    Exactly solvable Ising--Heisenberg chain with triangular XXZ-Heisenberg plaquettes

    A mixed Ising-Heisenberg spin system consisting of triangular XXZ-Heisenberg spin clusters assembled into a chain by alternating with Ising spins interacting to all three spins in the triangle is considered. The exact solution of the model is given in terms of the generalized decoration--iteration map and within the transfer-matrix technique. Exact expressions for thermodynamic functions are derived. Ground state phase diagrams, thermodynamic and magnetic properties of the system are examined.Comment: 16 pages, 12 figure

This paper reviews the most prevalent loss functions and performance measurements in deep learning. We examine the benefits and limits of each technique and illustrate their application to various deep-learning problems.     A cooperative game approach to a production planning problem

    This paper deals with a production planning problem formulated as a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model that has a competition component, given that the manufacturers are willing to produce as much products as they can in order to fulfil the market’s needs. This corresponds to a typical game theoretic problem applied to the productive sector, where a global optimization problem involves production planning in order to maximize the utilities for the different firms that manufacture the same type of products and compete in the market. This problem has been approached as a cooperative game, which involves a possible cooperation scheme among the manufacturers. The general problem was approached by Owen (1995) as the “production game” and the core was considered. This paper identifies the cooperative game theoretic model for the production planning MILP optimization problem and Shapley Value was chosen as the solution approach. The results obtained indicate the importance of cooperating among competitors. Moreover, this leads to economic strategies for small manufacturing companies that wish to survive in a competitive environment

    Increased MAPK1/3 Phosphorylation in Luminal Breast Cancer Related with PIK3CA Hotspot Mutations and Prognosis

    INTRODUCTION: While mutations in PIK3CA are most frequently (45%) detected in luminal breast cancer, downstream PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway activation is predominantly observed in the basal subtype. The aim was to identify proteins activated in PIK3CA mutated luminal breast cancer and the clinical relevance of such a protein in breast cancer patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Expression levels of 171 signaling pathway (phospho-)proteins established by The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) using reverse phase protein arrays (RPPA) were in silico examined in 361 breast cancers for their relation with PIK3CA status. MAPK1/3 phosphorylation was evaluated with immunohistochemistry on tissue microarrays (TMA) containing 721 primary breast cancer core biopsies to explore the relationship with metastasis-free survival. RESULTS: In silico analyses revealed increased phosphorylation of MAPK1/3, p38 and YAP, and decreased expression of p70S6K and 4E–BP1 in PIK3CA mutated compared to wild-type luminal breast cancer. Augmented MAPK1/3 phosphorylation was most significant, i.e. in luminal A for both PIK3CA exon 9 and 20 mutations and in luminal B for exon 9 mutations. In 290 adjuvant systemic therapy naïve lymph node negative (LNN) breast cancer patients with luminal cancer, high MAPK phosphorylation in nuclei (HR = 0.49; 95% CI, 0.25–0.95; P =.036) and in tumor cells (HR = 0.37; 95% CI, 0.18–0.79; P =.010) was related with favorable metastasis-free survival in multivariate analyses including traditional prognostic factors. CONCLUSION: Enhanced MAPK1/3 phosphorylation in luminal breast cancer is related to PIK3CA exon-specific mutations and correlated with favorable prognosis especially when located in the nuclei of tumor cells

    Cooperation in clusters: A study case in the furniture industry in Colombia

    Cooperation is increasingly been used in the industrial sector because of its benefits. This have motivated companies to establish alliances and agreements with others in order to reduce cost or access new markets, for example. In the literature, we could find many works aimed at cooperation in supply chains. A smaller amount was focused at cluster cooperation and few of them propose methodologies or models to facilitate the development and implementation of cooperation in industrial clusters. This paper provides a methodology for cooperation in clusters, which was applied to the furniture industry of AtlĂĄntico region in Colombia. Shapley value was used in order to evaluate the different coalitions and to split the benefits obtained with these coalitions. The methodology is useful for cluster members in order to encourage the formation of alliances within the cluster in order to overcome the prevailing mistrust, strengthening the cluster and gaining competitiveness

    Fabrication of Metal and Alloy Components by Additive Manufacturing: Examples of 3D Materials Science

