Enhancing single-parameter quantum charge pumping in carbon-based devices

We present a theoretical study of quantum charge pumping with a single ac gate applied to graphene nanoribbons and carbon nanotubes operating with low resistance contacts. By combining Floquet theory with Green's function formalism, we show that the pumped current can be tuned and enhanced by up to two orders of magnitude by an appropriate choice of device length, gate voltage intensity and driving frequency and amplitude. These results offer a promising alternative for enhancing the pumped currents in these carbon-based devices.Comment: 3.5 pages, 2 figure

Variations of the Energy of Free Particles in the pp-Wave Spacetimes

We consider the action of exact plane gravitational waves, or pp-waves, on free particles. The analysis is carried out by investigating the variations of the geodesic trajectories of the particles, before and after the passage of the wave. The initial velocities of the particles are non-vanishing. We evaluate numerically the Kinetic energy per unit mass of the free particles, and obtain interesting, quasi-periodic behaviour of the variations of the Kinetic energy with respect to the width λ\lambda of the gaussian that represents the wave. The variation of the energy of the free particle is expected to be exactly minus the variation of the energy of the gravitational field, and therefore provides an estimation of the local variation of the gravitational energy. The investigation is carried out in the context of short bursts of gravitational waves, and of waves described by normalised gaussians, that yield impulsive waves in a certain limit.Comment: 20 pages, 18 figures, further arguments supporting the localizability of the gravitational energy are presented, published in Univers

The silicon stable isotope distribution along the GEOVIDE section (GEOTRACES GA-01) of the North Atlantic Ocean

The stable isotope composition of dissolved silicon in seawater (δ30SiDSi) was examined at 10 stations along the GEOVIDE section (GEOTRACES GA-01), spanning the North Atlantic Ocean (40–60∘ N) and Labrador Sea. Variations in δ30SiDSi below 500 m were closely tied to the distribution of water masses. Higher δ30SiDSi values are associated with intermediate and deep water masses of northern Atlantic or Arctic Ocean origin, whilst lower δ30SiDSi values are associated with DSi-rich waters sourced ultimately from the Southern Ocean. Correspondingly, the lowest δ30SiDSi values were observed in the deep and abyssal eastern North Atlantic, where dense southern-sourced waters dominate. The extent to which the spreading of water masses influences the δ30SiDSi distribution is marked clearly by Labrador Sea Water (LSW), whose high δ30SiDSi signature is visible not only within its region of formation within the Labrador and Irminger seas, but also throughout the mid-depth western and eastern North Atlantic Ocean. Both δ30SiDSi and hydrographic parameters document the circulation of LSW into the eastern North Atlantic, where it overlies southern-sourced Lower Deep Water. The GEOVIDE δ30SiDSi distribution thus provides a clear view of the direct interaction between subpolar/polar water masses of northern and southern origin, and allow examination of the extent to which these far-field signals influence the local δ30SiDSi distribution

Bromeliaceae species from coastal restinga habitats, Brazilian states of Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo, and Bahia.

Bromeliaceae is one of the most representative plant families in restinga habitats. We analyzed the speciesrichness and composition of Bromeliaceae in 13 restinga habitats along the Brazilian coast. We found a total of 41species distributed along the restinga habitats studied. The restinga of Praia do Sul, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, hadthe highest number of species (15), whereas the restinga of Abaeté, in the state of Bahia, had the lowest (4). Our dataare suggestive that the Doce River may represent the limit of distribution for some bromeliad species, with some speciesoccurring only south of that river and others occurring only to the north of it. The differences in Bromeliaceae speciescomposition among restinga habitats probably are not only due to differences in local environmental conditions, butalso due to the geographic distribution pattern of each species and to the present degree of disturbance at each restinga

Upper bound for the conductivity of nanotube networks

Films composed of nanotube networks have their conductivities regulated by the junction resistances formed between tubes. Conductivity values are enhanced by lower junction resistances but should reach a maximum that is limited by the network morphology. By considering ideal ballistic-like contacts between nanotubes we use the Kubo formalism to calculate the upper bound for the conductivity of such films and show how it depends on the nanotube concentration as well as on their aspect ratio. Highest measured conductivities reported so far are approaching this limiting value, suggesting that further progress lies with nanowires other than nanotubes.Comment: 3 pages, 1 figure.

Immune complex induced arthritis in rats: role of lipid mediators on cell infiltration

    Get PDF
We investigated the participation of lipid mediators in an experimental immune complex (IC) arthritis model in rats. The animals were subjected to intraarticular injection of anti-bovine sertLm albumin (BSA) IgG antibodies followed by i.v. injection of BSA. Histopathological analysis of the synovial membranes disclosed infiltration of polymorphonuclear (PMN) cells and vascular congestion. Slight increase in vascular permeability, measured by Evans blue dye extravasation into the joints, was detected after 3 h of arthritis. Cellular influx into the articular cavities was most evident at the sixth hour of arthritis with predominance of PMN. Pretreatment with either indomethacin, a cyclooxygenase inhibitor, or L-660,711, a peptido-leukotriene antagonist, did not inhibit cell infiltration, whereas pretreatment with either L-663,536, a 5-lipoxygenase inhibitor, or L-655,240, a thromboxane antagonist, significantly inhibited the phenomenon. Pretreatment with WEB 2170, a platelet activating factor (PAF) antagonist, also significantly inhibited cell influx. These results suggest that thromboxane, LTB4 and PAF mediate cell infiltration in this IC arthritis model
