On separability of quantum states and the violation of Bell-type inequalities
In contrast to the wide-spread opinion that any separable quantum state
satisfies every classical probabilistic constraint, we present a simple example
where a separable quantum state does not satisfy the original Bell inequality
although the latter inequality, in its perfect correlation form, is valid for
all joint classical measurements. In a very general setting, we discuss
inequalities for joint experiments upon a bipartite quantum system in a
separable state. We derive quantum analogues of the original Bell inequality
and specify the conditions sufficient for a separable state to satisfy the
original Bell inequality. We introduce the extended CHSH inequality and prove
that, for any separable quantum state, this inequality holds for a variety of
linear combinations.Comment: 13 pages, extended versio
Multiparticle Schrodinger operators with point interactions in the plane
We study a system of N bosons in the plane interacting with delta function
potentials. After a coupling constant renormalization we show that the
Hamiltonian defines a self-adjoint operator and obtain a lower bound for the
energy. The same results hold if one includes a regular inter-particle
potential.Comment: 17 pages, Late
Long-Time Dynamics of Variable Coefficient mKdV Solitary Waves
We study the Korteweg-de Vries-type equation dt u=-dx(dx^2 u+f(u)-B(t,x)u),
where B is a small and bounded, slowly varying function and f is a
nonlinearity. Many variable coefficient KdV-type equations can be rescaled into
this equation. We study the long time behaviour of solutions with initial
conditions close to a stable, B=0 solitary wave. We prove that for long time
intervals, such solutions have the form of the solitary wave, whose centre and
scale evolve according to a certain dynamical law involving the function
B(t,x), plus an H^1-small fluctuation.Comment: 19 page
High-resolution 3D weld toe stress analysis and ACPD method for weld toe fatigue crack initiation
Weld toe fatigue crack initiation is highly dependent on the local weld toe stress-concentrating geometry including any inherent flaws. These flaws are responsible for premature fatigue crack initiation (FCI) and must be minimised to maximise the fatigue life of a welded joint. In this work, a data-rich methodology has been developed to capture the true weld toe geometry and resulting local weld toe stress-field and relate this to the FCI life of a steel arc-welded joint. To obtain FCI lives, interrupted fatigue test was performed on the welded joint monitored by a novel multi-probe array of alternating current potential drop (ACPD) probes across the weld toe. This setup enabled the FCI sites to be located and the FCI life to be determined and gave an indication of early fatigue crack propagation rates. To understand fully the local weld toe stress-field, high-resolution (5 mu m) 3D linear-elastic finite element (FE) models were generated from X-ray micro-computed tomography (mu-CT) of each weld toe after fatigue testing. From these models, approximately 202 stress concentration factors (SCFs) were computed for every 1 mm of weld toe. These two novel methodologies successfully link to provide an assessment of the weld quality and this is correlated with the fatigue performance
The VLSI design of a single chip Reed-Solomon encoder
A design for a single chip implementation of a Reed-Solomon encoder is presented. The architecture that leads to this single VLSI chip design makes use of a bit serial finite field multiplication algorithm
On the VLSI design of a pipeline Reed-Solomon decoder using systolic arrays
A new very large scale integration (VLSI) design of a pipeline Reed-Solomon decoder is presented. The transform decoding technique used in a previous article is replaced by a time domain algorithm through a detailed comparison of their VLSI implementations. A new architecture that implements the time domain algorithm permits efficient pipeline processing with reduced circuitry. Erasure correction capability is also incorporated with little additional complexity. By using a multiplexing technique, a new implementation of Euclid's algorithm maintains the throughput rate with less circuitry. Such improvements result in both enhanced capability and significant reduction in silicon area
Menâs and womenâs migration in coastal Ghana
This article uses life history calendar (LHC) data from coastal Ghana and event history statistical methods to examine inter-regional migration for men and women, focusing on four specific migration types: rural-urban, rural-rural, urban-urban, and urban-rural. Our analysis is unique because it examines how key determinants of migrationĂąâŹâincluding education, employment, marital status, and childbearingĂąâŹâdiffer by sex for these four types of migration. We find that women are significantly less mobile than men overall, but that more educated women are more likely to move (particularly to urban areas) than their male counterparts. Moreover, employment in the prior year is less of a deterrent to migration among women. While childbearing has a negative effect on migration, this impact is surprisingly stronger for men than for women, perhaps because womenâs search for assistance in childcare promotes migration. Meanwhile, being married or in union appears to have little effect on migration probabilities for either men or women. These results demonstrate the benefits of a LHC approach and suggest that migration research should further examine menâs and womenâs mobility as it relates to both human capital and household and family dynamics, particularly in developing settings.event history analysis, Ghana, life history, migration, Sub-Saharan Africa, urbanization
Propagators weakly associated to a family of Hamiltonians and the adiabatic theorem for the Landau Hamiltonian with a time-dependent Aharonov-Bohm flux
We study the dynamics of a quantum particle moving in a plane under the
influence of a constant magnetic field and driven by a slowly time-dependent
singular flux tube through a puncture. The known adiabatic results do not cover
these models as the Hamiltonian has time dependent domain. We give a meaning to
the propagator and prove an adiabatic theorem. To this end we introduce and
develop the new notion of a propagator weakly associated to a time-dependent
Hamiltonian.Comment: Title and Abstract changed, will appear in Journal of Mathematical

The invention relates to a concatenated Reed-Solomon/convolutional encoding system consisting of a Reed-Solomon outer code and a convolutional inner code for downlink telemetry in space missions, and more particularly to a Reed-Solomon encoder with programmable interleaving of the information symbols and code correction symbols to combat error bursts in the Viterbi decoder
