Servant leadership as a driver of employee service performance: Test of a trickle-down model and its boundary conditions
Previous research has demonstrated the role of servant leadership, a leadership style emphasizing serving others, in promoting frontline employeesβ service performance. It is unclear, however, how servant leadership by leaders at different organizational levels would exert such an influence. Integrating insights from both social learning theory and the trickle-down paradigm of leadership, we develop a cross-level model in which we argue that servant leadership by high-level managers could cascade downward through the organizational hierarchy to influence frontline employeesβ service performance and that this trickle-down effect is contingent on the extent to which subordinates identify their leaders as embodying the organization. Using a matched sample of 92 supervisors and 568 frontline employees across 92 sub-branches of a large banking company, we found that servant leadership by high-level managers could indeed promote employeesβ in-role and extra-role service performance through its effect on low-level supervisorsβ servant leadership. We also found that this trickle-down effect was stronger when high-level managers and low-level supervisors were perceived by their subordinates as more fully embodying the organization. Implications, limitations and future directions are discussed
Focusing: coming to the point in metamaterials
The point of the paper is to show some limitations of geometrical optics in
the analysis of subwavelength focusing. We analyze the resolution of the image
of a line source radiating in the Maxwell fisheye and the Veselago-Pendry slab
lens. The former optical medium is deduced from the stereographic projection of
a virtual sphere and displays a heterogeneous refractive index n(r) which is
proportional to the inverse of 1+r^2. The latter is described by a homogeneous,
but negative, refractive index. It has been suggested that the fisheye makes a
perfect lens without negative refraction [Leonhardt, Philbin
arxiv:0805.4778v2]. However, we point out that the definition of
super-resolution in such a heterogeneous medium should be computed with respect
to the wavelength in a homogenized medium, and it is perhaps more adequate to
talk about a conjugate image rather than a perfect image (the former does not
necessarily contains the evanescent components of the source). We numerically
find that both the Maxwell fisheye and a thick silver slab lens lead to a
resolution close to lambda/3 in transverse magnetic polarization (electric
field pointing orthogonal to the plane). We note a shift of the image plane in
the latter lens. We also observe that two sources lead to multiple secondary
images in the former lens, as confirmed from light rays travelling along
geodesics of the virtual sphere. We further observe resolutions ranging from
lambda/2 to nearly lambda/4 for magnetic dipoles of varying orientations of
dipole moments within the fisheye in transverse electric polarization (magnetic
field pointing orthogonal to the plane). Finally, we analyse the Eaton lens for
which the source and its image are either located within a unit disc of air, or
within a corona 1<r<2 with refractive index . In both cases,

Controlling surface plasmon polaritons in transformed coordinates
Transformational optics allow for a markedly enhanced control of the
electromagnetic wave trajectories within metamaterials with interesting
applications ranging from perfect lenses to invisibility cloaks, carpets,
concentrators and rotators. Here, we present a review of curved anisotropic
heterogeneous meta-surfaces designed using the tool of transformational
plasmonics, in order to achieve a similar control for surface plasmon
polaritons in cylindrical and conical carpets, as well as cylindrical cloaks,
concentrators and rotators of a non-convex cross-section. Finally, we provide
an asymptotic form of the geometric potential for surface plasmon polaritons on
such surfaces in the limit of small curvature.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figure
The Servant Leadership Survey: Development and Validation of a Multidimensional Measure
Purpose:
The purpose of this paper is to describe the development and validation of a multi-dimensional instrument to measure servant leadership.
Design/Methodology/Approach
Based on an extensive literature review and expert judgment, 99 items were formulated. In three steps, using eight samples totaling 1571 persons from The Netherlands and the UK with a diverse occupational background, a combined exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis approach was used. This was followed by an analysis of the criterion-related validity.
Findings:
The final result is an eight-dimensional measure of 30 items: the eight dimensions being: standing back, forgiveness, courage, empowerment, accountability, authenticity, humility, and stewardship. The internal consistency of the subscales is good. The results show that the Servant Leadership Survey (SLS) has convergent validity with other leadership measures, and also adds unique elements to the leadership field. Evidence for criterion-related validity came from studies relating the eight dimensions to well-being and performance.
Implications:
With this survey, a valid and reliable instrument to measure the essential elements of servant leadership has been introduced.
