On the Gibbs states of the noncritical Potts model on Z^2
We prove that all Gibbs states of the q-state nearest neighbor Potts model on
Z^2 below the critical temperature are convex combinations of the q pure
phases; in particular, they are all translation invariant. To achieve this
goal, we consider such models in large finite boxes with arbitrary boundary
condition, and prove that the center of the box lies deeply inside a pure phase
with high probability. Our estimate of the finite-volume error term is of
essentially optimal order, which stems from the Brownian scaling of fluctuating
interfaces. The results hold at any supercritical value of the inverse

Current practices in managing acutely disturbed patients at three hospitals in Rio de Janeiro-Brazil: a prevalence study
BACKGROUND: The medical management of aggressive and violent behaviour is a critical situation for which there is little evidence. In order to prepare for a randomised trial, due to start in the psychiatric emergency rooms of Rio de Janeiro in 2001, a survey of current practice was necessary. METHODS: A seven day survey of pharmacological management of aggressive people with psychosis in the emergency rooms of all four public psychiatric hospitals in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. RESULTS: In one hospital data were not available. Of the 764 people with psychosis attending these ERs, 74 were given IM medication for rapid tranquillisation (9.7%, 2.1/week/100,000). A haloperidol-promethazine mix (with or without other drugs) was used for the majority of patients (83%). CONCLUSION: The haloperidol-promethazine mix, given intramuscularly for rapid tranquilization, is prevalent in Rio, where it is considered both safe and efficient. However, scientific evaluation of all pharmacological approaches to rapid tranquilization of psychotic people is inadequate or incomplete and a randomized trial of IM haloperidol-promethazine is overdue
Using data linkage to electronic patient records to assess the validity of selected mental health diagnoses in English Hospital Episode Statistics (HES)
<div><p>Background</p><p>Administrative data can be used to support research, such as in the UK Biobank. Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) are national data for England that include contain ICD-10 diagnoses for inpatient mental healthcare episodes, but the validity of these diagnoses for research purposes has not been assessed.</p><p>Methods</p><p>250 peoples' HES records were selected based on a HES recorded inpatient stay at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust with a diagnosis of schizophrenia, a wider schizophrenia spectrum disorder, bipolar affective disorder or unipolar depression. A gold-standard research diagnosis was made using Clinical Records Interactive Search pseudonymised electronic patient records using, and the OPCRIT+ algorithm.</p><p>Results</p><p>Positive predictive value at the level of lifetime psychiatric disorder was 100%, and at the level of lifetime diagnosis in the four categories of schizophrenia, wider schizophrenia spectrum, bipolar or unipolar depression was 73% (68–79). Agreement varied by diagnosis, with schizophrenia having the highest PPV at 90% (80–96). Each person had an average of five psychiatric HES records. An algorithm that looked at the last recorded psychiatric diagnosis led to greatest overall agreement with the research diagnosis.</p><p>Discussion</p><p>For people who have a HES record from a psychiatric admission with a diagnosis of schizophrenia spectrum disorder, bipolar affective disorder or unipolar depression, HES records appear to be a good indicator of a mental disorder, and can provide a diagnostic category with reasonable certainty. For these diagnoses, HES records can be an effective way of ascertaining psychiatric diagnosis.</p></div
Natural carriers for application in tuberculosis treatment
Tuberculosis remains the leading cause of preventable deaths worldwide and unsuccessful therapy is mainly due to non-compliance with very prolonged treatments,
often associated with severe side-effects. Overcoming this problem demands the
introduction of drug carriers releasing the antimicrobial agents in a targeted and
sustained manner, allowing reduction in frequency and dosing numbers. Nano and
microparticles have taken the forefront of this approach, providing the means for the
desired improvement of therapeutic schedules. Natural polymers are strong candidates as matrix forming materials, usually exhibiting biocompatibility, biodegradability, low cost and some technological advantages as compared with synthetic counterparts. In this review, natural particulate carriers developed for tuberculosis therapy are presented,
mainly focusing on the use of polysaccharides and lipids. Their effectiveness is discussed taking into account their composition. Finally, considerations on the general potential of natural materials for this application, as well as key factors still to be addressed, are discussed
Gene expression profiling and histopathological characterization of triple-negative/basal-like breast carcinomas
