Air quality during uncontrolled fires: a multi-years case of study

    Get PDF
Exposure to high level of pollutant as a consequence of uncontrolled fire is a issue that must be managed in the right way in order to protect environment and ensure a safe habitat for humans, flora and fauna, because is well know that emissions occurred during those events could serious contaminate air soil and water, and some pollutant could be hazardous for the human health (Lemieux, 2002). During uncontrolled fires a lot of contaminants may be emitted, but in high concern for the human health are persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and PAHs (Coudon et al., 2019, Zhang et al., 2008). Moreover uncontrolled burning could release polychlorinated biphenyls dioxin-like (PCB dl), that are generated as by-product during industrial combustions. Those pollutants are all of high concern for human health because they have well-known carcinogenic and mutagenic properties, e.g. is well known that PAHs is the main carcinogenic constituent of ambient aerosol (Zhang et al., 2008, Fent et al., 2018; Ravindra et al., 2008). Moreover, PCDD/PCDF, frequently referred as dioxin, are recognized as toxic chemical pollutant, with endocrine proprieties and toxic dioxin congener is classified as group1 carcinogen by the international agency for research in cancer (IARC). The aim of this study is evaluate how uncontrolled fires can affect air quality by characterizing persistent organic pollutant emitted from some events occurred from 2015 to 2018 in Veneto region (northern Italy). This area is one of the most polluted and urbanized areas in Europe (Larsen et al., 2012)and uncontrolled fire can further enhance this severe situation, leading air pollution to critical level. During those accidental events the Environmental Protection Agency of Veneto (ARPAV), in order to monitoring the effect of fires, and ensure public health, collected some air samples using Hi-vol samplers equipped with quartz fiber filter (QFF) for collecting “particulate” phase compounds and a polyurethane foam plug (PUF) for retaining “gas-phase” compounds. Subsequently, polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/PCDF), polychlorinated biphenyls dioxin-like (PCB dl) and Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), were analysed using a High Resolution Gas Chromatography (HRGC), coupled with High Resolution Mass Spectrometry (HRMS). As expected results show large increase of PCDD/PCDF, PCB dl and PAHs during and immediately after incidental fires, with differences in pollutant composition. It’s noticeable how, in a few time (hours to days) pollutant concentration presented a clear and strong drop, leading air quality to better conditions. This drop is probably due to meteorological factors, that will be investigated

URBAN DENSITY AND WELFARE: THE PORTO MARAVILHA CASE

The link between urban density and individual welfare is not obvious. That being said, Rio de Janeiro’s project for the revival of the city’s port area aims at fostering the area’s urban density. Why is this desirable, considering that the urbanization process of many Brazilian cities – including Rio de Janeiro – has been characterized by low densities? And, taking a step forward, why is it worth revitalizing central blighted areas? In order to answer these questions, this article not only identifies some main features of urban sprawl, the social cost it entails, and why blighted areas are attractive spaces for urban revival projects, but also goes through the history of urban revival projects in Brazil, looking to identify how the discussion on urban density fits the different phases of these projects. Finally, this article analyses the legal mechanisms used to carry out urban revival projects aimed at fostering urban densities in Brazil.Não é intuitiva a relação entre densidade urbana e qualidade de vida.

In this article we examine the current breakdown of Prouni scholarships per kind of undergraduate course so as to identify the main fields of knowledge that are made available in the higher education market by Prouni and to which extent the program is compatible with the need to foster higher education in strategic fields of knowledge, which is an official priority of the government that designed the program. We argue that path dependence can contribute to explaining why Law No. 11.096/2005, which instituted Prouni, falls within the institutional framework that comprises the growth of higher education supply still existent today in Brazil. This model is focused on private institutions of higher education and is characterized by an underinvestment in fields of knowledge that are strategic for national development

