Given that local natural building stone in our region, Galicia (North West of Spain) is granite, our interest was focused on the response of this stone type to laser cleaning. The aim of this work is to determine the change in colour as index of the response of galician granites to UV-Nd:YAG laser exposure. For this purpose samples of commercial granites from different quarries were irradiated at increasing fluences. Colour changes were determined through the analysis of digital images and expressed in the L*a*b* and L*h*C* colour models. The results enable the establishment of application limits of laser cleaning to these material

    Biospeckle Activity Evolution of Strawberries

In this work, we measured the biospeckle activity of strawberries (fragaria × ananassa) with two recently developed algorithms. We observed an important diminution of speckle activity within time periods of 72 h. We tested the methods by analyzing different specimens to check for proper detection of bruised areas or fungal development. The obtained results serve as a starting point to correlate the time evolution of biospeckle activity with aging of fruits, in order to set the basis for development of future standardized fruit quality control procedures.Fil: Mulone, Cecilia. Considerations on the programmed functional life (one generation) of a green artificial reef in terms of the sustainability of the modified ecosystem

    Get PDF
[Abstract] The installation of artificial reefs serves to enhance marine ecosystems, although it also modifies them. These changes do not have to be irreversible, since it is possible to treat the functional life of an artificial reef (AR) as a variable factor to be determined, with the objective of contributing to the sustainability of the ecosystem. The quest for sustainability does not end with the manufacture and installation of the AR units. It is also necessary to analyse the sustainability of the modified ecosystem, through the production of services. This leads to consider the medium-term return of the ecosystem to its initial state, once the functional life of the ARs expires. This paper presents and justifies an AR design/composition for limited functional life. It is the result of acting on the base material, the concrete, with the objective of limiting the useful life to one social generation. Four different dosages were proposed for such a purpose. They were subjected to mechanical tests (compressive strength and absorption after immersion), including an innovative abrasion-resistant one. The results allow estimating the functional life of the four types of concrete from the design variables (density, compactness, and quantity of water and cement as well as its relation). To this end linear regression models and clustering techniques were applied. The described procedure leads to an AR design for limited functional life. The authors gratefully acknowledge the financial support from the regional government of Galicia, Xunta de Galicia, through the project CN-10MMA003CT. The mitochondrial inhibitor oligomycin induces an inflammatory response in the rat knee joint

    Get PDF
[Abstract] Background. Recent findings support a connection between mitochondrial dysfunction and activation of inflammatory pathways in articular cells. This study investigates in vivo in an acute model whether intra-articular administration of oligomycin, an inhibitor of mitochondrial function, induces an oxidative and inflammatory response in rat knee joints. Methods. Oligomycin was injected into the rat left knee joint on days 0, 2, and 5 before joint tissues were obtained on day 6. The right knee joint served as control. Results were evaluated by macroscopy and histopathology and by measuring cellular and mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS), 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal (4-HNE, a marker of lipid peroxidation), nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), and CD68 (macrophages) and chemokine levels. The marker of mitochondrial mass COX-IV was also evaluated. Results. The macroscopic findings showed significantly greater swelling in oligomycin-injected knees than in control knees. Likewise, the histological score of synovial damage was also increased significantly. Immunohistochemical studies showed high expression of IL-8, coinciding with a marked infiltration of polymorphonuclears and CD68+ cells in the synovium. Mitochondrial mass was increased in the synovium of oligomycin-injected joints, as well as cellular and mitochondrial ROS production, and 4-HNE. Relatedly, expression of the oxidative stress-related transcription factor Nrf2 was also increased. As expected, no histological differences were observed in the cartilage; however, cytokine-induced neutrophil chemoattractant-1 mRNA and protein expression were up-regulated in this tissue. Conclusions. Mitochondrial failure in the joint is able to reproduce the oxidative and inflammatory status observed in arthritic joints.Instituto de Salud Carlos III; 09/02340Instituto de Salud Carlos III, RD12/0009/0018, RIERGalicia. Compositional depth profiles of gilded wood polychromes by means of LIBS

    No full text
The variety of techniques applied in gilded ornamentation and the possible existence of products of previous interventions make difficult the restoration process of these artworks which frequently include the removal of a brass-based paint (purpurin) added to cover the lack of gold leaf. The aim of this work is the characterization by means of LIBS of the different layers in gilded wood polychromes. For this purpose small pieces taken from two baroque altarpieces were analyzed using a Nd:YAG laser source operating at the wavelength of 355 nm to obtain characteristic LIBS spectra and compositional depth profiles.Xunta de Galicia; PGIDIT06CCP00901C
