    Expectations of emerging adults about conjugality and parenthood

    In modern societies the life course up to the point of marriage and having children is not as linear as it was in the past. For this reason, this study aimed to analyse the factors that may influence the expectations of emerging adults on conjugality and parenthood, such as academic ambition, family typology, and religion. This is an exploratory research, with qualitative design, in which 18 emerging adults living in Portugal participated in individual semi-structured interviews. Thematic analysis suggests that emerging adults perceive personal over external factors as having greater impact on what they expect of conjugality and parenthood. The current study also highlights a general preference for marriage as opposed to cohabitation, and points to a tendency, on the part of religious emerging adults, to prefer to marry through the church. The findings of this study may contribute to better interventions in different contexts with emerging adults, and may have expanded the knowledge about what their main concerns are, regarding the constitution of a family.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    The predictive value of dyadic coping in the explanation of PTSD symptoms and subjective well-being of work accident victims

    Objective: Work accidents may be considered dyadic stressors in so far as they not only affect the worker, but also the couple's relationship. Dyadic coping, as the process by which couples manage the stress experienced by each partner, can strengthen individual health and well-being as well as couple relationship functioning. Accidents at work have progressively been studied from a perspective that focuses on their negative effects on PTSS, anxiety, and depression. However, to a large extent, the dyadic coping processes and results following a work accident are still to be identified and clarified. In this study, we examined the predictive value of dyadic coping in the explanation of PTSS and subjective well-being of work accident victims. Method: This study comprised a sample of 62 individuals involved in work accidents within the last 24 months (61.3% males) and their partners (N = 124; M = 46.25 years, SD = 11.18). All participants responded to the Dyadic Coping Inventory and the work accident victims also answered the PTSD Checklist - Civilian (PCL-C) and the Mental Health Continuum - Short Form (MHC-SF). Two hierarchical multiple regression analyses were performed using two different variable set models: Model 1 comprised the control variables gender and age, and Model 2 included the workers' and the partners' dyadic coping variables. Results: Results showed that dyadic coping reported by both workers and their respective partners (Model 2) was a significant predictor of workers' PTSS (p < 0.01) and subjective well-being (p < 0.001), explaining 31.2% of the variance in PCL-C and 68.7% in MHC-SF results. More specifically, the partners' supportive dyadic coping (by the self) and delegated dyadic coping (by the partner) were significant predictors of the workers' lower PTSS and virtually all the dyadic copying strategies of both the workers' and their partners' were significant predictors of the workers' higher subjective well-being. Conclusion: Dyadic coping of both the workers and their partners predicts the workers' PTSS and subjective well-being.     Tese de doutoramento, Psicologia (Psicologia da Educação), Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de Psicologia, 2015The central theme in this dissertation consists of a number of psychosocial variables which have a potential impact on the personal and relational well-being of individuals in a couple relationship. Considering that a successful couple relationship is a significant component of most individuals' life plans, the main goal of this thesis was to expand the knowledge on the promotion of optimal dyadic functioning, from a proactive perspective, deeming the latter as intrinsically important, and not merely an adjunct to disturbance and rupture prevention. Considering a vast body of scientific research and literature on the effects of family stability versus family fragmentation, a growing public and private interest has emerged in other countries, particularly over the last decade, in helping couples construct and maintain strong and healthy conjugal relationships. Such is not the case in Portugal, hence, through an innovative approach, we set out to identify a set of pro-relationship processes and to enable the development of a marriage education program, as a theoretical and empirically based intervention. The conceptual perspectives of Marriage Education and Positive Psychology underlie the seven empirical studies presented herein, and the final proposal of a range of guidelines regarding proactive and preventive intervention with couples. By means of a mixed exploratory approach (document analysis, qualitative and quantitative data) and based on the perspectives of both married and cohabiting individuals, the main focus of analysis was on conjugal relationships in their first ten years, precisely those considered to be the most difficult and demanding years in love committed relationships. The results highlight several dimensions that are relevant to couples’ relational experience, which are consistent with existing research, but also innovative in some cases. Commitment, conjugal prospective coping (as a way of coping based on resourcefulness, responsibility and vision regarding the relationship), savoring strategies (as emotion regulation processes moderating the effect of positive events on positive feelings) and dyadic coping (referring to the interplay between the stress signals of one partner and the coping reactions of the other) may be deemed important dimensions within the couplehood context.     