A possible cosmological application of some thermodynamic properties of the black body radiation in n−n-dimensional Euclidean spaces

In this work we present the generalization of some thermodynamic properties of the black body radiation (BBR) towards an n−n-dimensional Euclidean space. For this case the Planck function and the Stefan-Boltzmann law have already been given by Landsberg and de Vos and some adjustments by Menon and Agrawal. However, since then no much more has been done on this subject and we believe there are some relevant aspects yet to explore. In addition to the results previously found we calculate the thermodynamic potentials, the efficiency of the Carnot engine, the law for adiabatic processes and the heat capacity at constant volume. There is a region at which an interesting behavior of the thermodynamic potentials arise, maxima and minima appear for the n−dn-d BBR system at very high temperatures and low dimensionality, suggesting a possible application to cosmology. Finally we propose that an optimality criterion in a thermodynamic framework could have to do with the 3−d3-d nature of the universe.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure

Stem and immune cells in colorectal primary tumour: Number and function of subsets may diagnose metastasis

An important percentage of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients will develop metastasis, mainly in the liver, even after a successful curative resection. This leads to a very high mortality rate if metastasis is not detected early on. Disseminated cancer cells develop from metastatic stem cells (MetSCs). Recent knowledge has accumulated about these cells particularly in CRC, so they may now be tracked from the removed primary tumour. This approach could be especially important in prognosis of metastasis because it is becoming clear that metastasis does not particularly rely on testable driver mutations. Among the many traits supporting an epigenetic amplification of cell survival and self-renewal mechanisms of MetSCs, the role of many immune cell populations present in tumour tissues is becoming clear. The amount of tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes (T, B and natural killer cells), dendritic cells and some regulatory populations have already shown prognostic value or to be correlated with disease-free survival time, mainly in immunohistochemistry studies of unique cell populations. Parallel analyses of these immune cell populations together with MetSCs in the primary tumour of patients, with later follow-up data of the patients, will define the usefulness of specific combinations of both immune and MetSCs cell populations. It is expected that these combinations, together to different biomarkers in the form of an immune score, may predict future tumour recurrences, metastases and/or mortality in CRC. It will also support the future design of improved immunotherapeutic approaches against metastasisS

Radiation damping of a Yang–Mills particle revisited

    Get PDF
The problem of a colour-charged point particle interacting with a four-dimensional Yang–Mills gauge theory is revisited. The radiation damping is obtained inspired in Dirac’s computation. The difficulties in the non-abelian case were solved by using an ansatz for the Liénard–Wiechert potentials already used in the literature (Ö. Sarıoğlu. Phys. Rev. D, 66, 085005 (2002). doi:10.1103/PhysRevD.66.085005) for finding solutions to the Yang–Mills equations. Three non-trivial examples of radiation damping for a non-abelian particle are discussed in detail

Previous studies and the proposed intervention in an artistic piece is presented in this paper, in order to be studied to broaden their knowledge of Valencian painting of the eighteenth century, a period in which the piece was made. The work, female portrait of the late eighteenth century, made of canvas on frame, presents specific conservation problems because of their careless maintenance. This has required a detailed study of the Valencian painting of that time, in order to realize and bring a little more precisely the period in which it was created this piece, one aspect to unpublished date, plus a comprehensive study technical and iconographic iconológico. For proper conservation of the work are to cite a series patterns, taking into account respect for the aesthetic, historical, documentaries and functional values of the piece tested. Querol Cordero, JR. [EN] Through the discovery of a painting of origin and unknown author, we are presented the possibility of carrying out the study of the work and the attribution of a possible author. Through the combination of several studies; historical, technical, scientific and stylistically, we have tried to establish basic parameters in order to verify the authorship of the work and its conditions. We are facing a canvas attached to table with the represent ation of unprecedented Saint Jerome penitent, author unknown until today. In painting evidently it manifests the chiaroscuro of the second artistic period of the Valencian Renaissance painting of the moment side. With those obtained basic data types: formal analysis, technical and aesthetic, the tabl e is discovered from the Mannerist school postjuanesc Valencia period. Specifically forms of work reflects the Alicante painter, Fray Nicolás Borrá s ( Cocentaina 1530 - Cotalba 1610). Especially important has been the revision and bibliographical recession for an understanding of the career of the author of the work, emphasizing time spent at the Monastery of Sa i n t Jerome of Cotalba, where he came to run much of its production artistic and iconic special relationship with the work of this project. In order t o support the hypothesis and verify the authorship of the work has been carried out a detailed comparative self - citation with iconic elements of works by the same author, in addition to conducting analytical studies of painting through scientific te sts bas ed on microspecimens the woody support , intermediate layer of fabric and paint layers . Querol Cordero, JR. Purpose The objective of this study is to assess the effectiveness of a maternal exercise program (land/aquatic activities, both aerobic and muscular conditioning) in preventing gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Methods Three hundred and forty-two pregnant women from Spain (age, 33.24 ± 4.3 yr) without obstetric contraindications were recruited for a clinical randomized controlled trial. The intervention group (IG, n = 101) exercised for 60 and 50 min on land and in water, respectively, three times per week. The control group (n = 156) received usual standard care. Results The prevalence of GDM was reduced in the IG group (IG, 1%, n = 1, vs control group, 8.8%, n = 13 (χ21 = 6.84, P = 0.009)) with a significant risk estimate (odds ratio = 0.103; 95% confidence interval, 0.013-0.803). Conclusion The exercise program performed during pregnancy reduced the prevalence of GDM by preserving glucose tolerance
