In situ temperature measurements in microwave-heated gassolid catalytic systems. Detection of hot spots and solid-fluid temperature gradients in the ethylene epoxidation reaction

    Get PDF
Infrared thermographic techniques have been used for the first time to determine real-time gas and solid temperatures, as well as gas- solid temperature gradients in microwave heated structured reactors. A special reactor vessel has been developed that allows direct observation of the catalyst under microwave heating, and an operating procedure is presented to obtain gas and solid apparent emissivities as a function of temperature. These values are thereafter used to calculate temperatures at any point in the gas and solid phases under reaction. The method has been used to obtain gas and solid temperatures during the ethylene epoxidation reaction carried out on a silver-copper oxide catalyst. The direct heating of the monolith walls produced a stable, large temperature gradient between the solid and the gas phase

In this paper, we present a general methodology to solve a wide variety of classical lattice path counting problems in a uniform way. These counting problems are related to Dyck paths, Motzkin paths and some generalizations. The methodology uses weighted automata, equations of ordinary generating functions and continued fractions. This new methodology is called Counting Automata Methodology. It is a variation of the technique proposed by Rutten, which is called Coinductive Counting

A photovoltaic pumping system for irrigation in agriculture has been modelled using Matlab’s Simulink. The model has been applied to simulate the irrigation systems of a typical 20 ha farm in various locations. From the results of the simulation, the economic analysis of the required photovoltaic systems has been carried out. It can be concluded that the developed model successfully characterizes the operation of the photovoltaic systems. The results of the economic analysis show that photovoltaic energy lets a cost reduction of the electric power used by farmers.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Vegetative growth response of beets and lettuce to stored human urine

ArticleIn this work, we present the experimental results of the effect of stored human urine (SHU) on the growth of beets (Beta vulgaris L) and lettuce (Lactuca sativaL). We apply different amounts of SHU according to the recommended dose of nitrogen, considering soil from farmland and vermiculite as substrates. The last allows us to determine with high precision the isolated effect of SHU over the vegetative development of beet plants, without considering other nutrients present in common soils. Experimental results demonstrate that the application of SHU has no significant effects on lettuce vegetative growth under our soil conditions. In contrast, SHU can be used successfully as a fertilizer of beets. The optimum dose was found at 120kgN ha-1and resulted in average dry weight of 125g. However, if the dose exceeds the optimum levels, the growth of the plant is inhibited. Beets fertilized with SHU does not pose any hygienic risk for human consumption. Our findings represent a promising alternative to propose expanding the use of SHU as fertilizer in medium-sized greenhouses and to provide benefits to families in rural areas, with little or no available water supplies

Parametric Polyhedra with at least kk Lattice Points: Their Semigroup Structure and the k-Frobenius Problem

Given an integral d×nd \times n matrix AA, the well-studied affine semigroup \mbox{ Sg} (A)=\{ b : Ax=b, \ x \in {\mathbb Z}^n, x \geq 0\} can be stratified by the number of lattice points inside the parametric polyhedra PA(b)={x:Ax=b,x≥0}P_A(b)=\{x: Ax=b, x\geq0\}. Such families of parametric polyhedra appear in many areas of combinatorics, convex geometry, algebra and number theory. The key themes of this paper are: (1) A structure theory that characterizes precisely the subset \mbox{ Sg}_{\geq k}(A) of all vectors b \in \mbox{ Sg}(A) such that PA(b)∩ZnP_A(b) \cap {\mathbb Z}^n has at least kk solutions. We demonstrate that this set is finitely generated, it is a union of translated copies of a semigroup which can be computed explicitly via Hilbert bases computations. Related results can be derived for those right-hand-side vectors bb for which PA(b)∩ZnP_A(b) \cap {\mathbb Z}^n has exactly kk solutions or fewer than kk solutions. (2) A computational complexity theory. We show that, when nn, kk are fixed natural numbers, one can compute in polynomial time an encoding of \mbox{ Sg}_{\geq k}(A) as a multivariate generating function, using a short sum of rational functions. As a consequence, one can identify all right-hand-side vectors of bounded norm that have at least kk solutions. (3) Applications and computation for the kk-Frobenius numbers. Using Generating functions we prove that for fixed n,kn,k the kk-Frobenius number can be computed in polynomial time. This generalizes a well-known result for k=1k=1 by R. Kannan. Using some adaptation of dynamic programming we show some practical computations of kk-Frobenius numbers and their relatives

Numerical semigroups with large embedding dimension satisfy Wilf's conjecture

We give an affirmative answer to Wilf's conjecture for numerical semigroups satisfying 2 \nu \geq m, where \nu and m are respectively the embedding dimension and the multiplicity of a semigroup. The conjecture is also proved when m \leq 8 and when the semigroup is generated by a generalized arithmetic sequence.Comment: 13 page

Flexible workflows for on-the-fly electronmicroscopy single-particle image processing using Scipion

Electron microscopy of macromolecular structures is an approach that is in increasing demand in the field of structural biology. The automation of image acquisition has greatly increased the potential throughput of electron microscopy. Here, the focus is on the possibilities in Scipion to implement flexible and robust image-processing workflows that allow the electron-microscope operator and the user to monitor the quality of image acquisition, assessing very simple acquisition measures or obtaining a first estimate of the initial volume, or the data resolution and heterogeneity, without any need for programming skills. These workflows can implement intelligent automatic decisions and they can warn the user of possible acquisition failures. These concepts are illustrated by analysis of the well known 2.2 Å resolution β-galactosidase data setThe authors would like to acknowledge financial support from The Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness through the BIO2016-76400-R (AEI/FEDER, UE) grant, the Comunidad Auto´noma de Madrid through grant S2017/BMD3817, the Instituto de Salud Carlos III (PT17/0009/0010), the European Union (EU) and Horizon 2020 through the CORBEL grant (INFRADEV-1-2014-1, Proposal 654248), the ‘la Caixa’ Foundation (ID 100010434, Fellow LCF/BQ/ IN18/11660021), Elixir–EXCELERATE (INFRADEV-3- 2015, Proposal 676559), iNEXT (INFRAIA-1-2014-2015, Proposal 653706), EOSCpilot (INFRADEV-04-2016, Proposal 739563) and INSTRUCT–ULTRA (INFRADEV03-2016-2017, Proposal 731005