Originality/Value
The SLS is the first measure where the underlying factor structure was developed and confirmed across several field studies in two countries. It can be used in future studies to test the underlying premises of servant leadership theory. The SLS provides a clear picture of the key servant leadership qualities and shows where improvements can be made on the individual and organizational level; as such, it may also offer a valuable starting point for training and leadership development
Pergumulan as the starter and sustainer of Servant Leadership A case of academic leadership in a private University in Indonesia
In the disruptive era, every organization is expected to cope with change. This includes the ones in the sector of higher education. Servant leadership is considered as the leadership approach that enables Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) to deal with the inevitable changes. This research explores an academic leadership in a private university in Indonesia, which endorses servant leadership as its leadership approach. The case study involves the interview of twenty-six academic leaders who have asked to answer two fundamental questions: 1) How do they perceive the invitation to lead as an academic leader and 2) What did they do as they consider whether to take the offer to lead as an academic leader? The gathered data was processed using the Qualitative Data Analysis consisting data condensation, data display and drawing and verifying conclusion. Twenty-five academic leaders said no when they first offer and this initial refusal drives the researcher to find a term called �pergumulan� as the common theme across the interviewees. �Pergumulan� or a spiritual struggle happened during the pre-leadership journey and during the leadership journey of these academic leaders. The former suggests that �pergumulan� is spiritual, intrapersonal and interpersonal. The latter indicates that pergumulan happens when the servant leaders search their motivation and figure out the way to improve themselves while serving their followers. Lastly, during their leadership, the servant leaders are also having the �pergumulan� as they have to confront or rebuke their followers
How can the skills of Early Years leaders support other leaders in a primary school setting?
This study investigated the leadership skills Early Years leaders demonstrated through their daily practice of teaching, assessing and teamwork within their setting. It explored how revealing the potential of Early Years leaders could have a positive impact on the leadership practice of other leaders in the same setting to improve pupil outcomes. A qualitative approach using interviews with Early Years leaders in 20 primary settings from the East Midlands and Bedfordshire areas was undertaken by two academics from two different UK based universities. Ethical guidelines ensuring anonymity and trustworthiness were followed. Using verbatim comments, data were analysed in themes against contemporary Early Years literature. Findings showed the skills of Early Years leaders could support pedagogy and practice but some of these skills were not utilized beyond this age phase. Our conclusion suggested that Early Years leaders had a range of leadership skills which were deemed specialist as they were unique to the success of the age phase, but needed to be exposed beyond Early Years for wider success and impact
Multiattribute perceptual mapping with idiosyncratic brand and attribute sets
This article proposes an extremely flexible procedure for perceptual mapping based on multiattribute ratings, such that the respondent freely generates sets of both brands and attributes. Therefore, the brands and attributes are known and relevant to each participant. Collecting and analyzing such idiosyncratic datasets can be challenging. Therefore, this study proposes a modification of generalized canonical correlation analysis to support the analysis of the complex data structure. The model results in a common perceptual map with subject-specific and overall fit measures. An experimental study compares the proposed procedure with alternative approaches using predetermined sets of brands and/or attributes. In the proposed procedure, brands are better known, attributes appear more relevant, and the respondent's burden is lower. The positions of brands in the new perceptual map differ from those obtained when using fixed brand sets. Moreover, the new procedure typically yields positioning information on more brands. An empirical study on positioning of shoe stores illustrates our procedure and resulting insights. Finally, the authors discuss limitations, potential application areas, and directions for research
Dynamic Energy Landscapes of Riboswitches Help Interpret Conformational Rearrangements and Function
Riboswitches are RNAs that modulate gene expression by ligand-induced conformational changes. However, the way in which sequence dictates alternative folding pathways of gene regulation remains unclear. In this study, we compute energy landscapes, which describe the accessible secondary structures for a range of sequence lengths, to analyze the transcriptional process as a given sequence elongates to full length. In line with experimental evidence, we find that most riboswitch landscapes can be characterized by three broad classes as a function of sequence length in terms of the distribution and barrier type of the conformational clusters: low-barrier landscape with an ensemble of different conformations in equilibrium before encountering a substrate; barrier-free landscape in which a direct, dominant βdownhillβ pathway to the minimum free energy structure is apparent; and a barrier-dominated landscape with two isolated conformational states, each associated with a different biological function. Sharing concepts with the βnew viewβ of protein folding energy landscapes, we term the three sequence ranges above as the sensing, downhill folding, and functional windows, respectively. We find that these energy landscape patterns are conserved in various riboswitch classes, though the order of the windows may vary. In fact, the order of the three windows suggests either kinetic or thermodynamic control of ligand binding. These findings help understand riboswitch structure/function relationships and open new avenues to riboswitch design
