Production of phi mesons at mid-rapidity in sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC
We present the first results of meson production in the K^+K^- decay channel
from Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV as measured at mid-rapidity by
the PHENIX detector at RHIC. Precision resonance centroid and width values are
extracted as a function of collision centrality. No significant variation from
the PDG accepted values is observed. The transverse mass spectra are fitted
with a linear exponential function for which the derived inverse slope
parameter is seen to be constant as a function of centrality. These data are
also fitted by a hydrodynamic model with the result that the freeze-out
temperature and the expansion velocity values are consistent with the values
previously derived from fitting single hadron inclusive data. As a function of
transverse momentum the collisions scaled peripheral.to.central yield ratio RCP
for the is comparable to that of pions rather than that of protons. This result
lends support to theoretical models which distinguish between baryons and

Population Structure as Revealed by mtDNA and Microsatellites in Northern Fur Seals, Callorhinus ursinus, throughout Their Range
Background: The northern fur seal (Callorhinus ursinus; NFS) is a widely distributed pinniped that has been shown to exhibit a high degree of philopatry to islands, breeding areas on an island, and even to specific segments of breeding areas. This level of philopatry could conceivably lead to highly genetically divergent populations. However, northern fur seals have the potential for dispersal across large distances and have experienced repeated rapid population expansions following glacial retreat and the more recent cessation of intensive harvest pressure. Methodology/Principal Findings: Using microsatellite and mitochondrial loci, we examined population structure in NFS throughout their range. We found only weak population genetic structure among breeding islands including significant FST and W ST values between eastern and western Pacific islands. Conclusions: We conclude that insufficient time since rapid population expansion events (both post glacial and following the cessation of intense harvest pressure) mixed with low levels of contemporary migration have resulted in an absence of genetic structure across the entire northern fur seal range
Transient Gastric Irritation in the Neonatal Rats Leads to Changes in Hypothalamic CRF Expression, Depression- and Anxiety-Like Behavior as Adults
A disturbance of the brain-gut axis is a prominent feature in functional bowel disorders (such as irritable bowel syndrome and functional dyspepsia) and psychological abnormalities are often implicated in their pathogenesis. We hypothesized that psychological morbidity in these conditions may result from gastrointestinal problems, rather than causing them.Functional dyspepsia was induced by neonatal gastric irritation in male rats. 10-day old male Sprague-Dawley rats received 0.1% iodoacetamide (IA) or vehicle by oral gavage for 6 days. At 8-10 weeks of age, rats were tested with sucrose preference and forced-swimming tests to examine depression-like behavior. Elevated plus maze, open field and light-dark box tests were used to test anxiety-like behaviors. ACTH and corticosterone responses to a minor stressor, saline injection, and hypothalamic CRF expression were also measured.Behavioral tests revealed changes of anxiety- and depression-like behaviors in IA-treated, but not control rats. As compared with controls, hypothalamic and amygdaloid CRF immunoreactivity, basal levels of plasma corticosterone and stress-induced ACTH were significantly higher in IA-treated rats. Gastric sensory ablation with resiniferatoxin had no effect on behaviors but treatment with CRF type 1 receptor antagonist, antalarmin, reversed the depression-like behavior in IA-treated ratsThe present results suggest that transient gastric irritation in the neonatal period can induce a long lasting increase in depression- and anxiety-like behaviors, increased expression of CRF in the hypothalamus, and an increased sensitivity of HPA axis to stress. The depression-like behavior may be mediated by the CRF1 receptor. These findings have significant implications for the pathogenesis of psychological co-morbidity in patients with functional bowel disorders
Parton distributions for the LHC run II
We present NNPDF3.0, the first set of parton distribution functions (PDFs)
determined with a methodology validated by a closure test. NNPDF3.0 uses a
global dataset including HERA-II deep-inelastic inclusive cross-sections, the
combined HERA charm data, jet production from ATLAS and CMS, vector boson
rapidity and transverse momentum distributions from ATLAS, CMS and LHCb, W+c
data from CMS and top quark pair production total cross sections from ATLAS and
CMS. Results are based on LO, NLO and NNLO QCD theory and also include
electroweak corrections. To validate our methodology, we show that PDFs
determined from pseudo-data generated from a known underlying law correctly
reproduce the statistical distributions expected on the basis of the assumed
experimental uncertainties. This closure test ensures that our methodological
uncertainties are negligible in comparison to the generic theoretical and
experimental uncertainties of PDF determination. This enables us to determine
with confidence PDFs at different perturbative orders and using a variety of
experimental datasets ranging from HERA-only up to a global set including the
latest LHC results, all using precisely the same validated methodology. We
explore some of the phenomenological implications of our results for the
upcoming 13 TeV Run of the LHC, in particular for Higgs production

