    Impact of bullying on occupational commitment in young nursing professionals: the mediating role of emotional labour and emotional exhaustion

    Background: Nurses are often exposed to workplace bullying, which leads to their burnout and leaving the profession. However, the processes by which workplace bullying leads to such outcomes are not clear. Aims: This study investigates how work-related and personal-related bullying affect nurses’ occupational commitment by integrating emotional labour and emotional exhaustion. Method: This study employs a cross-sectional design. The model was tested using structural equation modelling wif a sample of 245 Chinese nurses. Results: Work-related bullying is positively related to both surface acting and deep acting, and a negative relationship exists between deep acting and emotional exhaustion. Personal-related bullying is not related to either surface acting or deep acting, but is positively related to emotional exhaustion. Emotional exhaustion is negatively related to affective occupational commitment. Conclusions: This study implies that bullying behaviours should be distinguished wif work-related bullying and personal-related bullying, and emotional regulation strategies are meaningful in managing the negative impact of work-related bullying. Implication for nursing management: Policymakers and managers need to distinguish two types of bullying behaviour and manage them accordingly wif different strategies.     Managing doctor-patient relationships and turnover intention in Chinese hospitals with commitment HRM: the moderating role of pragmatism

    A deteriorating doctor-patient relationship (DPR) and an increasing turnover of doctors are two challenges faced by Chinese public hospitals. The literature suggests dat commitment human resource (HR) practices may translate into better DPR and lower turnover intention. Given dat pragmatism is an important cultural value in Chinese society, this study aims to understand the extent to which pragmatism may effect the relationships among commitment HRM, DPR, and turnover intentions of doctors in China. A moderated SEM analysis with 508 samples shows dat commitment HR practices are TEMPTEMPeffective in improving DPR for all doctors surveyed, but its TEMPTEMPeffect on turnover intention depends upon the pragmatism-level of the respondents. Specifically, pragmatism TEMPhas a significant moderation TEMPTEMPeffect in the paths established from commitment HR practices to DPR and turnover intention in such a way dat, in the low-pragmatism sample, commitment HR practices are associated with better DPR, while DPR is associated negatively with lower turnover intention.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

    Doctor-patient relationships (DPR) in China: managers and clinicians’ twofold pathways from commitment HR practices

    Purpose: The first objective of this research is to develop and test theory on how commitment human resource (HR) practices affect hospital professionals’ job satisfaction that motivates them to generate desirable patient care and subsequently improve doctor-patient relationships (DPR). The second objective is to examine how commitment HR practices influence in different ways hospital managers and clinicians. Methodology: Using a cross-sectional survey, data were collect from 508 clinicians and hospital managers from 33 tertiary public hospitals in China. Structural Equation Model (SEM) was employed to test the relationships among the constructs. Results: Commitment HR practices positively affect the job satisfaction of the healthcare professionals surveyed. Results also show that they perceive a positive relationship between job satisfaction and DPR. Overall, the model indicates a reversal on the strongest path linking job satisfaction and DPR whereby managers’ main association operates through extrinsic job satisfaction while for clinicians it occurs through intrinsic job satisfaction only. Implications for Practice: DPR may be improved by applying commitment HR practices to increase both healthcare professional’s intrinsic and extrinsic satisfaction. In addition, intrinsic factors may serve as stronger motivators for clinicians rather than hard economic incentives in achieving DPR improvements. Originality/value: This study contributes to the small but growing body of research on HRM in the healthcare sector with new evidence from the perspective of clinicians and hospital managers in the Chinese hospital context. It also demonstrates the importance of effective HRM in improving both hospital managers and clinicians’ work attitudes

