Inelastic Quantum Transport and Peierls-like Mechanism in Carbon Nanotubes
We report on a theoretical study of inelastic quantum transport in
carbon nanotubes. By using a many-body description of the electron-phonon
interaction in Fock space, a novel mechanism involving optical phonon emission
(absorption) is shown to induce an unprecedented energy gap opening at half the
phonon energy, , above (below) the charge neutrality point.
This mechanism, which is prevented by Pauli blocking at low bias voltages, is
activated at bias voltages in the order of .Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Fingerprints of Inelastic Transport at the Surface of the Topological Insulator Bi2Se3: Role of Electron-Phonon Coupling
We report on electric-field and temperature dependent transport measurements
in exfoliated thin crystals of BiSe topological insulator. At low
temperatures ( K) and when the chemical potential lies inside the bulk
gap, the crystal resistivity is strongly temperature dependent, reflecting
inelastic scattering due to the thermal activation of optical phonons. A linear
increase of the current with voltage is obtained up to a threshold value at
which current saturation takes place. We show that the activated behavior, the
voltage threshold and the saturation current can all be quantitatively
explained by considering a single optical phonon mode with energy meV. This phonon mode strongly interacts with the surface states of
the material and represents the dominant source of scattering at the surface at

Carrier drift velocity and edge magnetoplasmons in graphene
We investigate electron dynamics at the graphene edge by studying the
propagation of collective edge magnetoplasmon (EMP) excitations. By timing the
travel of narrow wave-packets on picosecond time scales around exfoliated
samples, we find chiral propagation with low attenuation at a velocity which is
quantized on Hall plateaus. We extract the carrier drift contribution from the
EMP propagation and find it to be slightly less than the Fermi velocity, as
expected for an abrupt edge. We also extract the characteristic length for
Coulomb interaction at the edge and find it to be smaller than for soft,

Re-parameterization Invariance in Fractional Flux Periodicity
We analyze a common feature of a nontrivial fractional flux periodicity in
two-dimensional systems. We demonstrate that an addition of fractional flux can
be absorbed into re-parameterization of quantum numbers. For an exact
fractional periodicity, all the electronic states undergo the
re-parameterization, whereas for an approximate periodicity valid in a large
system, only the states near the Fermi level are involved in the

9.7 um Silicate Features in AGNs: New Insights into Unification Models
We describe observations of 9.7 um silicate features in 97 AGNs, exhibiting a
wide range of AGN types and of X-ray extinction toward the central nuclei. We
find that the strength of the silicate feature correlates with the HI column
density estimated from fitting the X-ray data, such that low HI columns
correspond to silicate emission while high columns correspond to silicate
absorption. The behavior is generally consistent with unification models where
the large diversity in AGN properties is caused by viewing-angle-dependent
obscuration of the nucleus. Radio-loud AGNs and radio-quiet quasars follow
roughly the correlation between HI columns and the strength of the silicate
feature defined by Seyfert galaxies. The agreement among AGN types suggests a
high-level unification with similar characteristics for the structure of the
obscuring material. We demonstrate the implications for unification models
qualitatively with a conceptual disk model. The model includes an inner
accretion disk (< 0.1 pc in radius), a middle disk (0.1-10 pc in radius) with a
dense diffuse component and with embedded denser clouds, and an outer clumpy

Experimental Test of the High-Frequency Quantum Shot Noise Theory in a Quantum Point Contact
We report on direct measurements of the electronic shot noise of a quantum
point contact at frequencies nu in the range 4-8 GHz. The very small energy
scale used ensures energy independent transmissions of the few transmitted
electronic modes and their accurate knowledge. Both the thermal energy and the
quantum point contact drain-source voltage Vds are comparable to the photon
energy hnu leading to observation of the shot noise suppression when
. Our measurements provide the first complete test of the finite

The discovery of the optical/IR counterpart of the 12s transient X-ray pulsar GS 0834-43
We report the discovery of the optical/infra-red counterpart of the 12.3s
transient X-ray pulsar GS0834-43. We re-analysed archival ROSAT PSPC
observations of GS0834-43, obtaining two new refined positions, about 14" and
18" away from the previously published one, and a new spin period measurement.
Within the new error circles we found a relatively faint (V=20.1) early type
reddened star (V-R=2.24). The optical spectrum shows a strong Halpha emission
line. The IR observations of the field confirm the presence of an IR excess for
the Halpha-emitting star (K'=11.4, J-K'=1.94) which is likely surrounded by a
conspicuous circumstellar envelope. Spectroscopic and photometric data indicate
a B0-2 V-IIIe spectral-type star located at a distance of 3-5kpc and confirm
the Be-star/X-ray binary nature of GS0834-43.Comment: 6 pages. Accepted for publication in MNRA

Revealing the active galactic nucleus in the superantennae through L-band spectroscopy
We present an L-band spectrum of the Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxy IRAS
19254-7245 (the Superantennae), obtained with VLT-ISAAC. The high signal to
noise ratio allows a study of the main spectral features with unprecedented
detail for an extragalactic source. We argue that the main energy source in the
IR is an obscured AGN. This is indicated by the low equivalent width of the 3.3
micron PAH feature, the broad absorption feature at 3.4 um, and the steep
continuum at lambda>3.7 um (f_lambda ~lambda^(2.7)). The substructure of the
3.4 um absorption feature indicates that the absorption is due to hydrocarbon

Spanish validation of the revised depression attitude questionnaire (R-daq)
Purpose: The aim of the study was to develop and validate a Spanish version of the Revised Depression Attitude Questionnaire (R-DAQ). Methods: The R-DAQ was used as a baseline for the study. It was translated and tested to ensure the instrument was appropriate for the target population. 537 Ecuadorian healthcare professionals completed the revised Spanish version of the R-DAQ (SR-DAQ). Statistical and exploratory factor analyses were performed to examine construct validity, internal consistency, readability and floor and ceiling effects. Results: Three factors were obtained: “Professional confidence in depression care”; “Therapeutic optimism about depression”; and “Generalist perspective about depression occurrence, recognition, and management”. The internal consistency of the SR-DAQ was determined by means of Cronbach’s α coefficient, with values ranging between 0.61–0.8. The correlations with the English version reflected adequate validity. The model explained 39% of the variance. Subsequent analysis with a sample restricted to those who had received training in depression produced a model that explained 42% of the variance. Conclusion: The SR-DAQ meets the psychometric requirements for measuring depression attitude in a Spanish-speaking population and shows adequate internal consistency and validity
