    Pragmatic Rhetorical Principles in Isocrates

    Get PDF
While Isocrates regarded rhetoric not as a rigid discipline, but as a creative and pliable art, it is not possible to standardize art. According to his point of view (Against the sophists 13.13), good speech depends on certain principles: opportunity (kairos); suitability (to prepon) and novelty (kainos). The sophists, according to Isocrates, did not pay attention to these principles, and that was their main mistake. The problem was, however, that it was difficult to teach these principles to the disciples, precisely because rhetoric was a flexible art. Still, although it is not possible to provide fixed rules concerning rhetorical principles, the ancient rhetor provided some useful suggestions in his works which make it possible to reconstruct the nature of these principles

Because I Am Not Here: Second Life Based Artists, Four Selected Case Studies

Second Life (SL) is an on-line virtual world ‘inhabited’ by avatars that are designed by actual life users (SL residents). In SL identity, sociability and subjectivity are important and permanent aspects of the goal of having a second (virtual) existence. My doctoral thesis (in progress) is centred on the work of 4 artists in SL and how they play with autoempathy, identity an subjectivity in the liminal shifting of aesthetic regimes (that rely upon temporalities rather than spatialities) present in their SL artwork. This is what Anna Munster calls the distribute aesthetics1 of virtual worlds. Lacan Galicia, my avatar in SL, works in four case studies concerning these subjects. The expected findings of my research can contribute to the discussion of the theories of digital aesthetics and interactive virtual worlds at large

Because I am Not Here, Selected Second Life-Based Art Case Studies. Subjectivity, Autoempathy and Virtual World Aesthetics

Second Life is a virtual world accessible through the Internet in which users create objects and spaces, and interact socially through 3D avatars. Certain artists use the platform as a medium for art creation, using the aesthetic, spatial, temporal and technological features of SL as raw material. Code and scripts applied to animate and manipulate objects, avatars and spaces are important in this sense. These artists, their avatars and artwork in SL are at the centre of my research questions: what does virtual existence mean and what is its purpose when stemming from aesthetic exchange in SL? Through a qualitative research method mixing distribute aesthetics, digital art and media theories, the goal is to examine aesthetic exchange in the virtual: subjectivity and identity and their possible shifting patterns as reflected in avatar-artists. A theoretical and methodological emphasis from a media studies perspective is applied to digital media and networks, contributing to the reshaping of our epistemologies of these media, in contrast to the traditional emphasis on communicational aspects. Four case studies, discourse and text analysis, as well as interviews in-world and via email, plus observation while immersed in SL, are used in the collection of data, experiences, objects and narratives from avatars Eva and Franco Mattes, Gazira Babeli, Bryn Oh and China Tracy. The findings confirm the role that aesthetic exchange in virtual worlds has in the rearrangement of ideas and epistemologies on the virtual and networked self. This is reflected by the fact that the artists examined—whether in SL or AL—create and embody avatars from a liminal (ambiguous) modality of identity, subjectivity and interaction. Mythopoeia (narrative creation) and experiencing oneself as ‘another’ through multiplied identity and subjectivity are the outcomes of code performance and machinima (films created in-world). They constitute a modus operandi (syntax) in which episteme, techne and embodiment work in symbiosis with those of the machine, affected by the synthetic nature of code and liminality in SL. The combined perspective from media studies and distribute aesthetics proves to be an effective method for studying these subjects, contributing to the discussion of contemporary virtual worlds and art theories

A Nonlinear Technical Indicator Selection Approach for Stock Markets. Application to the Chinese Stock Market

    Get PDF
In this paper we present a combinatorial nonlinear technical indicator approach for the identification of appropriate combinations of stock technical indicators as inputs in non-linear models. This approach is illustrated with the example of Chinese stock indexes and 35 different stock technical indicators using neural networks as the chosen non-linear method. Stock market technical indicators can generate contradictory signals regarding the future performance of the stock analyzed. Furthermore, some non-linear methods, such as neural networks, can have poor generalization power when dealing with problems of high dimensionality due to the issue of local minima. Therefore, non-linear approaches that can identify appropriate combinations of input variables are of clear importance. It will be shown that the proposed approach, when using neural networks as classifiers, generates error rates lower than those using directly neural networks without dimensionality reduction. It will also be shown that merely increasing the number of neurons does not increase the accuracy. The approach proposed in this article is illustrated with an application to the stock market using neural networks but it could be applied to other fields and it can also be used with other non-linear techniques such as for instance support vector machines.Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación PID2019-106212RB-C41

Evaluación de las condiciones predisponentes a enfermedades en granjas porcinas a pequeña escala en un ambiente urbano en el noroeste de la Ciudad de México

The objective of the work was to develop and apply an instrument to identify the predisposing conditions to the occurrence of diseases in 12 small-scale swine farms in an urban environment. The percentage of negative points obtained in general and by type of farm was analyzed according to its production, fattening (T1) or full cycle (T2), where the highest percentage was for T1 (50 %) and for T2 (66.0 %). Likewise, the data were analyzed to compare the farms T1 and T2 in relation to the percentages of each section that makes up the survey, where only a difference in the “health state” section (P<0.0001) was found. The relationship between the population density per m2 with respect to the maximum percentage of points reached by farms showed no difference (R2, 0.03; P=0.854). No correlation was found between the percentage of points obtained with the number of animals (R2, 0.13; P=0.722). In relation to the average percentage per section by population size, only a difference in the “feeding” section (P<0.0006) was detected, indicating that farms with 10 to 40 swine obtained fewer points in this section. It is concluded that the methodology for the evaluation of conditions predisposing to diseases in this type of farms proved to be applicable. It was determined that farm size and population density are not a predisposing factor in these farms, but the predisposing conditions to the occurrence of diseases differ between full-cycle and fattening farms.

    Get PDF
This manuscript describes the MatSWMM toolbox, an open-source Matlab, Python, and LabVIEW-based software package for the analysis and design of real-time control (RTC) strategies in urban drainage systems (UDS). MatSWMM includes control-oriented models of UDS, and the storm water management model (SWMM) of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as well as systematic-system edition functionalities. Furthermore, MatSWMM is also provided with a population-dynamics-based controller for UDS with three of the fundamental dynamics, i.e., the Smith, projection, and replicator dynamics. The simulation algorithm, and a detailed description of the features of MatSWMM are presented in this manuscript in order to illustrate the capabilities that the tool has for educational and research purposes.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
