    Does Fundus Fluorescein Angiography Procedure Affect Ocular Pulse Amplitude?

    Purpose. This study examines the effects of fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA) procedure on ocular pulse amplitude (OPA) and intraocular pressure (IOP). Materials and Methods. Sixty eyes of 30 nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy patients (15 males, 15 females) were included in this cross-sectional case series. IOP and OPA were measured with the Pascal dynamic contour tonometer before and after 5 minutes of intravenous fluorescein dye injection. Results. Pre-FFA mean OPA value was  mmHg and post-FFA mean OPA value was  mmHg (). Pre-FFA mean IOP value was  mmHg and post-FFA mean IOP value was  mmHg (). Conclusion. Although both mean OPA and IOP values were decreased after FFA procedure, the difference was not statistically significant.     Genetic Polymorphism Of Manganese Superoxide Dismutase In Behcet'S Disease

    Objectives: This study aims to investigate the genetic association between single nucleotide mutation in mitochondrial manganese superoxide dismutase and a Behcet's disease (BD) population by using molecular techniques. Patients and methods: Ninety-three BD patients (45 males, 48 females; mean age 33.15 +/- 8.99 years; range 17 to 65 years) and 125 controls (58 males, 67 females; mean age 28.33 +/- 7.31 years; range 18 to 62 years) were genotyped by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism method. The genotypic distributions in BD patients and controls were consistent with the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Results: Significant differences were observed between BD patients and controls in terms of genotypic distribution. Frequencies of alanine (Ala)/Ala, Ala/valine (Val), and Val/Val were 14.0% (n=13), 45.2% (n=42), and 40.9% (n=38) in BD patients and 21.6% (n=27), 53.6% (n=67), and 24.8% (n=31) in controls, respectively (p=0.033). Conclusion: The Val/Val genotype of the manganese superoxide dismutase gene is associated with the physiopathology of BD in a group of Turkish patients.Wo

    The functional role of the pulvinar in discriminating between objective and subjective cognitive impairment in major depressive disorder.

    INTRODUCTION Emotionally driven cognitive complaints represent a major diagnostic challenge for clinicians and indicate the importance of objective confirmation of the accuracy of depressive patients' descriptions of their cognitive symptoms. METHODS We compared cognitive status and structural and functional brain connectivity changes in the pulvinar and hippocampus between patients with total depression and healthy controls. The depressive group was also classified as "amnestic" or "nonamnestic," based on the members' subjective reports concerning their forgetfulness. We then sought to determine whether these patients would differ in terms of objective neuroimaging and cognitive findings. RESULTS The right pulvinar exhibited altered connectivity in individuals with depression with objective cognitive impairment, a finding which was not apparent in depressive patients with subjective cognitive impairment. DISCUSSION The pulvinar may play a role in depression-related cognitive impairments. Connectivity network changes may differ between objective and subjective cognitive impairment in depression and may play a role in the increased risk of dementia in patients with depression

    Corneal melanosis successfully treated using topical mitomycin-C and alcohol corneal epitheliectomy: a 3-year follow-up case report

    We report a case of primary acquired corneal melanosis without atypia associated with corneal haze in a patient with a history of limbal malignant melanoma and the effect of mitomycin-C. A 75-year-old woman with a history of limbal malignant melanoma presented with loss of vision in right eye. Corneal examination showed a patchy melanotic pigmentation with a central haze. Topical mitomycin-C improved visual acuity and corneal haze. However, the pigmented lesions persisted, and they were removed with alcohol corneal epitheliectomy. Histopathological examination demonstrated primary acquired melanosis without atypia. The lesions were successfully removed, and there were no recurrences during the follow-up period of 36 months. The association of conjunctival and corneal melanosis without atypia is a rare condition. In addition, co-existence of central corneal haze and melanosis may decrease visual acuity. Topical mitomycin-C and alcohol corneal epitheliectomy can be useful treatments in this condition
