On the Politics of Folk Song Theory in Edwardian England
This article explores how and why a particular vision of folksong became widely popular during the early twentieth century. Focusing on Cecil J. Sharp, I show that despite severe criticism from contemporaries his beliefs won out as the dominant paradigm for the understanding of folk music. Interrogating the politics of his theorizing, moreover, I draw out the hitherto neglected imbrications between folk revivalism and fascist ideology. Seen as dialectical tools capable of reforming citizens through the expressive contours of their racial birthright, I argue, collected songs and dances were repurposed in the service of forging a national socialist consciousness

Notes on troubling ‘the popular’
This article throws new light on the troublesome question ‘what is popular music?’ by pursuing a genealogy of discourse in Britain during a crucial period from 1860 to 1920 in which modernity is increasingly characterised by an antagonistic relationship between intellectual elites and consumer entertainment. Focusing on London music halls, social reformism and ragtime, I argue that the term fell into two broad categories of use: first, to identify and/or denigrate mass culture; and second, to establish a pathway for edification and to champion ideals of respectability. Although implicated in the construction of binary oppositions and frequently associated with impropriety, the popular was not always associated with lowness. The idea, however, was shot through with contradictions deriving from a view of ‘the people’ as being simultaneously docile and seditious. Ultimately, I demonstrate that the popular is a floating signifier with the potential to reference mutually opposing ideas
The Evolutionary Status of Clusters of Galaxies at z ~ 1
Combined HST, X-ray, and ground-based optical studies show that clusters of
galaxies are largely "in place" by , an epoch when the Universe was
less than half its present age. High resolution images show that elliptical,
S0, and spiral galaxies are present in clusters at redshifts up to . Analysis of the CMDs suggest that the cluster ellipticals formed their
stars several Gyr earlier, near redshift 3. The morphology--density relation is
well established at , with star-forming spirals and irregulars residing
mostly in the outer parts of the clusters and E/S0s concentrated in dense
clumps. The intracluster medium has already reached the metallicity of
present-day clusters. The distributions of the hot gas and early-type galaxies
are similar in clusters, indicating both have largely virialized in
the deepest potentials wells. In spite of the many similarities between
and present-day clusters, there are significant differences. The
morphologies revealed by the hot gas, and particularly the early-type galaxies,
are elongated rather than spherical. We appear to be observing the clusters at
an epoch when the sub-clusters and groups are still assembling into a single
regular cluster. Support for this picture comes from CL0152 where the gas
appears to be lagging behind the luminous and dark mass in two merging
sub-components. Moreover, the luminosity difference between the first and
second brightest cluster galaxies at is smaller than in 93% of
present-day Abell clusters, which suggests that considerable luminosity
evolution through merging has occurred since that epoch. Evolution is also seen

Gestational age at delivery and special educational need: retrospective cohort study of 407,503 schoolchildren
<STRONG>Background</STRONG> Previous studies have demonstrated an association between preterm delivery and increased risk of special educational need (SEN). The aim of our study was to examine the risk of SEN across the full range of gestation. <STRONG>Methods and Findings</STRONG>
We conducted a population-based, retrospective study by linking school census data on the 407,503 eligible school-aged children resident in 19 Scottish Local Authority areas (total population 3.8 million) to their routine birth data. SEN was recorded in 17,784 (4.9%) children; 1,565 (8.4%) of those born preterm and 16,219 (4.7%) of those born at term. The risk of SEN increased across the whole range of gestation from 40 to 24 wk: 37–39 wk adjusted odds ratio (OR) 1.16, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.12–1.20; 33–36 wk adjusted OR 1.53, 95% CI 1.43–1.63; 28–32 wk adjusted OR 2.66, 95% CI 2.38–2.97; 24–27 wk adjusted OR 6.92, 95% CI 5.58–8.58. There was no interaction between elective versus spontaneous delivery. Overall, gestation at delivery accounted for 10% of the adjusted population attributable fraction of SEN. Because of their high frequency, early term deliveries (37–39 wk) accounted for 5.5% of cases of SEN compared with preterm deliveries (<37 wk), which accounted for only 3.6% of cases. <STRONG>Conclusions</STRONG> Gestation at delivery had a strong, dose-dependent relationship with SEN that was apparent across the whole range of gestation. Because early term delivery is more common than preterm delivery, the former accounts for a higher percentage of SEN cases. Our findings have important implications for clinical practice in relation to the timing of elective delivery
Perturbative Linearization of Reaction-Diffusion Equations
We develop perturbative expansions to obtain solutions for the initial-value
problems of two important reaction-diffusion systems, viz., the Fisher equation
and the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau (TDGL) equation. The starting point of
our expansion is the corresponding singular-perturbation solution. This
approach transforms the solution of nonlinear reaction-diffusion equations into
the solution of a hierarchy of linear equations. Our numerical results
demonstrate that this hierarchy rapidly converges to the exact solution.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, latex2
Fundamental Strings, Holography, and Nonlinear Superconformal Algebras
We discuss aspects of holography in the AdS_3 \times S^p near string geometry
of a collection of straight fundamental heterotic strings. We use anomalies and
symmetries to determine general features of the dual CFT. The symmetries
suggest the appearance of nonlinear superconformal algebras, and we show how
these arise in the framework of holographic renormalization methods. The
nonlinear algebras imply intricate formulas for the central charge, and we show
that in the bulk these correspond to an infinite series of quantum gravity
corrections. We also makes some comments on the worldsheet sigma-model for
strings on AdS_3\times S^2, which is the holographic dual geometry of parallel
heterotic strings in five dimensions.Comment: 25 page
Distances and ages of globular clusters using Hipparcos parallaxes of local subdwarfs
We discuss the impact of Population II and Globular Cluster (GCs) stars on
the derivation of the age of the Universe, and on the study of the formation
and early evolution of galaxies, our own in particular. The long-standing
problem of the actual distance scale to Population II stars and GCs is
addressed, and a variety of different methods commonly used to derive distances
to Population II stars are briefly reviewed. Emphasis is given to the
discussion of distances and ages for GCs derived using Hipparcos parallaxes of
local subdwarfs. Results obtained by different authors are slightly different,
depending on different assumptions about metallicity scale, reddenings, and
corrections for undetected binaries. These and other uncertainties present in
the method are discussed. Finally, we outline progress expected in the near