Tese de mestrado em Psicologia (Stress e Bem-Estar: intervenção na família, na escola e no trabalho), apresentada à Universidade de Lisboa através da Faculdade de Psicologia e de Ciências da Educação, 2008Enquadrados pelo Modelo Ecológico de Desenvolvimento Humano (Bronfenbrenner, 1979, 2000) e partindo da Teoria da Vinculação (Bowlby, 1969, 1980), alargada a todo o ciclo de vida, quisemos compreender as relações entre a vinculação aos pais, a vinculação aos pares, o suporte social percebido e os níveis de bem-estar psicológico e subjectivo numa população de jovens adultos. A amostra é constituída por 200 sujeitos com idades entre 18 e 25 anos de ambos os sexos. Os instrumentos utilizados são: Questionário de Vinculação ao Pai e à Mãe (versão revista; Matos & Costa, 2001), Escala de Vinculação do Adulto (Canavarro, 1995), Escala de Provisões Sociais (Moreira, 1996), Escala de Bem-estar Psicológico (Novo, Duarte Silva & Peralta, 2004), Escala de Satisfação com a Vida (Diener et al, 1985; Neto, 1993) e Inventário de Afectividade Positiva e Negativa (Moreira, 1998). Todos os instrumentos se encontravam, à partida, devidamente estudados e adaptados para a população portuguesa, tendo os resultados provenientes da análise da sua fiabilidade na presente investigação (alphas de Cronbach, correlações inter-itens e item-total) oferecido garantias para a utilização dos dados. Os resultados indicam que a dimensão da inibição da exploração e individualidade é, relativamente a ambos os progenitores, a que mais fortemente se relaciona com o estabelecimento da vinculação na idade adulta. Observamos correlações, embora baixas, da qualidade do laço emocional à Mãe com as dimensões positivas da vinculação adulta, assim como da vinculação a ambos os pais (com excepção para a ansiedade de separação e dependência) com a percepção do suporte social. Esta correlaciona-se negativamente com uma vinculação ansiosa aos pares. The sample consisted in 200 subjects aged from 18 to 25 years old from both genders. The instruments used were: Questionário de Vinculação ao Paie à Mãe The Father/Mother Attachment Questionnaire (revised version; Matos & Costa,2001), Escala de Vinculação do Adulto Adult Attachment Scale (Canavarro, 2005), Escala de Provisões Sociais Social Provisions Scale (Moreira, 1996), Escala de Bem-estar Psicológico Psychological Well-Being Scale (Novo, Duarte Silva & Peralta), Escala de Satisfação com a Vida Satisfaction With Life Scale (Diener et al, 1985; Neto, 1993) and Inventário de Afectividade Positiva e Negativa Positive and Negative Affect Inventory (Moreira, 1998). All instruments had been studied and are adapted to the Portuguese population, having the outcomes of the assessment of their reliability in the present investigation (Cronbach's alphas, inter items and item-total correlations) offered guarantees for the use of the obtained data. The results evidenced that individuality and exploration inhibition is, in both parents, the most strongly related with the establishment of attachment in adulthood. We observed positive correlations, although small, between quality of the emotional bond to the mother and the positive dimensions of adult attachment as well as between attachment to both parents (with the exception of separation anxiety and dependency) and social support perception.     Esta investigação tem como objectivo analisar a influência das características centrais do trabalho na satisfação com as recompensas em dois momentos temporais distintos, distanciados cerca de uma década, na mesma organização. Participaram no estudo 258 indivíduos em 1996, e 142 em 2007. Estes indivíduos responderam a um mesmo questionário aplicado na mesma organização pública de prestação de serviços.Em1996, a variedade do trabalho e o feedback das chefias tinhamumefeito directo e positivo estatisticamente significativo na predição da satisfação com as recompensas, e o significado do trabalho tinha um efeito negativo. No segundo momento de análise, cerca de 10 anos depois, somente o feedback das chefias teve umefeito directo, positivo e estatisticamente significativo.Umavez que as práticas de liderança têm impacto na satisfação com as recompensas dos colaboradores, sugere- se que, para além das políticas de recompensas, sejam desenvolvidos planos de formação para as chefias sobre feedback, fomentando uma comunicação mais eficaz entre a chefia e o colaborador.The objective of this research is to analyse the influence of the key characteristics of work on satisfaction with the rewards, at two distinct points in time - around a decade apart - in the same organisation. There were 258 participants in the study in 1996 and 142 in 2007; they completed the same questionnaire in the same public organisation, which acted as a service-provider. In 1996, variety in the work and the feedback from superiors had a statistically significant direct and positive effect on prediction of the contentment with rewards and the significance of thework had a negative effect. At the second point of analysis, around 10 years later, only the feedback from superiors had a statistically significant, direct and positive effect. Since leadership practices have an impact onworker contentment with rewards, it is suggested that, besides remuneration policies, plans be drawn up to provide managers with training on feedback, to increase effective communication between supervisors and workers.Cette recherche a pour objectif d’analyser l’influence des caractéristiques centrales du travail dans la satisfaction avec les récompenses à deux moments différents, espacés de dix ans, au sein de la même organisation. Ont participé à cette étude 258 personnes en 1996 et 142 en 2007, qui ont répondu à un même questionnaire appliqué au sein de la même organisation publique de prestation de services. En 1996, la variété du travail et le feedback de la hiérarchie avaient un effet direct et positif statistiquement significatif dans la prédiction de la satisfaction avec les récompenses, et la signification du travail avait un effet négatif. Dans le deuxième temps d’analyse, près de 10 ans après, seul le feedback de la hiérarchie a eu un effet direct positif et statistiquement significatif. Dans la mesure où les pratiques de leadership ont un impact sur la satisfaction avec les récompenses des collaborateurs, est suggérée, au delà des politiques de récompenses, la mise en place de plans de formation pour les supérieurs hiérarchiques sur le feedback, afin d’augmenter l’éficacité de leur communication avec les collaborateurs.Esta investigación tiene como objetivo analizar la influencia de las características centrales del trabajo en la satisfacción con las recompensas en dos momentos temporalmente distintos, con un distanciamiento aproximadamente de una década, en la misma organización. Participaron en el estudio 258 individuos en 1996 y 142 en 2007, respondiendo a un mismo cuestionario aplicado en la misma organización pública de prestación de servicios. En 1996 la variedad del trabajo y la retroalimentación de las jefaturas tenían un efecto directo y positivo estadísticamente significativo en la predicción del grado de satisfacción con las recompensas, y el significado del trabajo tenía un efecto negativo. En el segundo análisis, cerca de 10 años después, solamente la retroalimentación de las jefaturas tuvo un efecto directo, positivo y estadísticamente significativo. Ya que las prácticas de liderazgo tienen impacto en la satisfacción con las recompensas de los colaboradores, se sugiere, además de las políticas de recompensas, el desarrollo de planes de formación para las jefaturas sobre retroalimentación, fomentando una comunicación más efectiva entre la jefatura y el colaborador

