Ambivalent rhetorics: resentment and negotiation in youth sociability contexts in Cape Town (South Africa)

O objetivo deste artigo é refletir sobre um conjunto de questões relativas ao racismo, à sexualidade e ao contato intercultural na África do Sul, mais especificamente em Cape Town. Esta cidade, que já foi reconhecida como democrática, com expressiva população coloured e gay friendly se apresenta atualmente como uma das mais desiguais da África do Sul pós- apartheid. Percorremos trajetórias de homens e mulheres homo e heterossexuais, de diferentes raças e regiões, no sentido de abrir a escuta para suas experiências, dar inteligibilidade a seus campos de negociação e qualificar formas ressemantizadas de exclusão. Objetiva-se analisar uma nova e relativamente recente sensibilidade social advinda com a "rainbow"nation" - a experiência de mistura em sua articulação com marcadores sociais da diferença.The goal of this article is to reflect upon a series of questions concerning racism, sexuality and intercultural contact in South Africa and, specifically, Cape Town. The city, once acclaimed as democratic, with an expressive colored and gay-friendly population, has recently been (re)presented as one of the most unequal cities of post-apartheid South Africa. Here, we follow the life trajectories of some men and women, both homo- and heterosexual, of different races and regions, listening to their experiences in order to reveal their fields of negotiation and to thus qualify some re-signified forms of exclusion. Specifically, our objective is to analyze a new and relatively recent social sensibility arising within the "rainbow nation" (the experience of admixture in intersectionality with distinct social difference markers) that does not necessarily imply sexual-affective inter-racial dating

Repensando os letramentos pela perspectiva pós-humanista

O pós-humanismo não apenas convida a repensar a unidade básica de referência para o ser humano e as ciências humanas, como expande o conceito de (prática) social para abranger os seres humanos e os agentes não-humanos interagindo socialmente de forma mais horizontal e simétrica. A pesquisa sobre letramentos, diante dessa nova forma de olhar para o mundo, exige uma nova proposta teórica que supere binarismos usuais nesse campo de estudo tais como digital/analógico e múltiplos/único, entre outros. Portanto, este trabalho objetiva propor uma reflexão sobre o conceito de letramentos como práticas sociais sob uma perspectiva pós-humanista, considerando novas ideias vigentes na literatura sobre pós-humanismo, agência, cognição e subjetividade. Utiliza-se como método a pesquisa bibliográfica, tendo como principais referenciais os trabalhos da filósofa Rosi Braidotti sobre o pós-humanismo crítico, da crítica literária Nancy Hayles sobre a condição pós-humana, da física e teórica feminista Karen Barad acerca do realismo agencial e do linguista aplicado Alastair Pennycook acerca especificamente de sua proposta de uma linguística aplicada pós-humanista. O resultado dessa reflexão teórica indica que uma concepção pós-humanista de letramentos demanda que essas práticas sejam entendidas como práticas materiais-discursivas, isto é, práticas em que matéria e discurso emergem conjuntamente por intra-ação, o que implica um outro olhar para o que seriam os contextos, os sujeitos e os objetos dos letramentos. Por consequência, é também necessário considerar que os significados constitutivos dos letramentos não são isolados em unidades como palavras ou ideias de significantes, mas sim na rede material-discursiva construída por intra-ação

Species-specific calcite production reveals Coccolithus pelagicus as the key calcifier in the Arctic Ocean

Through the production and export of their calcite coccoliths, coccolithophores form a key component of the global carbon cycle. Despite this key role, very little is known about the biogeochemical role of different coccolithophore species in terms of calcite production, and how these species will respond to future climate change and ocean acidification. Here, we present the first study to estimate species-specific calcite production, from samples collected in the Arctic Ocean and subarctic Iceland Basin in June 2012. We show that although the coccolithophorid Coccolithus pelagicus comprised only a small fraction of the total community in terms of abundance (2%), our estimates indicate that it was the major calcite producer in the Arctic Ocean and Iceland Basin (57% of total calcite production). In contrast, Emiliania huxleyi formed 27% of the total abundance and was responsible for only 20% of the calcite production. That C. pelagicus was able to dominate calcite production was due to its relatively high cellular calcite content compared with the other species present. Our results demonstrate, for the first time, the importance of investigating the complete coccolithophore community when considering pelagic calcite production, as relatively rare but heavily calcified species such as C. pelagicus can be the key calcite producers in mixed communities. Therefore, the response of C. pelagicus to ocean acidification and climate change has the potential to have a major impact on carbon cycling within the North Atlantic and Arctic Ocean

Recent Progress in the RAUVI Project: A Reconfigurable Autonomous Underwater Vehicle for Intervention

Starting in January 2009, the RAUVI project is a three years coordinated research action funded by the Spanish Ministry of Research and Innovation. This paper shows the research evolution during the first half of RAUVI’s live, bearing in mind that the long term objective is to design and develop an underwater autonomous robot able to perceive the environment and, by means of a specific hand-arm system, perform autonomously simple intervention tasks in shallow waters.This research was partly supported by the European Commission’s Seventh Framework Programme FP7/2007- 2013 under grant agreement 248497 (TRIDENT Project), by Spanish Ministry of Research and Innovation DPI2008-06548- C03 (RAUVI Project), and by Fundació Caixa Castelló- Bancaixa P1-1B2009-50

A partir deste estudo foi possível observar que a educação muitas vezes é utilizada como instrumento de dominação e controle entre os países, de forma que reproduz práticas neocoloniais entre os países
