Los retos de la humanidad ante la perspectiva de 2050 y los bosques

[EN] The key global challenges as identified during the Rio+20 Summit (food, energy and climate change) are analyzed and correspondent answers developed. The role of forests in this context is discussed. The possible accommodation of forests in the sustainable development goals to be approved in 2015 as successors of the present millennium development goals is analyzed. Sustainability as a forest cultural legacy defined first by Carlowitz in 1713 is highlighted. Finally emerging forest issues are discussed like the role of semi-natural and dry forests, forests in the international forest regime, forest governance and forest communication. 2015 is presented as a key international year where several crucial international processes coincide.[ES] Se analizan los principales retos globales identificados en la Cumbre Río+20 (alimentación, energía y cambio climático) y se desarrollan las correspondientes respuestas. Seguidamente se discute el rol de los bosques en este contexto. Se avanza cual podría ser el anclaje de los bosques en los objetivos de desarrollo sostenible que se aprobarán en 2015 como substitutos a los objetivos de desarrollo del milenio. Se recuerda el legado forestal del principio de sostenibilidad definido en 1713 por primera vez por Carlowitz. Finalmente se analizan temas forestales emergentes como los bosques semi-naturales, los bosques secos, el régimen forestal internacional, la gobernanza forestal y la comunicación forestal para finalizar identificando 2015 como un año clave en la agenda internacional.Rojas Briales, E. The role of research in global food and nutrition security

The present discussion document gives an overview of where European research can add the most value in relation to tackling food and nutrition security challenges and points to areas where we can expand our research potential. Moreover, it highlights the need to develop a governance structure that will allow sharing of best practices and facilitate the transfer of knowledge and innovation to feed the planet sustainably. Are environmental services and bio-economy antagonist?

Environmental services were at the core of the birth of forest science as the linkage to water and watershed shows even in the name of the Faculties and profession, especially in the Alpine and Mediterranean countries. The wake-theory (Dietrich 1953) recognized the relevance of environmental services but understood them automatically covered by a sustained yield conventional forestry. During the late 70s and following 3 decades, environmental services from forests, especially biodiversity and climate change, gain attention and it was evident that the low cost option of the wake theory eroded due to the fact that society wished a higher level of environmental services and increasingly extended areas of forests lost any profitability based on wood use

La política de conservación de la naturaleza y el paisaje de la República Federal de Alemania es fruto de una larga experiencia y se beneficia de la racionalidad del derecho germánico y del funcionamiento ejemplar de sus instituciones. La base de su éxito se encuentra en su integración y armonización con otras políticas concurrentes y en la clara delimitación de competencias. Se trata de mantener en su aplicación, el principio de responsabilidad primaria sectorial de las respectivas Administraciones, evitándose divisiones territoriales aleatorias o conflictivas responsabilidades compartidas
