Professores Homens nas Séries Iniciais: escolha profissional e mal-estar docente.

    Get PDF

Variation in egg size of the fresh-water prawn Macrobrachium amazonicum (Decapoda: Palaemonidae)

Egg size of the fresh-water prawn Macrobrachium amazonicum varied among ecologically isolated or geographically distant populations of the Amazon basin. The mean volume of both recently spawned nonpigmented eggs and older pigmented eyed eggs was smaller in prawns from the Tocantins River (0.14 and 0.20 mm3, respectively) than in those from the middle Amazon (0.17 and 0.25 mm3). The largest eggs (0.19 and 0.27 mm3) were displayed by females from the Iquitos and Guapore Rivers. Since the egg volume was independent of female body size, it was attributed to population specific characteristics. The egg size increased with the distance of the sampling site from the ocean, suggesting a progressive divergence of this species from a typical littoral population to an inland form, in a still active fresh-waterization process similar to the pattern evolved among other species in the genus Macrobrachium

Online and offline representations of biocultural diversity: A political ecology perspective on nature-based tourism and indigenous communities in the Brazilian Pantanal

The concept of biocultural diversity is confronted with contemporary changes that impact on local communities, such as globalization and digital transformations. Engaging the conceptual flexibility of ‘biocultural diversity’, we studied nature-based tourism at the intersection of indigenous communities and the digital realm. We employed a political ecology perspective to examine online and offline representations of biocultural diversity in the Brazilian Pantanal, one of the biggest wetlands in the world, and home to groups of peoples known as the Pantaneiros. Data from interviews with 48 stakeholders in the tourist sector were structured along three ‘myths’—the Uncivilised, Unrestrained, and Unchanged—for which we have also constructed counter narratives. Each myth denoted the primacy of biodiversity, and ignored broader dimensions of the Pantanal as a bioculturally diverse landscape. The relationships of the Pantaneiros with their environment were found to be intricate and had clear repercussions for tourism, but ironically, reference to the Pantaneiro culture in nature-based tourism was superficial. Moreover, thriving on the myths, this form of tourism perpetuates skewed power structures and social inequalities. Lower-class Pantaneiros likely suffer most from this. We recommend stakeholder engagement with a biocultural design that facilitates the integration of other-than-biodiversity values, and that thereby promotes sustainability of the entire social-ecological system

Salivary protein candidates for biomarkers of oral disorders in people with a crack cocaine use disorder

The use of cocaine and its main derivative, crack, can cause some systemic effects that may lead to the development of some oral disorders. Objective: To assess the oral health of people with a crack cocaine use disorder and identify salivary protein candidates for biomarkers of oral disorders. Methodology: A total of 40 volunteers hospitalized for rehabilitation for crack cocaine addiction were enrolled; nine were randomly selected for proteomic analysis. Intraoral examination, report of DMFT, gingival and plaque index, xerostomia, and non-stimulated saliva collection were performed. A list of proteins identified was generated from the UniProt database and manually revised. Results: The mean age (n=40) was 32 (±8.88; 18–51) years; the mean DMFT index was 16±7.70; the mean plaque and gingival index were 2.07±0.65 and 2.12±0.64, respectively; and 20 (50%) volunteers reported xerostomia. We identified 305 salivary proteins (n=9), of which 23 were classified as candidate for biomarkers associated with 14 oral disorders. The highest number of candidates for biomarkers was associated with carcinoma of head and neck (n=7) and nasopharyngeal carcinoma (n=7), followed by periodontitis (n=6). Conclusions: People with a crack cocaine use disorder had an increased risk of dental caries and gingival inflammation; less than half had oral mucosal alterations, and half experienced xerostomia. As possible biomarkers for 14 oral disorders, 23 salivary proteins were identified. Oral cancer and periodontal disease were the most often associated disorders with biomarkers
