Logic Negation with Spiking Neural P Systems

Nowadays, the success of neural networks as reasoning systems is doubtless. Nonetheless, one of the drawbacks of such reasoning systems is that they work as black-boxes and the acquired knowledge is not human readable. In this paper, we present a new step in order to close the gap between connectionist and logic based reasoning systems. We show that two of the most used inference rules for obtaining negative information in rule based reasoning systems, the so-called Closed World Assumption and Negation as Finite Failure can be characterized by means of spiking neural P systems, a formal model of the third generation of neural networks born in the framework of membrane computing.Comment: 25 pages, 1 figur

    Get PDF

Rapid authentication and composition determination of cellulose films by UV-VIS-NIR spectroscopy

    Get PDF
In recent years, efforts to develop new materials for the food industry have focused mainly on polysaccharides- and proteins-based films or coatings. Fast and inexpensive analytical tools are needed to guarantee their compositions. This work evaluates the feasibility of a rapid and accurate method based on UV-VIS-NIR spectroscopy combined with chemometric techniques to analyze polysaccharide-based films for authentication and composition determination. As case study, cellulose-based films (vegetable and bacterial) combined with chitosan and polyvinyl alcohol were used as biocomposite models. Applying chemometric techniques, it was obtained models to predict the content of chitosan, polyvinyl alcohol and cellulose. Linear discriminant analysis was used to authenticate cellulose films, showing an accuracy of 100% to classify cellulose films as function on the cellulose source (vegetable or bacterial). It was concluded that UV-VIS-NIR spectroscopy combined with chemometrics can be used to authenticate the origin and determine the composition of polysaccharide-based filmsS

The TetraNauta project is a low cost, fully open steering system to allow people with heavy motor impairments to move in a known environments (hospitals, schools, home, etc.). It minimizes the steering effort, especially in long paths, while caring for user safety. Every TetraNauta wheelchair has a general map of the environment wherein it navigates in automatic mode. It also knows its actual position in the map using on-board sensors that detect absolute positioning marks. The system consists of a traffic management subsystem and wheelchair motion control subsystem. Virtual potential fields as a tool for implementing automatic guidance in the intelligent electric wheelchair are considere

In vitro effect of ceftazidime-avibactam pressure on ceftazidime-avibactam resistance in KPC-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae clinical isolates.

Motivation: Infections caused by KPC-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae represent a challenge due to the limited available treatement choices. In this context, ceftazidime-avibactam (CAZ-AVI) is postulated as an alternative treatment effective against class A beta-lactamases such as KPC [1]. But, recent data reported the failure of CAZ-AVI treatment of infections by KPC-producing K. pneumoniae due to the development of CAZ-AVI resistance [2]. However, little is known concernig the CAZ-AVI resistance developement by CAZ-AVI selective pressure. Here, we aimed to determinate in vitro whether the exposure of KPC-producing K. pneumoniae clinical isolates to CAZ-AVI subinhibitory concentrations could lead the selection of CAZ-AVI resistant isolates. Methods: Seventeen KPC-producing K. pneumoniae clinical isolates (7 KPC-2, 9 KPC-3 and 1 KPC-11) were analyzed. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of CAZ-AVI were determined by broth microdilution using a fixed AVI cocentration of 4 mg/L [3]. Moreover, these isolates were further exposed to increasing concentrations of CAZ and fixed 4 mg/L of AVI, from a sub-MIC up to 256/4 mg/L of CAZ-AVI (or the concentration able to kill the bacterial isolate) at 37ºC with shaking during 24h. New MICs to CAZ-AVI were determined in each condition and after 15 days without CAZ-AVI pressure. Therefore, in order to demonstrated that blaKPC gene is responsible for acquisition of CAZ-AVI resistance in KPC-producing K. pneumoniae, blaKPC-2 and blaKPC-3 were cloned into a reference K. pneumoniae CECT 997 strain. Resistance or susceptibility were determined according to EUCAST criteria [3]. Results: All (17/17, 100%) KPC-producing K. pneumoniae isolates were able to grow at high concentrations of CAZ-AVI (≥64/4 mg/L), increasing their resistance to CAZ-AVI ≥8-fold. Likewise, fifteen of the 17 (88.2%) resistant isolates maintained the acquired CAZ-AVI resistance 15 days after without CAZ-AVI pressure. In addition, the CECT 997 mutants with blaKPC-2 or blaKPC-3 were able to grow up to 256/4 mg/L of CAZ-AVI, displaying and maintaining CAZ-AVI MIC shift from <0.01/4 mg/L (susceptible) to 512/4 mg/L (resistant). Conclusions: These data suggest that exposure of KPC-producing K. pneumoniae to subinhibitory CAZ-AVI concentrations could lead to the selection of CAZ-AVI resistance and this resistance is stable over the time

