Consumo de peixe, contaminantes e morte súbita em epilepsia: mais benefícios do que riscos
People with epilepsy have an increased risk of dying prematurely and the most common epilepsy-related category of death is sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP). SUDEP is mainly a problem for patients with chronic uncontrolled epilepsy. The ultimate goal of research in SUDEP is to develop new methods to prevent it and actions other than medical and surgical therapies that could be very useful. Nutritional aspects, i.e., omega-3 fatty acids deficiency, could have an interesting role in this scenario. Some animal and clinical studies have suggested that omega-3 fatty acids could be useful in the prevention and treatment of epilepsy and hence SUDEP. It has been ascertained that the only foods that provide large amounts of omega-3 are seafood (fish and shellfish); however, some fish are contaminated with methylmercury, which may counteract the positive effects of omega-3 fatty acids. Our update review summarises the knowledge of the role of fish consumption on epilepsy research.Pessoas com epilepsia têm um risco aumentado de morrer de forma prematura e a causa mais comum de morte relacionada à epilepsia encontra-se na categoria de morte súbita inesperada em epilepsia (SUDEP). SUDEP é um problema significativo para pacientes com epilepsia crônica não controlada. O principal objetivo nas pesquisas em SUDEP é o desenvolvimento de métodos capazes de levar à sua prevenção e ações outras que não medicamentosas e cirúrgicas que podem ser úteis. Os aspectos nutricionais, como por exemplo, a deficiência do ácido graxo ômega-3 pode ter um papel interessante neste cenário. Alguns estudos animais e clínicos têm sugerido que os ácidos graxos ômega-3 podem ser úteis na prevenção e no tratamento da epilepsia e, consequentemente, na SUDEP. Os únicos alimentos que contêm grandes proporções de ômega-3 são os frutos do mar (peixes e mariscos). No entanto, alguns peixes podem estar contaminados com metilmercúrio, o que pode levar a um efeito contrário ao benefício trazido pelos ácidos graxos ômega-3. Diagnosing Schistosomiasis by Detection of Cell-Free Parasite DNA in Human Plasma
Bilharzia (schistosomiasis) occurs in the tropics and subtropics and is one of the most important parasite diseases of humans. It is caused by flukes residing in the vessels of the gut or bladder, causing fever, pain, and bleeding. Bladder cancer or esophageal varices may follow. Diagnosis is difficult, requiring detection of parasite eggs in stool, urine, or gut/bladder biopsies. In this paper, we introduce a fundamentally new way of diagnosing bilharzia from the blood. It has been known for almost 20 years that patients with cancer have tumor-derived DNA circulating in their blood, which can be used for diagnostic purposes. During pregnancy, free DNA from the fetus can be detected in motherly blood, which can be used for diagnosing a range of fetal diseases and pregnancy-associated complications. We found that parasite DNA can be detected in the same way in the blood of patients with bilharzia. In patients with early disease, diagnosis was possible earlier than with any other test. DNA could be detected in all patients with active disease in our study. Patients after treatment had significantly lower parasite DNA concentrations and turned negative 1–2 years after treatment. Future studies should implement the method in large cohorts of patients and should define criteria for the confirmation of the success of treatment by comparing the concentration of fluke DNA before and after therapy
Chromosome evolution in Cophomantini (Amphibia, Anura, Hylinae)
The hylid tribe Cophomantini is a diverse clade of Neotropical treefrogs composed of the genera Aplastodiscus, Boana, Bokermannohyla, Hyloscirtus, and Myersiohyla. The phylogenetic relationships of Cophomantini have been comprehensively reviewed in the literature, providing a suitable framework for the study of chromosome evolution. Employing different banding techniques, we studied the chromosomes of 25 species of Boana and 3 of Hyloscirtus; thus providing, for the first time, data for Hyloscirtus and for 15 species of Boana. Most species showed karyotypes with 2n = 2x = 24 chromosomes; some species of the B. albopunctata group have 2n = 2x = 22, and H. alytolylax has 2n = 2x = 20. Karyotypes are all bi-armed in most species presented, with the exception of H. larinopygion (FN = 46) and H. alytolylax (FN = 38), with