INTRODUCTION: Breast cancer is a heterogeneous group of tumors, and can be subdivided on the basis of histopathological features, genetic alterations and gene-expression profiles. One well-defined subtype of breast cancer is characterized by a lack of HER2 gene amplification and estrogen and progesterone receptor expression ('triple-negative tumors'). We examined the histopathological and gene-expression profile of triple-negative tumors to define subgroups with specific characteristics, including risk of developing distant metastases. METHODS: 97 triple-negative tumors were selected from the fresh-frozen tissue bank of the Netherlands Cancer Institute, and gene-expression profiles were generated using 35K oligonucleotide microarrays. In addition, histopathological and immunohistochemical characterization was performed, and the findings were associated to clinical features. RESULTS : All triple-negative tumors were classified as basal-like tumors on the basis of their overall gene-expression profile. Hierarchical cluster analysis revealed five distinct subgroups of triple-negative breast cancers. Multivariable analysis showed that a large amount of lymphocytic infiltrate (HR = 0.30, 95% CI 0.09-0.96) and absence of central fibrosis in the tumors (HR = 0.14, 95% CI 0.03-0.62) were associated with distant metastasis-free survival. CONCLUSION: Triple-negative tumors are synonymous with basal-like tumors, and can be identified by immunohistochemistry. Based on gene-expression profiling, basal-like tumors are still heterogeneous and can be subdivided into at least five distinct subgroups. Conserved and highly expressed tRNA derived fragments in zebrafish
Background: Small non-coding RNAs (sncRNAs) are a class of transcripts implicated in several eukaryotic regulatory
mechanisms, namely gene silencing and chromatin regulation. Despite significant progress in their identification by
next generation sequencing (NGS) we are still far from understanding their full diversity and functional repertoire.
Results: Here we report the identification of tRNA derived fragments (tRFs) by NGS of the sncRNA fraction of
zebrafish. The tRFs identified are 18–30 nt long, are derived from specific 5′ and 3′ processing of mature tRNAs and
are differentially expressed during development and in differentiated tissues, suggesting that they are likely produced by specific processing rather than random degradation of tRNAs. We further show that a highly expressed tRF
(5′tRF-ProCGG) is cleaved in vitro by Dicer and has silencing ability, indicating that it can enter the RNAi pathway. A
computational analysis of zebrafish tRFs shows that they are conserved among vertebrates and mining of publicly
available datasets reveals that some 5′tRFs are differentially expressed in disease conditions, namely during infection
and colorectal cancer.
Conclusions: tRFs constitute a class of conserved regulatory RNAs in vertebrates and may be involved in mechanisms of genome regulation and in some diseases.

Multilocus genotyping reveals high heterogeneity and strong local population structure of the Plasmodium vivax population in the Peruvian Amazon
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Peru is one of the Latin American countries with the highest malaria burden, mainly due to <it>Plasmodium vivax </it>infections. However, little is known about <it>P. vivax </it>transmission dynamics in the Peruvian Amazon, where most malaria cases occur. The genetic diversity and population structure of <it>P. vivax </it>isolates collected in different communities around Iquitos city, the capital of the Peruvian Amazon, was determined.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p><it>Plasmodium vivax </it>population structure was determined by multilocus genotyping with 16 microsatellites on 159 <it>P. vivax </it>infected blood samples (mono-infections) collected in four sites around Iquitos city. The population characteristics were assessed only in samples with monoclonal infections (n = 94), and the genetic diversity was determined by calculating the expected heterozygosity and allelic richness. Both linkage disequilibrium and the genetic differentiation (<it>θ</it>) were estimated.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The proportion of polyclonal infections varied substantially by site (11% - 70%), with the expected heterozygosity ranging between 0.44 and 0.69; no haplotypes were shared between the different populations. Linkage disequilibrium was present in all populations (<it>I</it><sub>A</sub><sup>S </sup>0.14 - 0.61) but was higher in those with fewer polyclonal infections, suggesting inbreeding and a clonal population structure. Strong population differentiation (<it>θ </it>= 0.45) was found and the Bayesian inference cluster analysis identified six clusters based on distinctive allele frequencies.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The <it>P. vivax </it>populations circulating in the Peruvian Amazon basin are genetically diverse, strongly differentiated and they have a low effective recombination rate. These results are in line with the low and clustered pattern of malaria transmission observed in the region around Iquitos city.</p
