Domain Growth in Ising Systems with Quenched Disorder

    Get PDF
We present results from extensive Monte Carlo (MC) simulations of domain growth in ferromagnets and binary mixtures with quenched disorder. These are modeled by the "random-bond Ising model" and the "dilute Ising model" with either nonconserved (Glauber) spin-flip kinetics or conserved (Kawasaki) spin-exchange kinetics. In all cases, our MC results are consistent with power-law growth with an exponent θ(T,ϵ)\theta (T,\epsilon) which depends on the quench temperature TT and the disorder amplitude ϵ\epsilon. Such exponents arise naturally when the coarsening domains are trapped by energy barriers which grow logarithmically with the domain size. Our MC results show excellent agreement with the predicted dependence of θ(T,ϵ)\theta (T,\epsilon).Comment: 11 pages, 15 figure

Preliminary Investigations for Policy Framework to Regulate the Utilisation of Residual Strength of Demolition Waste Aggregate in Cement Concrete Mix

    Get PDF
Millions of tonnes of demolition waste of different types is generated from various sources in the construction industry. Improper disposal of such waste results in loss of valuable land in cities and also such deposits may breach into reservoirs, water bodies, canals, etc. leading to blocking the path for the free flow of rainwater. Dissolution of harmful compounds that may be present results in contamination of water bodies. Hence it is necessary to frame guidelines and rules for regulating the various Demolition activities. This facilitates the granting of permission, actual demolition, segregating different materials and making the best use of the derived aggregates for various activities. Using derived aggregates in partial /full replacement is possible in concrete mixes of different grades. An attempt is made to collect demolition waste from three different locations. Requisite tests were conducted. An attempt is made to design a pavement quality concrete (PQC) of M40 grade to satisfy compressive and flexural strength requirements. A policy framework is needed at the national level for utilizing demolition waste aggregate in civil engineering works of both structural and nonstructural applications. Proper regulation of CD waste management is essential to channelize the entire process to convert it into useful construction material

Properties of Umbral Dots from Stray Light Corrected Hinode Filtergrams

High resolution blue continuum filtergrams from Hinode are employed to study the umbral fine structure of a regular unipolar sunspot. The removal of scattered light from the images increases the rms contrast by a factor of 1.45 on average. Improvement in image contrast renders identification of short filamentary structures resembling penumbrae that are well separated from the umbra-penumbra boundary and comprise bright filaments/grains flanking dark filaments. Such fine structures were recently detected from ground based telescopes and have now been observed with Hinode. A multi-level tracking algorithm was used to identify umbral dots in both the uncorrected and corrected images and to track them in time. The distribution of the values describing the photometric and geometric properties of umbral dots are more easily affected by the presence of stray light while it is less severe in the case of kinematic properties. Statistically, umbral dots exhibit a peak intensity, effective diameter, lifetime, horizontal speed and a trajectory length of 0.29 I_QS, 272 km, 8.4 min, 0.45 km/s and 221 km respectively. The 2 hr 20 min time sequence depicts several locations where umbral dots tend to appear and disappear repeatedly with various time intervals. The correction for scattered light in the Hinode filtergrams facilitates photometry of umbral fine structure which can be related to results obtained from larger telescopes and numerical simulations.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ : 10 pages, 10 figures, 3 table

Effect of elastane-cotton core-spun yarn liveliness on woven modified mock leno fabric properties

14-18The present study is aimed at accessing the impact of elastane core liveliness on physical and mechanical properties of elastane-cotton core-spun yarn fabric. The yarn liveliness is altered by changing draw ratio on ring frame and thus the elastane core % in the yarn. The 4 samples of 30s Ne elastane core-spun cotton yarn have been produced using 40 den elastane having 5, 7, 9 and 11% elastane core adjusted by using suitable draw ratio on ring frame. These elastane core-spun cotton yarns are used in weft direction to produce fabric sample. These fabric samples are tested for various physical and mechanical properties as per ASTM standards. The findings reveal that the yarn core liveliness has significant effect on various physical and mechanical properties of fabric

    Mechanism of action of probiotics

    Get PDF
The modern diet doesn't provide the required amount of beneficial bacteria. Maintenance of a proper microbial ecology in the host is the main criteria to be met for a healthy growth. Probiotics are one such alternative that are supplemented to the host where by and large species of Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium and Saccharomyces are considered as main probiotics. The field of probiotics has made stupendous strides though there is no major break through in the identification of their mechanism of action. They exert their activity primarily by strengthening the intestinal barrier and immunomodulation. The main objective of the study was to provide a deep insight into the effect of probiotics against the diseases, their applications and proposed mechanism of action

This reserch aims to examine the effect of managerial ownership structure, debt covenant, financial distress, growth opportunities, risk of litigation and leverage which accounting conservatism. This study uses secondary data. Sample selection technique used is purposive sampling. 53 companies listed in Indonesia stock exchange from 2010 to 2012. The analytical method is miltiple linear regression using SPSS version 20. Data collection for this research is documentation. The influenced managerial ownership structure variable for the accounting conservatism were 0.028, debt covenant for the accounting conservatism were 0.009, growth opportunities for the accounting conservatism were 0.029, risk of litigation were 0.001, and leverage were 0.045 have a significant influence on accounting conservatism. Meanwhile financial distress for the accounting conservatism were 0.667, the result show that financial distress wasn\u27t significant effect. The big influence of managerial ownership structure, debt covenant, growth opportunities, risk of litigation and leverage were 61.20%

Age-related changes in blood lymphocyte subsets of south Indian children

Background. Enumeration of lymphocyte subsets has been widely used for the diagnosis and monitoring of several haematological and immunological disorders. Various studies have demonstrated age, sex and racial differences in lymphocyte subset expression. Reference values are not available for Indian children and there is a need for this information to replace commonly used, but inappropriate, adult lymphocyte subset ranges. Methods. One hundred thirty-eight healthy children be tween 3 and 15 years of age, attending a local government school in Chennai, South India were included in the study. Haemoglobin levels, and total and differential cell counts were determined using an automated counter and lymphocyte subsets were analysed by flowcytornetry. Results. The mean (SD) absolute lymphocyte count declined with age from 4338 (1031) at 3 years to reach a plateau of 3096 (914) at 11-13 years (p < 0.05). A significant decline was also observed in the absolute numbers of CD3+, CD4+, CD8+ and CD19 + cells. However, the percentage values of CD3+, CD4+, CD8+, CD16/56+ cells and the CD4/CD8 ratio remained fairly stable across the age range. Conclusion. Our data would prove useful in interpreting disease-related changes in lymphocyte subsets in Indian children of different age groups. Age-related decrease in the absolute lymphocyte count as well as numbers of CD4 and CD8 cells was found to occur between the ages of 3 and 11 years. A normogram relating age to CD4 count has been developed