J/psi production has been measured in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s)=
200 GeV over a wide rapidity and transverse momentum range by the PHENIX
experiment at RHIC. Distributions of the rapidity and transverse momentum,
along with measurements of the mean transverse momentum and total production
cross section are presented and compared to available theoretical calculations.
The total J/psi cross section is 3.99 +/- 0.61(stat) +/- 0.58(sys) +/-
0.40(abs) micro barns. The mean transverse momentum is 1.80 +/- 0.23(stat) +/-

Measurement of Single Electron Event Anisotropy in Au+Au Collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV
The transverse momentum dependence of the azimuthal anisotropy parameter v_2,
the second harmonic of the azimuthal distribution, for electrons at
mid-rapidity (|eta| < 0.35) has been measured with the PHENIX detector in Au+Au
collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV. The measurement was made with respect to
the reaction plane defined at high rapidities (|eta| = 3.1 -- 3.9). From the
result we have measured the v_2 of electrons from heavy flavor decay after
subtraction of the v_2 of electrons from other sources such as photon
conversions and Dalitz decay from light neutral mesons. We observe a non-zero

Systematic Studies of the Centrality and sqrt(s_NN) Dependence of dE_T/deta and dN_ch/deta in Heavy Ion Collisions at Mid-rapidity
The PHENIX experiment at RHIC has measured transverse energy and charged
particle multiplicity at mid-rapidity in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 19.6,
130 and 200 GeV as a function of centrality. The presented results are compared
to measurements from other RHIC experiments, and experiments at lower energies.
The sqrt(s_NN) dependence of dE_T/deta and dN_ch/deta per pair of participants
is consistent with logarithmic scaling for the most central events. The
centrality dependence of dE_T/deta and dN_ch/deta is similar at all measured
incident energies. At RHIC energies the ratio of transverse energy per charged
particle was found independent of centrality and growing slowly with
sqrt(s_NN). A survey of comparisons between the data and available theoretical

Centrality Dependence of Charm Production from Single Electrons in Au+Au Collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV
The PHENIX experiment has measured mid-rapidity transverse momentum spectra
(0.4 < p_T < 4.0 GeV/c) of single electrons as a function of centrality in
Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV. Contributions to the raw spectra from
photon conversions and Dalitz decays of light neutral mesons are measured by
introducing a thin (1.7% X_0) converter into the PHENIX acceptance and are
statistically removed. The subtracted ``non-photonic'' electron spectra are
primarily due to the semi-leptonic decays of hadrons containing heavy quarks
(charm and bottom). For all centralities, charm production is found to scale
with the nuclear overlap function, T_AA. For minimum-bias collisions the charm
cross section per binary collision is N_cc^bar/T_AA = 622 +/- 57 (stat.) +/-

The SeaQuest spectrometer at Fermilab
The SeaQuest spectrometer at Fermilab was designed to detect oppositely-charged pairs of muons (dimuons) produced by interactions between a 120 GeV proton beam and liquid hydrogen, liquid deuterium and solid nuclear targets. The primary physics program uses the Drell–Yan process to probe antiquark distributions in the target nucleon. The spectrometer consists of a target system, two dipole magnets and four detector stations. The upstream magnet is a closed-aperture solid iron magnet which also serves as the beam dump, while the second magnet is an open aperture magnet. Each of the detector stations consists of scintillator hodoscopes and a high-resolution tracking device. The FPGA-based trigger compares the hodoscope signals to a set of pre-programmed roads to determine if the event contains oppositely-signed, high-mass muon pairs
