Skin Cancers in Croatia, 2003–2005: Epidemiological Study
This study presents the incidence of major nonmelanoma skin cancers (major NMSCs), other nonmelanoma skin cancers (other NMSCs) and malignant melanoma (MM) in Croatia. The skin cancers recorded between 1 January 2003 and 31 December 2005 were retrospectively analyzed. Until 2003, the incidence of major NMSCs and other NMSCs was not estimated in Croatia. Incident cases of NMSCs were identified by the use of a questionnaire distributed to dermatology departments in Croatia and then collected at the University Department of Dermatology and Venereology, Zagreb University Hospital Center, and from the records kept at the National Cancer Registry. Incident cases of MM were extracted from the National Cancer Registry. During the 3-year period, 9,479 cases of major NMSCs are recorded, 4,622 (49%) in male and 4,857 (51%) in female patients. The crude incidence rate was 72.1/100,000 for males and 70.3/100,000 for females. Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) was the most common major NMSC in both sexes. In the total number of major NMSCs, there were 7,244 cases of BCC. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) was the second most common major NMSC. There were 1,860 SCC cases. The crude incidence rate was 54.9/100,000 for BCC in males, 53.9/100,000 in females, and 14.6/100,000 for SCC in male and 13.4/100,000 in female patients. Other NMSCs were registered in 119 cases (53% male and 47% female). The crude incidence rate was 0.9/100,000 for male and 0.8/100,000 for female patients. MM was registered in 1,427 cases (48% male and 52% female.) The crude incidence rate was 10.7/100,000 for males and females. These results will serve as reference for studying the patterns of descriptive epidemiology of major NMSCs, other NMSCs and MM in Croatia and Europe in the forthcoming years
Stability of Bose Einstein condensates of hot magnons in YIG
We investigate the stability of the recently discovered room temperature
Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of magnons in Ytrrium Iron Garnet (YIG) films.
We show that magnon-magnon interactions depend strongly on the external field
orientation, and that the BEC in current experiments is actually metastable -
it only survives because of finite size effects, and because the BEC density is
very low. On the other hand a strong field applied perpendicular to the sample
plane leads to a repulsive magnon-magnon interaction; we predict that a
high-density magnon BEC can then be formed in this perpendicular field

Revealing the origin of the vertical hysteresis loop shifts in an exchange biased Co/YMnO bilayer
We have investigated exchange bias effects in bilayers composed by the
antiferromagnetic o-YMnO and ferromagnetic Co thin film by means of SQUID
magnetometry, magnetoresistance, anisotropic magnetoresistance and planar Hall
effect. The magnetization and magnetotransport properties show pronounced
asymmetries in the field and magnetization axes of the field hysteresis loops.
Both exchange bias parameters, the exchange bias field as well as
the magnetization shift , vanish around the N\'eel temperature K. We show that the magnetization shift is also measured by
a shift in the anisotropic magnetoresistance and planar Hall resistance having
those a similar temperature dependence as the one obtained from magnetization
measurements. Because the o-YMnO film is highly insulating, our results
demonstrate that the shift originates at the interface within the
ferromagnetic Co layer. To show that the main results obtained are general and
not because of some special characteristics of the o-YMO layer, similar
measurements were done in Co/CoO micro-wires. The transport and magnetization
characterization of the micro-wires supports the main conclusion that these
effects are related to the response of the ferromagnetic Co layer at the