The aim of this research is to develop a multiparametric downscaling analysis for the detection of abandoned waste in the environment. This methodology, using a multi-technological approach, involves the adoption VHR satellite images, Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) and Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGV). The identified Warning Areas (WA) will be investigated through an in-situ analysis with air quality measurement devices based on advanced sensors mounted on drones. The creation of a Cadastre Accumulation of Abandoned Materials (CAMA) and the related APP will allow the administrations to monitor the phenomenon. Finally, the waste product analysis, retrieved by means of UAS dataset computation, allows to retrieve some interesting prospects regarding Waste to Energy framework. Here, preliminary results obtained by the on-going INTESA Project are presented

Separatrix splitting at a Hamiltonian 02iω0^2 i\omega bifurcation

We discuss the splitting of a separatrix in a generic unfolding of a degenerate equilibrium in a Hamiltonian system with two degrees of freedom. We assume that the unperturbed fixed point has two purely imaginary eigenvalues and a double zero one. It is well known that an one-parametric unfolding of the corresponding Hamiltonian can be described by an integrable normal form. The normal form has a normally elliptic invariant manifold of dimension two. On this manifold, the truncated normal form has a separatrix loop. This loop shrinks to a point when the unfolding parameter vanishes. Unlike the normal form, in the original system the stable and unstable trajectories of the equilibrium do not coincide in general. The splitting of this loop is exponentially small compared to the small parameter. This phenomenon implies non-existence of single-round homoclinic orbits and divergence of series in the normal form theory. We derive an asymptotic expression for the separatrix splitting. We also discuss relations with behaviour of analytic continuation of the system in a complex neighbourhood of the equilibrium

Oval Domes. The Case of the Basílica de la Virgen de los Desamparados of Valencia

[EN] The dome of the Basilica de la Virgen de los Desamparados of Valencia is an emblematic example of Valencian baroque architecture and painting. Its shape, oval or elliptical, has been the subject of controversy in various studies. The study of oval domes throughout history is a very interesting field of research because, among other things, the determination of the exact shape is important in order to conclude how it was built. We approach the problem from a new mathematical point of view, calculating the distances between the points that make up the real data cloud and the hypothetical form considered, oval or ellipse. The use of modern graphic surveying techniques, carried out with a 3D laser scanner, and computation with the powerful symbolic and numerical mathematical solver, Mathematica, has allowed us to accurately determine the shape of the dome and determine that its sections are not well-described by ellipses. A better fit is obtained assuming that sections are ovals. The programming and generalization of the mathematical method employed in this work will allow it to be applied to determine the exact geometry of other oval or ellipsoidal vaults.Calvo Roselló, V.; Capilla Tamborero, E.; Navarro Fajardo, JC. Uncovering genetic and non-genetic biomarkers specific for exudative age-related macular degeneration : significant association of twelve variants

    Get PDF
Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) represents one of the most sightthreatening diseases in developed countries that substantially impacts the patients' lifestyle by compromising everyday activities, such as reading and driving. In this context, understanding the prevalence, burden, and population-specific risk/ protective factors of AMD is essential for adequate health care planning and provision. Our work aimed to characterize exudative AMD in Italian population and to identify the susceptibility/protective factors (genetic variants, age, sex, smoking and dietary habits) which are specific for the onset of disease. Our study involved a cohort of 1976 subjects, including 976 patients affected with exudative AMD and 1000 control subjects. In particular, the sample cohort has been subjected to a large genotyping analysis of 20 genetic variants which are known to be associated with AMD among European and Asiatic populations. This analysis revealed that 8 genetic variants (CFH, ARMS2, IL-8, TIMP3, SLC16A8, RAD51B, VEGFA and COL8A1) were significantly associated with AMD susceptibility. Successively, we performed a multivariate analysis, considering both genetic and non-genetic data available for our sample cohort. The multivariate analysis showed that age, smoking, dietary habits and sex, together with the genetic variants, were significantly associated with AMD in our population. Altogether, these data represent a starting point for the set-up of adequate preventive and personalized strategies aimed to decrease the burden of disease and improve the patients' quality of life
