Specifying, Analyzing, Integrating Mobile Apps and Location Sensors as part of Cyber-Physical Systems in the Classroom Environment

Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) are characterized as complex systems usually networked, composed of several heterogeneous components that make the connection between events in the physical environment with computation. We can observe that this kind of systems is increasingly used in different areas such as automotive facilities, construction (civil engineering), health care and energy industry, providing a service or activity which depends on the interaction with users and the physical environment in which they are installed. Nowadays, in the educational context, the process of control and monitor of evaluation activities is conducted in a non-automated way by lecturers. This control is performed before, during and after the beginning of the evaluation activity, and include logistical processes such as classroom reservation, distribution of students per classroom, attendance record or fraud control. However, in an environment involving a large number of students, the execution of these tasks becomes difficult to perform efficiently and safely, requiring innovative techniques or assistance tools. In this work, the creation/design of a cyber-physical system through a modeling approach is proposed, aiming to help teachers to control and monitor evaluation activities. Based on a systematic literature study, we claim that there are no studies presenting the modeling of cyber-physical systems in an educational context, enhancing the interest of the proposed case study. In this document, we show how we used a framework named ModelicaML to model this system during the design phase. Also, this framework will offer a simulation component to simulate the behavior of the prescribed system. On the side of the hardware architecture, for the purpose of identifying the valid seats for the specific students inclass during the examination period, an indoor location system will be used, allowing to blueprint the physical layout of the room and globally manage the activity workflow. We finish this work by showing with empirical studies the gains of our solution when compared to the traditional method

A Framework for the Design and Implementation of Learning Objects: a Competence-based Approach

    Get PDF
This paper presents a framework for the design and implementation of learning objects using a competence-based approach. This framework is illustrated by the development of a standalone Windows application (Trilho GOA) whose primary purpose is to create standardized pedagogical contents trough the aggregation and standardization of instructional resources in several formats that can be used later on a Learning Management System (LMS) supporting SCORM 1.2. The paper contains a brief introduction to the developed software, its system architecture, main features and several pedagogical advantages for its users

Stories written in popular language, told by survivors of shipwrecks or attacks by English, French and Dutch corsairs, distributed in Lisbon in the form of pamphlets or leaflets of "cord" (linked by a rope to a cane), where the workshop specialized print of António Álvares, read and heard with strong theatrical meaning in public squares or the night meeting around a drunk, the two volumes of the "Tragic-Maritime History", summarized and published by Bernardo Gomes de Brito in 1735 and 1736 , are composed of innumerable misadventures occurred at sea, between the first half of the 16th century and the first half of the following century.

Statistical Multiplexing of H.264 video streams using Structural Similarity Information

In this paper, we propose a method to broadcast digital video programs in which the channel capacity is dynamically distributed among video programs according to each video program particular complexity. A bit rate control algorithm based on the Structural Similarity Index as the measure of video program complexity is examined. Initial results show that a uniform picture quality among video programs can be obtained

Bento, P., Neto, M., & Corte-Real, N. (2022). How data governance frameworks can leverage data-driven decision making: A sustainable approach for data governance in organizations. In A. Rocha, B. Bordel, F. G. Penalvo, & R. Goncalves (Eds.), 2022 17th Iberian Conference on Information Systems and Technologies (CISTI): Proceedings (pp. 1-5). (Iberian Conference on Information Systems and Technologies, CISTI). IEEE Computer Society. https://doi.org/10.23919/CISTI54924.2022.9866895With the technological advances, organizations have experienced an increasing volume and variety of data, as well as the need to explore it to stay competitive. Data governance (DG) importance emerges to support the data flow, to record and manage knowledge derived from data, as well as establishing roles, accountabilities, and strategies, which further results in better decision-making. Through the definition of strategies to manage data in a consistent manner, data governance establishes the path to an enterprise-wide standardization, providing unchallenging access, management, and analysis of data to derive useful insights. Research on data governance frameworks is limited and lacks a key perspective: how can firms ensure sustainability on their programs. Data governance programs can only be continuously valuable if supported by a holistic framework focused on sustainability. To understand this gap, five frameworks are presented, analyzed and evaluated according to an assessment matrix based on eleven critical success factors (CSF) for data governance. As a result of this study, where we offer a more comprehensive assessment tool, both researchers and practitioners can understand the maturity level of each CSF in the reviewed frameworks and identify which areas need further exploration and how to accomplish higher data governance maturity levels.authorsversionpublishe

    Get PDF

    Get PDF
Miranda Barbosa, inspired by the Aristotelian-Thomist philosophy, builds the edifice of a pure logic, a priori, with the contributions of mathematical logic. Miranda Barbosa refuses the new purposes of the existentialism and phenomenology. Therefore we designate him as the philosopher’s “last classic” in Portugal
