    An improved lateral control wheel steering law for the Transport Systems Research Vehicle (TSRV)

    A lateral control wheel steering law with improved performance was developed for the Transport Systems Research Vehicle (TSRV) simulation and used in the Microwave Landing System research project. The control law converted rotational hand controller inputs into roll rate commands, manipulated ailerons, spoilers, and the rudder to achieve the desired roll rates. The system included automatic turn coordination, track angle hold, and autopilot/autoland modes. The resulting control law produced faster roll rates (15 degrees/sec), quicker response to command reversals, and safer bank angle limits, while using a more concise program code

    Real-time simulation model of the HL-20 lifting body

    A proposed manned spacecraft design, designated the HL-20, has been under investigation at Langley Research Center. Included in that investigation are flight control design and flying qualities studies utilizing a man-in-the-loop real-time simulator. This report documents the current real-time simulation model of the HL-20 lifting body vehicle, known as version 2.0, presently in use at NASA Langley Research Center. Included are data on vehicle aerodynamics, inertias, geometries, guidance and control laws, and cockpit displays and controllers. In addition, trim case and dynamic check case data is provided. The intent of this document is to provide the reader with sufficient information to develop and validate an equivalent simulation of the HL-20 for use in real-time or analytical studies

    A new record of Percursaria percursa (Ulvaceae, Ulvales) on the North Island, New Zealand

    The filamentous green alga Percursaria percursa (Ulvaceae, Ulvales) was recorded for the first time on the North Island of New Zealand at mokoroa Estuary, Tauranga Harbour. This species is previously known within New Zealand from only two records, both from the South Island. In Tauranga Harbour, this species was restricted to anoxic estuarine sediments where mangrove forests had been mulched, and mulchate left in situ. Percursaria percursa was found intertwined with Ulva spp. and Rhizoclonium spp. Surveys of other North and South Island estuaries suggest that this alga, although occurring as part of nuisance green algal blooms in Tauranga Harbour, has only colonized human-impacted locations, and has not yet been observed in natural' estuarine ecosystems in New Zealand. As this species was found intertwined with other mat-forming filamentous green algae, it can easily be misidentified in the field, leading to both over- and under-reporting of species occurrence

    Launch-pad abort capabilities of the HL-20 lifting body

    The capability of the HL-20 lifting body to perform an abort maneuver from the launch pad to a horizontal landing was studied. The study involved both piloted and batch simulation models of the vehicle. A point-mass model of the vehicle was used for trajectory optimization studies. The piloted simulation was performed in the Langley Visual/Motion Simulator in the fixed-base mode. A candidate maneuver was developed and refined for the worst-case launch-pad-to-landing-site geometry with an iterative procedure of off-line maneuver analysis followed by piloted evaluations and heuristic improvements to the candidate maneuver. The resulting maneuver demonstrates the launch-site abort capability of the HL-20 and dictates requirements for nominal abort-motor performance. The sensitivity of the maneuver to variations in several design parameters was documented

    DNA Methylation Differs in Bluegill Among Temperate, Anthropogenically Warmed, and Tropical Lakes

    Epigenetic mechanisms can alter gene expression and phenotypes in organisms responding to environmental changes. Within environmental parameters, temperature changes are notably the most pervasive abiotic factor for ectotherms, directly affecting organismal survival and fitness. The goal of this study was to investigate the scale of DNA methylation in populations of a cosmopolitan freshwater species occupying disparate thermal regimes. DNA methylation levels were compared among bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus) populations from an ambient temperature, temperate lake (Lake Mattoon), a nearby power plant-cooling lake (Lake Coffeen), and a tropical lake (Lake Lucchetti). We used epiRADseq to screen levels of DNA methylation at 105,811 loci among fish. We found levels of total DNA methylation increased among specimens as water temperature of lakes increased from the ambient temperature, temperate lake to the tropical lake. We identified loci with statistically significant differences in the frequency of DNA methylation among individuals between lakes: 654 loci between Lake Mattoon and Lake Lucchetti fish and 373 loci between Lake Coffeen and Lake Lucchetti fish. Considering that a previous study on the same power plant-cooling reservoirs showed a shorter lifespan, decrease in growth performance, and the populations skewed towards younger fish, this study observed DNA methylation pattern may be an important mechanism contributing to the observed phenotypic variations in bluegill from a anthropogenically-warmed lake compared to an ambient temperature lake. Our study suggests that epigenetic regulation of phenotypic plasticity in aquatic organisms may be a critical factor in understanding the organismal response to environmental stress
