A census of Oph candidate members from Gaia DR2
The Ophiuchus cloud complex is one of the best laboratories to study the
earlier stages of the stellar and protoplanetary disc evolution. The wealth of
accurate astrometric measurements contained in the Gaia Data Release 2 can be
used to update the census of Ophiuchus member candidates. We seek to find
potential new members of Ophiuchus and identify those surrounded by a
circumstellar disc. We constructed a control sample composed of 188 bona fide
Ophiuchus members. Using this sample as a reference we applied three different
density-based machine learning clustering algorithms (DBSCAN, OPTICS, and
HDBSCAN) to a sample drawn from the Gaia catalogue centred on the Ophiuchus
cloud. The clustering analysis was applied in the five astrometric dimensions
defined by the three-dimensional Cartesian space and the proper motions in
right ascension and declination. The three clustering algorithms systematically
identify a similar set of candidate members in a main cluster with astrometric
properties consistent with those of the control sample. The increased
flexibility of the OPTICS and HDBSCAN algorithms enable these methods to
identify a secondary cluster. We constructed a common sample containing 391
member candidates including 166 new objects, which have not yet been discussed
in the literature. By combining the Gaia data with 2MASS and WISE photometry,
we built the spectral energy distributions from 0.5 to 22\microm for a subset
of 48 objects and found a total of 41 discs, including 11 Class II and 1 Class
III new discs. Density-based clustering algorithms are a promising tool to
identify candidate members of star forming regions in large astrometric
databases. If confirmed, the candidate members discussed in this work would
represent an increment of roughly 40% of the current census of Ophiuchus.Comment: A&A, Accepted. Abridged abstrac
Response of sea bream to handling
Understanding how gilthead sea bream, Sparus aurata L., an important Mediterranean Sea species for aquaculture, respond physiologically to stressors commonly encountered in intensive rearing is important for eiective production, as managing for stress is a major factor in maintaining healthy ¢sh stocks. Our objective was to determine whether holding juvenile gilthead sea bream at a high density (HD), as a chronic stressor, would aiect their physiological responses to a subsequent acute handling stressor. After acclimation at a low density (LD) of 6k g m 3 in 200-L circular tanks containing 33^ 36 g L 1 recirculating seawater at 191C under a normal photoperiod, juvenile 37-g gilthead sea bream were con¢ned for 14 days at a HD of 26 kg m 3 an
The Best Brown Dwarf Yet?: A Companion to the Hyades Eclipsing Binary V471 Tau
We have carried out an analysis of about 160 eclipse timings spanning over 30
years of the Hyades eclipsing binary V471 Tauri that shows a long-term
quasi-sinusoidal modulation of its observed eclipse arrival times. The O-Cs
have been analyzed for the ``light-time'' effect that arises from the
gravitational influence of a tertiary companion. The presence of a third body
causes the relative distance of the eclipsing pair to the Earth to change as it
orbits the barycenter of the triple system. The result of the analysis of the
eclipse times yields a light-time semi-amplitude of 137.2+/-12.0 s, an orbital
period of P_3 = 30.5+/-1.6 yr and an eccentricity of e_3 = 0.31+/-0.04. The
mass of the tertiary component is M_3 sin i_3 = 0.0393+/-0.0038 Mo when a total
mass of 1.61+/-0.06 Mo for V471 Tau is adopted. For orbital inclinations i_3 >
35 deg, the mass of the third body would be below the stable hydrogen burning
limit of M = 0.07 Mo and it thus would be a brown dwarf. In the next several
years (near maximum elongation), it should be feasible to obtain IR images and
spectra of V471 Tau C that, when combined with the known mass, age, distance,
and [Fe/H], will serve as a benchmark for understanding the physical properties
and evolution of brown dwarfs.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letter
Overview of methods used to evaluate the adequacy of nutrient intakes for individuals and populations
The objective of the present paper is to review the methods of measuring micronutrient intake adequacy for individuals and for populations in order to ascertain best practice. A systematic review was conducted to locate studies on the methodological aspects of measuring nutrient adequacy. The results showed that for individuals, qualitative methods (to find probability of adequacy) and quantitative methods (to find confidence of adequacy) have been proposed for micronutrients where there is enough data to set an average nutrient requirement (ANR). If micronutrients do not have ANR, an adequate intake (AI) is often defined and can be used to assess adequacy, provided the distribution of daily intake over a number of days is known. The probability of an individual's intake being excessive can also be compared with the upper level of safe intake and the confidence of this estimate determined in a similar way. At the population level, adequacy can be judged from the ANR using the probability approach or its short cut – the estimated average requirement cut-point method. If the micronutrient does not have an ANR, adequacy cannot be determined from the average intake and must be expressed differently. The upper level of safe intake can be used for populations in a similar way to that of individuals. All of the methodological studies reviewed were from the American continent and all used the methodology described in the Institute of Medicine publications. The present methodology should now be adapted for use in Europe
The Distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud from the Eclipsing Binary HV2274
The distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is crucial for the
calibration of the Cosmic Distance Scale. We derive a distance to the LMC based
on an analysis of ground-based photometry and HST-based spectroscopy and
spectrophotometry of the LMC eclipsing binary system HV2274. Analysis of the
optical light curve and HST/GHRS radial velocity curve provides the masses and
radii of the binary components. Analysis of the HST/FOS UV/optical
spectrophotometry provides the temperatures of the component stars and the
interstellar extinction of the system. When combined, these data yield a
distance to the binary system. After correcting for the location of HV2274 with
respect to the center of the LMC, we find d(LMC) = 45.7 +/- 1.6 kpc or DM(LMC)
= 18.30 +/- 0.07 mag. This result, which is immune to the metallicity-induced
zero point uncertainties that have plagued other techniques, lends strong
support to the ``short'' LMC distance scale as derived from a number of
independent methods.Comment: 6 pages, including 2 pages of figures. Newly available optical (B and
V) photometry has revealed -- and allowed the elimination of -- a systematic
error in the previously reported determination of E(B-V) for HV2274. The new
result is E(B-V) = 0.12 mag (as compared to the value of 0.083 reported in
the original submission) and produces a DECREASE in the distance modulus of
HV2274 by 0.12 mag. ApJ Letters, in pres
Progressive loss functions for speech enhancement with deep neural networks
The progressive paradigm is a promising strategy to optimize network performance for speech enhancement purposes. Recent works have shown different strategies to improve the accuracy of speech enhancement solutions based on this mechanism. This paper studies the progressive speech enhancement using convolutional and residual neural network architectures and explores two criteria for loss function optimization: weighted and uniform progressive. This work carries out the evaluation on simulated and real speech samples with reverberation and added noise using REVERB and VoiceHome datasets. Experimental results show a variety of achievements among the loss function optimization criteria and the network architectures. Results show that the progressive design strengthens the model and increases the robustness to distortions due to reverberation and noise
First detection of thermal radio jets in a sample of proto-brown dwarf candidates
We observed with the JVLA at 3.6 and 1.3 cm a sample of 11 proto-brown dwarf
candidates in Taurus in a search for thermal radio jets driven by the most
embedded brown dwarfs. We detected for the first time four thermal radio jets
in proto-brown dwarf candidates. We compiled data from UKIDSS, 2MASS, Spitzer,
WISE and Herschel to build the Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) of the
objects in our sample, which are similar to typical Class~I SEDs of Young
Stellar Objects (YSOs). The four proto-brown dwarf candidates driving thermal
radio jets also roughly follow the well-known trend of centimeter luminosity
against bolometric luminosity determined for YSOs, assuming they belong to
Taurus, although they present some excess of radio emission compared to the
known relation for YSOs. Nonetheless, we are able to reproduce the flux
densities of the radio jets modeling the centimeter emission of the thermal
radio jets using the same type of models applied to YSOs, but with
corresponding smaller stellar wind velocities and mass-loss rates, and
exploring different possible geometries of the wind or outflow from the star.
Moreover, we also find that the modeled mass outflow rates for the bolometric
luminosities of our objects agree reasonably well with the trends found between
the mass outflow rates and bolometric luminosities of YSOs, which indicates
that, despite the "excess" centimeter emission, the intrinsic properties of
proto-brown dwarfs are consistent with a continuation of those of very low mass
stars to a lower mass range. Overall, our study favors the formation of brown
dwarfs as a scaled-down version of low-mass stars.Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, 14 tables, accepted by the Astrophysical Journa