    Pretende-se compreender como os jovens reportam a utilização de meios tecnológicos e conhecer a perceção que encarregados de educação e professores têm acerca dessa utilização. Propôs-se perceber se estes monitorizam a utilização que os jovens fazem dos meios tecnológicos e que práticas de sensibilização utilizam. Foram aplicados o Inventário de Incidentes Observados de Cyberbullying a 269 adolescentes e o Inventário sobre Segurança Online e Cyberbullying a 155 encarregados de educação e 28 professores. Evidenciam-se diferenças significativas entre a utilização reportada pelos alunos e as perceções dos encarregados de educação e professores

    Capacity program of teachers in professional pedagogy for student-centred teaching and learning and strengthening links between polytechnic higher education and companies: Working group report

    This document reports the objectives, contents, activities, methods, and recommendations related to Task 3.4 of the InovEAP project, entitled "Capacity Program for Teachers in Professional Pedagogy for Student-Centred Teaching and Learning and Strengthening Links Between Polytechnic Higher Education and Project Companies". As later detailed, the presented activities occurred between March 2022 and September 2023. The report briefly contextualises this project task and its objectives, reflecting on the training needs of Polytechnic University of Beja (IPBeja) teachers concerning skills in the scope of active and innovative methodologies. JAMK, the University of Applied Sciences, in Jyväskylä, Finland, was the reference institution that provided the IPBeja teachers participating in this project task with training in the areas above. This report gives an account of the teachers' journey regarding contents and methods studied and applied in the capacity program of the project, along with three workshops on IPBeja premises and the observed practices at the JAMK. The report also emphasises the significant impact of the concrete recommendations for IPBeja as a higher education institution and the potential to improve relationships with local, national, and international stakeholders. Finally, the report includes a program for disseminating these practices and proposals in IPBeja as an additional step to involve all IPBeja communities in these dynamics. As the first edition was already conducted, a brief report is also presented