karyotypes that have a single pair of small telocentric chromosomes. In most species of Boana, NORs are observed in a single pair of chromosomes, mostly in the small chromosomes, although in some species of the B. albopunctata, B. pulchella, and B. semilineata groups, this marker occurs on the larger pairs 8, 1, and 7, respectively. In Hyloscirtus, NOR position differs in the three studied species: H. alytolylax (4p), H. palmeri (4q), and H. larinopygion (1p). Heterochromatin is a variable marker that could provide valuable evidence, but it would be necesserary to understand the molecular composition of the C-bands that are observed in different species in order to test its putative homology. In H. alytolylax, a centromeric DAPI+ band was observed on one homologue of chromosome pair 2. The band was present in males but absent in females, providing evidence for an XX/XY sex determining system in this species. We review and discuss the importance of the different chromosome markers (NOR position, C-bands, and DAPI/CMA3 patterns) for their impact on the taxonomy and karyotype evolution in Cophomantini

Avaliou-se o conhecimento teórico e prático de 110 auxiliares de enfermagem, 44 médicos e 25 enfermeiros, por meio de 15 questões de múltipla escolha e pela observação do procedimento da medida da pressão arterial. O percentual de acerto quanto ao conhecimento teórico foi de 32%±12% para os auxiliares de enfermagem, 44%±14% para os enfermeiros e 56%±13% para os médicos, sendo que todos foram estatisticamente diferentes entre si (p<0,05). Quanto ao conhecimento prático, este foi de 41%±6% para os auxiliares de enfermagem, 44%±10% para os enfermeiros e 50%±12% para os médicos, sendo que os médicos apresentarem resultados significativamente superiores (p<0,05). Conclui-se que o conhecimento foi pouco satisfatório.<br>Se evaluó el conocimiento teórico y práctico de 110 auxiliares de enfermería, 44 médicos y 25 enfermeros, por medio de 15 preguntas de opciones múltiples y por la observación del procedimiento de la médida de la presión arterial. El porcentaje de acierto en cuanto al conocimiento teórico fue de 32%±12% para los auxiliares de enfermería, 44%±14% para los enfermeros y 56%±13% para los médicos, siendo que todos fuerón estadistícamente diferentes entre si (p< 0,05). Se concluye que el conocimiento fue poco satisfactorio.<br>This study investigated the theoretical and technical knowledge of blood pressure measurement from 110 nursing assistants, 44 physicians and 25 nurses by answering to a questionnaire and practical knowledge through the observation of the blood pressure measurement procedure. In the theoretical knowledge the three categories showed statistically significant differences (p<0,05), the nursing assistants showed a lower indicator of the correctness (32%±12%) followed by nurses (44%±14%) and physicians (56%±13%). In the practical knowledge the physicians showed higher percentage of correctness (50%±12%) (p<0.05); followed by nurses (44%±10%) and nursing assistants (41%±6%). In conclusion, the knowledge of blood pressure measurement was not satisfactory
Effects of energy level in finisher diets and slaughter age of on the performance and carcass yield in broiler chickens
Male broilers were used to evaluate the effects of different energy levels in finisher diets and age of slaughter on performance, production pattern and carcass yield. Experimental design was a 2x3 factorial arrangement: energy level (ME) in the finisher diet (3,200 and 3,600 kcal ME/kg) and age of slaughter (42, 49 and 56 days), resulting in six treatments with four replicates. The finisher diet was fed only in the last week of the growing period. Characteristics evaluated were feed consumption (FC), body weight gain (WG), feed conversion (FC), energy intake (EI), caloric conversion (CC), efficiency production index, production pattern, and carcass yield. The results showed better WG and CC for broilers fed 3,200 kcal ME/kg finisher diet. Broilers slaughtered at 42 and 49 days of age had better performance and higher annual production than broilers slaughtered at 56 days of age. Carcass yield was influenced by slaughter age and better breast yield was seen at 49 and 56 days than at 42 days of age. It was concluded that 3,200 kcal ME/kg induced the best overall performance. Poultry houses were efficiently used when broilers were slaughtered at 42 days of age. Meat:bone ratio was improved for broilers slaughtered at 49 and 56 days of age