Hyaluronic acid treatment outcome on the post-extraction wound healing in patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes : a randomized controlled split-mouth study
Hyaluronic acid is widely used in the medical field. However, there is a lack of research about its effect on patients with certain risks, such as compromised wound healing commonly found in patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes. The aim of this study is to investigate the efficacy of hyaluronic acid on the post-extraction wound healing and pain in patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes. The randomized controlled split-mouth study was designed, which included 30 patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes with a bilaterally same teeth in the lower jaw for extraction. The sockets treated with 0.8% hyaluronic acid represented the study group, while the sockets where hyaluronic acid was not applied represented the control group. Wound closure rate (WCR), clinical scores in wound healing scale (WHS) and pain intensity in Visual analogue scale (VAS) were recorded. Patients were followed up on 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th, 25th day after tooth extraction. The results showed a higher WCR at the extraction site where hyaluronic acid was applied. Also, statistically significant difference was found (p< 0.001). In regards to WHS, the sockets treated with hyaluronic acid showed better healing, especially on day 10 (p=0.006) and day 15 (p=0.021). However, there were no statistically significant differences in VAS scores between groups. Hyaluronic acid placed in post-extraction socket in patients with poorly controlled diabetes may improve wound healing, especially in the first days after application
Skeletal muscle oxidative function in vivo and ex vivo in athletes with marked hypertrophy from resistance training
Oxidative function during exercise was evaluated in 11 young athletes with marked skeletal muscle hypertrophy induced by long-term resistance training (RTA, body mass 102.67.3 kg, meanSD) and 11 controls (CTRL, body mass 77.86.0). Pulmonary O2 uptake (V\u27O2) and vastus lateralis muscle fractional O2 extraction (by near-infrared spectroscopy) were determined during an incremental cycle ergometer (CE) and one-leg knee-extension (KE) exercise. Mitochondrial respiration was evaluated ex vivo by high-resolution respirometry in permeabilized vastus lateralis fibers obtained by biopsy. Quadriceps femoris muscle cross sectional area, volume (determined by magnetic resonance imaging) and strength were greater in RTA vs. CTRL (by ~40%, ~33% and ~20%, respectively). V\u27O2peak during CE was higher in RTA vs. CTRL (4.050.64 L min-1 vs. 3.560.30)no difference between groups was observed during KE. The O2 cost of CE exercise was not different between groups. When divided per muscle mass (for CE) or quadriceps muscle mass (for KE) V\u27O2peak was lower (by 15-20%) in RTA vs. CTRL. Vastus lateralis fractional O2 extraction was lower in RTA vs. CTRL at all work rates, both during CE and KE. RTA had higher ADP-stimulated mitochondrial respiration (56.723.7 pmolO2s-1mg-1 ww) vs. CTRL (35.710.2), and a tighter coupling of oxidative phosphorylation. In RTA the greater muscle mass and maximal force, and the enhanced mitochondrial respiration seem to compensate for the hypertrophy-induced impaired peripheral O2 diffusion. A robust SNP barcode for typing Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex strains
Strain-specific genomic diversity in the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) is an important factor in pathogenesis that may affect virulence, transmissibility, host response and emergence of drug resistance. Several systems have been proposed to classify MTBC strains into distinct lineages and families. Here, we investigate single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) as robust (stable) markers of genetic variation for phylogenetic analysis. We identify ~92k SNP across a global collection of 1,601 genomes. The SNP-based phylogeny is consistent with the gold-standard regions of difference (RD) classification system. Of the ~7k strain-specific SNPs identified, 62 markers are proposed to discriminate known circulating strains. This SNP-based barcode is the first to cover all main lineages, and classifies a greater number of sublineages than current alternatives. It may be used to classify clinical isolates to evaluate tools to control the disease, including therapeutics and vaccines whose effectiveness may vary by strain type

Complex-Orbital Order in Fe_3O_4 and Mechanism of the Verwey Transition
Electronic state and the Verwey transition in magnetite (Fe_3O_4) are studied
using a spinless three-band Hubbard model for 3d electrons on the B sites with
the Hartree-Fock approximation and the exact diagonalisation method.
Complex-orbital, e.g., 1/sqrt(2)[|zx> + i |yz>], ordered (COO) states having
noncollinear orbital moments ~ 0.4 mu_B on the B sites are obtained with the
cubic lattice structure of the high-temperature phase. The COO state is a novel
form of magnetic ordering within the orbital degree of freedom. It arises from
the formation of Hund's second rule states of spinless pseudo-d molecular
orbitals in the Fe_4 tetrahedral units of the B sites and ferromagnetic
alignment of their fictitious orbital moments. A COO state with longer
periodicity is obtained with pseudo-orthorhombic Pmca and Pmc2_1 structures for
the low-temperature phase. The state spontaneously lowers the crystal symmetry
to the monoclinic and explains experimentally observed rhombohedral cell
deformation and Jahn-Teller like distortion. From these findings, we consider
that at the Verwey transition temperature, the COO state remaining to be
short-range order impeded by dynamical lattice distortion in high temperature
is developed into that with long-range order coupled with the monoclinic
