimal convergence properties in the energy norm are obtained for both discretizations to approximate the solution of a transient Stokes/parabolic interface problem that is equipped with a low regularity. Numerical experiments further validate all theoretical results. The developed analytical approaches and numerical implementations can be similarly extended to a realistic FSI problem in the future

    Quantum order by disorder in frustrated diamond lattice antiferromagnets

    We present a quantum theory of frustrated diamond lattice antiferromagnets. Considering quantum fluctuations as the predominant mechanism relieving spin frustration, we find a rich phase diagram comprising of six phases with coplanar spiral ordering in addition to the N\'eel phase. By computing the specific heat of these ordered phases, we obtain a remarkable agreement between (k,k,0)(k,k,0)-spiral ordering and the experimental specific heat data for the diamond lattice spinel compounds MnSc2_2S4_4, Co3_3O4_4 and CoRh2_2O4_4, i.e. specific heat data is a strong evidence for (k,k,0)(k,k,0)-spiral ordering in all of these materials. This prediction can be tested in future neutron scattering experiments on Co3_3O4_4 and CoRh2_2O4_4, and is consistent with existing neutron scattering data on MnSc2_2S4_4. Based on this agreement we infer a monotonically increasing relationship between frustration and the strength of quantum fluctuations.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, version published in PR

    Effect of Urbanization on the Adoption of Environmental Management Systems in Canadian Agriculture

    This study examines the extent to which farming practices have adjusted to the presence of urbanization in Canada. In particular, we compare the adoption rates for environmental management systems (EMSs) by farmers close to urbanized areas versus those in more rural, isolated regions. Using information from a national survey of 16,053 farmers, eight EMSs are considered. We find that farmers operating close to the urban milieu demonstrate strategic behavior by selecting more environmentally-friendly farm management practices to overcome social and regulatory pressures from such communities compared to those farmers that operate in rural communities.Farm Management,

    Robotic partial nephrectomy for posterior tumors through a retroperitoneal approach offers decreased length of stay compared with the transperitoneal approach: A propensity-matched analysis

    INTRODUCTION: We sought to compare surgical outcomes between transperitoneal and retroperitoneal robotic partial nephrectomy (RPN) for posterior tumors. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Using our multi-institutional RPN database, we reviewed 610 consecutive cases for posterior renal masses treated between 2007 and 2015. Primary outcomes were complications, operative time, length of stay (LOS), surgical margin status, and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) preservation. Secondary outcomes were estimated blood loss, warm ischemia time (WIT), disease recurrence, and disease-specific mortality. Due to significant differences in treatment year and tumor size between approaches, retroperitoneal cases were matched 1:4 to transperitoneal cases based on propensity scores using the greedy algorithm. Outcomes were compared between approaches using the chi-square and Mann-Whitney U tests. RESULTS: After matching, 296 transperitoneal and 74 retroperitoneal cases were available for analysis, and matched groups were well balanced in terms of treatment year, age, gender, race, American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status classification (ASA) score, body mass index, tumor laterality, tumor size, R.E.N.A.L. (radius, exophytic/endophytic properties, nearness of tumor to the collecting system or sinus, anterior/posterior, location relative to polar lines) score, and hilar location. Compared with transperitoneal, the retroperitoneal approach was associated with significantly shorter mean LOS (2.2 vs 2.6 days, p = 0.01), but longer mean WIT (21 vs 19 minutes, p = 0.01). Intraoperative (p = 0.35) and postoperative complications (p = 0.65), operative time (p = 0.93), positive margins (p = 1.0), and latest eGFR preservation (p = 0.25) were not significantly different between approaches. No differences were detected in the other outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: Among high-volume surgeons, transperitoneal and retroperitoneal RPN achieved similar outcomes for posterior renal masses, although with slight differences in LOS and WIT. Retroperitoneal RPN may be an effective option for the treatment of certain small posterior renal masses

    Laparoscopic Radical Trachelectomy

    Introduction: The standard treatment for patients with early-stage cervical cancer has been radical hysterectomy. However, for women interested in future fertility, radical trachelectomy is now considered a safe and feasible option. The use of minimally invasive surgical techniques to perform this procedure has recently been reported. Case Description: We report the first case of a laparoscopic radical trachelectomy performed in a developing country. The patient is a nulligravid, 30-y-old female with stage IB1 adenocarcinoma of the cervix who desired future fertility. She underwent a laparoscopic radical trachelectomy and bilateral pelvic lymph node dissection. The operative time was 340 min, and the estimated blood loss was 100mL. There were no intraoperative or postoperative complications. The final pathology showed no evidence of residual disease, and all pelvic lymph nodes were negative. At 20 mo of follow-up, the patient is having regular menses but has not yet attempted to become pregnant. There is no evidence of recurrence. Conclusion: Laparoscopic radical trachelectomy with pelvic lymphadenectomy in a young woman who desires future fertility may also be an alternative technique in the treatment of early cervical cancer in developing countries

    Thermoelectric effects in a strongly correlated model for Nax_xCoO2_2

    Thermal response functions of strongly correlated electron systems are of appreciable interest to the larger scientific community both theoretically and technologically. Here we focus on the infinitely correlated t-J model on a geometrically frustrated two-dimensional triangular lattice. Using exact diagonalization on a finite sized system we calculate the dynamical thermal response functions in order to determine the thermopower, Lorenz number, and dimensionless figure of merit. The dynamical thermal response functions is compared to the infinite frequency limit and shown to be very weak functions of frequency, hence, establishing the validity of the high frequency formalism recently proposed by Shastry for the thermopower, Lorenz number, and the dimensionless figure of merit. Further, the thermopower is demonstrated to have a low to mid temperature enhancement when the sign of the hopping parameter tt is switched from positive to negative for the geometrically frustrated lattice considered.Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, color version available at http://physics.ucsc.edu/~peterson/mrpeterson-condmat-NCO.pdf.     SN 2007gr: a Normal Type Ic Supernova with a Mildly Relativistic Radio Jet?

    A nearby type Ic supernova, SN 2007gr was observed with the EVN in two epochs 60 days apart (second observation also included the Green Bank Telescope). In both cases one of the EVN stations was the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT), which recorded the observational data not only in the VLBI mode, but also in its normal interferometric mode. Thus it provided an important reference observation. In the first epoch the fluxes measured by the VLBI network and the WSRT alone match well. However in the second epoch the peak brightness observed in the VLBI experiment is much lower than the total flux recorded by the WSRT. There could be multiple reasons for this discrepancy: a resolution effect, coherence losses in VLBI, or extended emission contaminating the WSRT measurement. With new WSRT observations we costrain the level of background emission and find that there is still a difference between the corrected total flux density and the VLBI peak brightness. If one assumes that this is dominated by resolution, this would correspond to an average apparent expansion speed of ~0.4c
