    Incidence of Guillain-Barre syndrome among patients with Campylobacter infection: A general practice research database study

    The association between Campylobacter infection and subsequent Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) has been well documented. To date, however, there exists no direct estimate of the incidence of GBS among patients with Campylobacter infection. Using the General Practice Research Database, we estimate the incidence of GBS in a cohort of patients presenting with Campylobacter enteritis to be 1.17/1000 person-years, a rate 77 times greater than that in the general population. The probability that an individual who develops Campylobacter enteritis will also develop GBS during the subsequent 2-month period is < 2/10,000

    The runaway black hole GRO J1655-40

    We have used the Hubble Space Telescope to measure the motion in the sky and compute the galactocentric orbit of the black hole X-ray binary GRO J1655-40. The system moves with a runaway space velocity of 112±18112\pm 18 km s1^{-1} in a highly eccentric (e=0.34±0.05e = 0.34\pm 0.05) orbit. The black hole was formed in the disk at a distance greater than 3 kpc from the Galactic centre and must have been shot to such an eccentric orbit by the explosion of the progenitor star. The runaway linear momentum and kinetic energy of this black hole binary are comparable to those of solitary neutron stars and millisecond pulsars. GRO J1655-40 is the first black hole for which there is evidence for a runaway motion imparted by a natal kick in a supernova explosion.Comment: Published in Astronomy and Astrophysics. 5 pages, 2 color figures.     Transitions of care management in CKD: critical thinking and improving strategies

    Chronic kidney disease (CKD) has a high clinical and socioeconomic impact and is often associated with multimorbidity. Improved treatment has allowed an increase in patient survival, but patient life expectancy remains limited. The disease course has a continuum of lesion, stage and treatment transitions. The focus is often placed on treatment modality, disregarding the course of a CKD patient’s disease. In addition, patient management in transitions of modalities of renal replacement therapy (RRT) can also be a vector for improving clinical outcomes. The transition between different types of CKD treatment and the transition of care from paediatric to adult team are critical processes throughout the life of a CKD patient. In the therapeutic transition, there is the need to identify better predictors of success in allocating patients with stage 5 CKD to their first dialytic modality in. There is a risk of early mortality in the induction period of dialysis, particularly of the elderly in extracorporeal dialysis regimens. Doubt remains in decision making about the ideal timing to establish the transition to renal replacement therapy and its most appropriate type. Transfer between dialytic modalities also calls for opportune and integrated policies protecting vascular resources. Renal transplantation is considered the optimal renal replacement therapy; however, transplant failure or the side effects of immunosuppression are threats to consider, which may redirect these patients back to dialysis and involves a re‑evaluation of the patient’s status. Also, end‑of‑life care and decision making between initiating renal replacement therapy or maintaining conservative management are a challenge in the elderly. This review identifies the main challenges in these transitional processes, raising awareness of areas in need of improvement in patient care.     Photometry and dynamics of the minor mergers AM\,1228-260 and AM\,2058-381

    We investigate interaction effects on the dynamics and morphology of the galaxy pairs AM\,2058-381 and AM\,1228-260. This work is based on rr' images and long-slit spectra obtained with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph at the Gemini South Telescope. The luminosity ratio between the main (AM\,2058A) and secondary (AM\,2058B) components of the first pair is a factor of \sim 5, while for the other pair, the main (AM\,1228A) component is 20 times more luminous than the secondary (AM\,1228B). The four galaxies have pseudo-bulges, with a S\'ersic index n<2n<2. Their observed radial velocities profiles (RVPs) present several irregularities. The receding side of the RVP of AM\,2058A is displaced with respect to the velocity field model, while there is a strong evidence that AM\,2058B is a tumbling body, rotating along its major axis. The RVPs for AM\,1228A indicate a misalignment between the kinematic and photometric major axes. The RVP for AM\,1228B is quite perturbed, very likely due to the interaction with AM\,1228A. NFW halo parameters for AM\,2058A are similar to those of the Milky Way and M\,31. The halo mass of AM\,1228A is roughly 10\% that of AM\,2058A. The mass-to-light (M/L) of AM\,2058 agrees with the mean value derived for late-type spirals, while the low M/L for AM\,1228A may be due to the intense star formation ongoing in this galaxy.Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