Effectiveness of Percutaneous Electrolysis in Supraspinatus Tendinopathy: A Single-Blinded Randomized Controlled Trial

    Get PDF
Supraspinatus tendinopathy is one of the most common causes of shoulder pain. Many studies support conservative treatments such as exercise, trigger point dry needling or corticosteroid injections. Otherwise, a minimally invasive approach with percutaneous electrolysis (PE) has also been used successfully in shoulder pain, although evidence about its long-term effects is scarce. The aim of this trial was to determine the effects of PE on supraspinatus tendinopathy compared with trigger point dry needling (TDN). Thirty-six patients with supraspinatus tendinopathy were randomly assigned to either a PE group (n=18) or a TDN group (n=18). Both groups also performed eccentric exercises. The main outcome to be measured was the Numerical Pain Rating Scale (NPRS), but the shoulder range of motion (ROM) and trigger point pressure pain threshold (PPT) were also considered. A one-year follow-up was conducted. Significant differences favoring the PE group were found regarding pain at one-year follow-up (p=0.002). The improvement achieved in the PE group was greater in the NPRS (p<0.001), proximal PPT, middle PPT, distal PPT (all p<0.001) and ranges of movement. PE seems to be more effective than TDN in relieving pain and improving ROM and PPT supraspinatus values in patients with supraspinatus tendinopathy, both right after treatment and at one-year follow-up

The compositional HJ-Biplot—A new approach to identifying the links among bioactive compounds of tomatoes

    Get PDF
Tomatoes have been described as a functional food because of their particular composition of different bioactive compounds. In this study, the proximate composition, minerals and trace elements, and antioxidant compounds were determined in two tomato cultivars (Mariana and Dunkan) that were grown in Gran Canaria (Spain) either conventionally or hydroponically. Although compositional data of this type require being subjected to the specific statistical techniques of compositional analysis, this approach has not usually been considered in this context. In the present case, a compositional Mann–Whitney U test of the data showed significant differences for each factor (cultivar and cultivation system) in several of the compositional variables studied. For the differences between cultivars, these parameters were the protein, Mg, lycopene, ascorbic acid, citric acid, and fumaric acid contents. For the differences between cultivation systems, they were mainly those of the mineral and trace elements group. Although one-year data are insufficient to make clear relationship among compounds because more repetitions in several localities and years are necessary, the compositional HJ-biplot (in which the links provide estimates of the linear relationship among variables) results agreed with other scientific results about linear relationship among some compounds analyzed.peerReviewe

A Dynamic Equilibrium View of Caching Systems

    Get PDF
In this paper, we present a simple analytical study of caching systems based on the idea of dynamic equilibrium of cache blocks, assuming the Independent Reference Model (IRM) of references. This method allows us to obtain simple closedform expressions for parameters that are usually excluded from cache studies, such as the mean number of reads or writes per cache block while in the cache. We finally present some simulation results in order to validate the analysis.Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia TIN2006-15617- C03-03Junta de Andalucía P06-TIC-229