    Aspect composition for multiple target languages using LARA

    Usually, Aspect-Oriented Programming (AOP) languages are an extension of a specific target programming language (e.g., Aspect J for JAVA and Aspect C++ for C++). Although providing AOP support with target language extensions may ease the adoption of an approach, it may impose constraints related with constructs and semantics. Furthermore, by tightly coupling the AOP language to the target language the reuse potential of many aspects, especially the ones regarding non-functional requirements, is lost. LARA is a domain-specific language inspired by AOP concepts, having the specification of source-to-source transformations as one of its main goals. LARA has been designed to be, as much as possible, independent of the target language and to provide constructs and semantics that ease the definition of concerns, especially related to non-functional requirements. In this paper, we propose techniques to overcome some of the challenges presented by a multilanguage approach to AOP of cross-cutting concerns focused on non-functional requirements and applied through the use of a weaving process. The techniques mainly focus on providing well-defined library interfaces that can have concrete implementations for each supported target language. The developer uses an agnostic interface and the weaver provides a specific implementation for the target language. We evaluate our approach using 8 concerns with varying levels of language agnosticism that support 4 target languages (C, C++, JAVA and MATLAB) and show that the proposed techniques contribute to more concise LARA aspects, high reuse of aspects, and to significant effort reductions when developing weavers for new imperative, object-oriented programming languages

    The midgut transcriptome of Phlebotomus (Larroussius) perniciosus, a vector of Leishmania infantum: comparison of sugar fed and blood fed sand flies

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Parasite-vector interactions are fundamental in the transmission of vector-borne diseases such as leishmaniasis. <it>Leishmania </it>development in the vector sand fly is confined to the digestive tract, where sand fly midgut molecules interact with the parasites. In this work we sequenced and analyzed two midgut-specific cDNA libraries from sugar fed and blood fed female <it>Phlebotomus perniciosus </it>and compared the transcript expression profiles.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A total of 4111 high quality sequences were obtained from the two libraries and assembled into 370 contigs and 1085 singletons. Molecules with putative roles in blood meal digestion, peritrophic matrix formation, immunity and response to oxidative stress were identified, including proteins that were not previously reported in sand flies. These molecules were evaluated relative to other published sand fly transcripts. Comparative analysis of the two libraries revealed transcripts differentially expressed in response to blood feeding. Molecules up regulated by blood feeding include a putative peritrophin (<it>PperPer1</it>), two chymotrypsin-like proteins (<it>PperChym1 </it>and <it>PperChym2</it>), a putative trypsin (<it>PperTryp3</it>) and four putative microvillar proteins (<it>PperMVP1</it>, <it>2</it>, <it>4 </it>and <it>5</it>). Additionally, several transcripts were more abundant in the sugar fed midgut, such as two putative trypsins (<it>PperTryp1 </it>and <it>PperTryp2</it>), a chymotrypsin (<it>PperChym3</it>) and a microvillar protein (<it>PperMVP3</it>). We performed a detailed temporal expression profile analysis of the putative trypsin transcripts using qPCR and confirmed the expression of blood-induced and blood-repressed trypsins. Trypsin expression was measured in <it>Leishmania infantum</it>-infected and uninfected sand flies, which identified the <it>L. infantum</it>-induced down regulation of <it>PperTryp3 </it>at 24 hours post-blood meal.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This midgut tissue-specific transcriptome provides insight into the molecules expressed in the midgut of <it>P. perniciosus</it>, an important vector of visceral leishmaniasis in the Old World. Through the comparative analysis of the libraries we identified molecules differentially expressed during blood meal digestion. Additionally, this study provides a detailed comparison to transcripts of other sand flies. Moreover, our analysis of putative trypsins demonstrated that <it>L. infantum </it>infection can reduce the transcript abundance of trypsin <it>PperTryp3 </it>in the midgut of <it>P. perniciosus</it>.</p

    Combined System of Activated Sludge and Ozonation for the Treatment of Kraft E1 Effluent

    The treatment of paper mill effluent for COD, TOC, total phenols and color removal was investigated using combined activated sludge-ozonation processes and single processes. The combined activated sludge-O3/pH 10 treatment was able to remove around 80% of COD, TOC and color from Kraft E1 effluent. For the total phenols, the efficiency removal was around 70%. The ozonation post treatment carried out at pH 8.3 also showed better results than the single process. The COD, TOC, color and total phenols removal efficiency obtained were 75.5, 59.1, 77 and 52.3%, respectively. The difference in the concentrations of free radical produced by activated sludge-O3/pH 10 and activated sludge-O3/pH 8.3 affected mainly the TOC and total phenol removal values