    ObjectiveThis paper provides a brief review of relatively new additive manufacturing technologies for the fabrication of unusual and complex metal and alloy products by laser and electron beam melting. A number of process features and product microstructures are illustrated utilizing 3D optical and transmission electron microscope image compositions representing examples of 3D materials science.MethodsProcessing methods involving electron beam melting (EBM) and a process referred to as direct metal laser sintering (DMLS), often called selective laser melting (SLM) are described along with the use of light (optical) microscopy (OM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) to elucidate microstructural phenomena.ResultsExamples of EBM and SLM studies are presented in 3D image compositions. These include EBM of Ti-6Al-4V, Cu, Co-base superalloy and Inconel 625; and SLM of 17-4 PH stainless steel, Inconel 718 and Inconel 625.Conclusions3D image compositions constituting 3D materials science provide effective visualization for directional solidification-related phenomena associated with the EBM and SLM fabrication of a range of metals and alloys, especially microstructures and microstructural architectures

    Improved Orbital Parameters and Transit Monitoring for HD 156846b

    HD 156846b is a Jovian planet in a highly eccentric orbit (e = 0.85) with a period of 359.55 days. The pericenter passage at a distance of 0.16 AU is nearly aligned to our line of sight, offering an enhanced transit probability of 5.4% and a potentially rich probe of the dynamics of a cool planetary atmosphere impulsively heated during close approach to a bright star (V = 6.5). We present new radial velocity (RV) and photometric measurements of this star as part of the Transit Ephemeris Refinement and Monitoring Survey (TERMS). The RV measurements from Keck-HIRES reduce the predicted transit time uncertainty to 20 minutes, an order of magnitude improvement over the ephemeris from the discovery paper. We photometrically monitored a predicted transit window under relatively poor photometric conditions, from which our non-detection does not rule out a transiting geometry.     Development and validation of vulnerable and enabling indices for hiv viral suppression among people with hiv enrolled in the ryan white program

    Background: Numerous factors impact HIV care, often requiring consideration of indices to prevent collinearity when using statistical modeling. Using the Behavioral Model for Vulnerable Populations, we developed vulnerable and enabling indices for people living with HIV (PLWH). Methods: We used Ryan White Program (RWP) data and principal component analysis to develop general and gender-and racial/ethnic-specific indices. We assessed internal reliability (Cronbach’s alpha), convergent validity (correlation coefficient), and predictive utility (logistic regression) with non-viral suppression. Results: Three general factors accounting for 79.2% of indicators’ variability surfaced: mental health, drug use, and socioeconomic status (Cronbach’s alpha 0.68). Among the overall RWP population, indices showed convergent validity and predictive utility. Using gender-or racial/ethnic-specific indices did not improve psychometric performance. Discussion: General mental health, drug use, and socioeconomic indices using administrative data showed acceptable reliability, validity, and utility for non-viral suppression in an overall PLWH population and in gender-and racial/ethnic-stratified populations. These general indices may be used with similar validity and utility across gender and racial/ethnic diverse populations

    Administrators in higher education: organizational expansion in a transforming institution

    Recent European research has revealed growth in the number of administrators and professionals across different sections of universities—a long established trend in US universities. We build on this research by investigating the factors associated with variation in the proportion of administrators across 761 Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in 11 European countries. We argue that the enactment of expanded and diversified missions of HE is one of the main factors nurturing universities’ profesional and administrative bodies. Our findings support such an assertion; regardless of geographical and institutional differences, HEIs with high levels of “entrepreneurialism” (e.g. in service provision and external engagement) are characterized by a larger proportion of administrative staff. However, we find no empirical support for arguments citing structural pressures and demands on HEIs due to higher student enrolments, budget cuts or deregulation as engines driving such change. Instead, our results point towards, as argued by neo-institutionalists, the diffusion of formal organization as a model of institutional identity and purpose, which is especially prevalent at high levels of external connectedness

    Nasalization by Nasalis larvatus: larger noses audiovisually advertise conspecifics in proboscis monkeys

    Male proboscis monkeys have uniquely enlarged noses that are prominent adornments, which may have evolved through their sexually competitive harem group social system. Nevertheless, the ecological roles of the signals encoded by enlarged noses remain unclear. We found significant correlations among nose, body, and testis sizes and a clear link between nose size and number of harem females. Therefore, there is evidence supporting both male-male competition and female choice as causal factors in the evolution of enlarged male noses. We also observed that nasal enlargement systematically modifies the resonance properties of male vocalizations, which probably encode male quality. Our results indicate that the audiovisual contributions of enlarged male noses serve as advertisements to females in their mate selection. This is the first primate research to evaluate the evolutionary processes involved in linking morphology, acoustics, and socioecology with unique masculine characteristics
