Dynamic capability through project portfolio management in service and manufacturing industries

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to summarise a recent doctoral thesis on the relationship between project portfolio management (PPM) and competitive advantage in service and manufacturing organisations. Design/methodology/approachThis two-phase mixed method study comprises a quantitative questionnaire-based survey and a qualitative multiple-case study to address the âwhatâ and the âhowâ of the research questions. FindingsThis paper adopts a âdynamic capabilitiesâ perspective, drawing on organisational learning theory to explain the path-dependent nature of PPM capability development and how PPM capabilities work with the resource base to enhance competitive advantage. Findings support prior PPM studies and suggest a positive relationship between structured PPM capabilities and improved outcomes. The research compares service and manufacturing environments; future challenges are likely to result from the increasing blurring of the boundaries between service and manufacturing industries. Practical implicationsThe research has four main practical outcomes: development of a model representing the overall PPM capability; a benchmark for and guidance on specific PPM processes and methods; guidance on the types of organisational learning investments that enhance the establishment and evolution of PPM capabilities; and the initial development of an outcomes and learning-based maturity model for PPM capabilities. Originality/valueThis paper produces the first benchmark of innovation PPM capabilities in Australia, and is the first to include service product-focused portfolios. It is the first study that identifies PPM capabilities as dynamic capability, allowing existing research to be viewed through the dynamic capability lens and, more importantly, providing a theoretical underpinning that may influence future research and practice

A decrease in the number of GABAergic somata is associated with the preferential loss of GABAergic terminals at epileptic foci.
Previous studies have indicated that a loss of GABAergic terminals occurs at epileptic foci. The present study was undertaken to investigate if this loss is associated with a loss of GABAergic neuronal somata. Seven juvenile monkeys (M. mulatta) received alumina gel injections to the pre-central gyrus of the left cerebral hemisphere to produce epileptic foci. Four of these monkeys were chosen for further quantitative study. One was sacrificed prior to seizure onset ('pre-seizure'), one had seizures for 3 days ('acute'), and two had a seizure record of one month ('chronic'). Sections of tissue from the epileptic cortex and from the contralateral, non-epileptic cortex were processed for glutamate decarboxylase (GAD) immunocytochemistry at the light microscopic level. Quantitative analysis revealed that a loss of GAD-positive neuronal somata ranging from 24 to 52% occurred at epileptic foci for all monkeys. This decrease was significant (P less than 0.01) for the two chronic monkeys. There was also a slight decrease in GAD-positive neurons 1 cm distal to the focus ('parafocus') in the chronic monkeys, but not in the acute or pre-seizure animals. In addition, small GAD-positive somata (50-150 micron2) were more severely decreased in number at epileptic foci than larger ones (200-250 micron2). As an experimental control, an additional monkey was given a surgical lesion in area 4 of one cerebral hemisphere. It did not display seizure activity prior to sacrifice and did not show a loss of GAD-positive neurons proximal to the control lesions. The results of this study indicate that a loss of GABAergic neuronal somata is associated with a loss of GABAergic terminals at epileptic foci, and that this loss may be more specific for the small GABAergic neurons
Dissolution dominating calcification process in polar pteropods close to the point of aragonite undersaturation
Thecosome pteropods are abundant upper-ocean zooplankton that build aragonite shells. Ocean acidification results in the lowering of aragonite saturation levels in the surface layers, and several incubation studies have shown that rates of calcification in these organisms decrease as a result. This study provides a weight-specific net calcification rate function for thecosome pteropods that includes both rates of dissolution and calcification over a range of plausible future aragonite saturation states (Omega_Ar). We measured gross dissolution in the pteropod Limacina helicina antarctica in the Scotia Sea (Southern Ocean) by incubating living specimens across a range of aragonite saturation states for a maximum of 14 days. Specimens started dissolving almost immediately upon exposure to undersaturated conditions (Omega_Ar,0.8), losing 1.4% of shell mass per day. The observed rate of gross dissolution was different from that predicted by rate law kinetics of aragonite dissolution, in being higher at Var levels slightly above 1 and lower at Omega_Ar levels of between 1 and 0.8. This indicates that shell mass is affected by even transitional levels of saturation, but there is, nevertheless, some partial means of protection for shells when in undersaturated conditions. A function for gross dissolution against Var derived from the present observations was compared to a function for gross calcification derived by a different study, and showed that dissolution became the dominating process even at Omega_Ar levels close to 1, with net shell growth ceasing at an Omega_Ar of 1.03. Gross dissolution increasingly dominated net change in shell mass as saturation levels decreased below 1. As well as influencing their viability, such dissolution of pteropod shells in the surface layers will result in slower sinking velocities and decreased carbon and carbonate fluxes to the deep ocean
Korn's second inequality and geometric rigidity with mixed growth conditions
Geometric rigidity states that a gradient field which is -close to the
set of proper rotations is necessarily -close to a fixed rotation, and is
one key estimate in nonlinear elasticity. In several applications, as for
example in the theory of plasticity, energy densities with mixed growth appear.
We show here that geometric rigidity holds also in and in
interpolation spaces. As a first step we prove the corresponding linear
inequality, which generalizes Korn's inequality to these spaces
Extensive dissolution of live pteropods in the Southern Ocean
The carbonate chemistry of the surface ocean is rapidly
changing with ocean acidification, a result of human activities. In the upper layers of the Southern Ocean, aragoniteâa metastable form of calcium carbonate with rapid dissolution kineticsâmay become undersaturated by 2050 (ref. 2). Aragonite undersaturation is likely to affect aragonite-shelled organisms, which can dominate surface water communities in polar regions. Here we present analyses of specimens of the pteropod Limacina helicina antarctica that were extracted live from the Southern Ocean early in 2008. We sampled from the top 200m of the water column, where aragonite saturation levels were around 1, as upwelled deep water is mixed with surface water containing anthropogenic CO2. Comparing the shell structure with samples from aragonite-supersaturated regions elsewhere under a scanning electron microscope, we found severe levels of shell dissolution in the undersaturated region alone. According to laboratory incubations of intact samples with a range of aragonite saturation levels, eight days of incubation in aragonite saturation levels of 0.94â
1.12 produces equivalent levels of dissolution. As deep-water upwelling and CO2 absorption by surface waters is likely to increase as a result of human activities2,4, we conclude that upper ocean regions where aragonite-shelled organisms are affected by dissolution are likely to expand
Sex differences in mathematics and reading achievement are inversely related: within- and across-nation assessment of 10 years of PISA data
We analyzed one decade of data collected by the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), including the mathematics and reading performance of nearly 1.5 million 15 year olds in 75 countries. Across nations, boys scored higher than girls in mathematics, but lower than girls in reading. The sex difference in reading was three times as large as in mathematics. There was considerable variation in the extent of the sex differences between nations. There are countries without a sex difference in mathematics performance, and in some countries girls scored higher than boys. Boys scored lower in reading in all nations in all four PISA assessments (2000, 2003, 2006, 2009). Contrary to several previous studies, we found no evidence that the sex differences were related to nationsâ gender equality indicators. Further, paradoxically, sex differences in mathematics were consistently and strongly inversely correlated with sex differences in reading: Countries with a smaller sex difference in mathematics had a larger sex difference in reading and vice versa. We demonstrate that this was not merely a between-nation, but also a within-nation effect. This effect is related to relative changes in these sex differences across the performance continuum: We did not find a sex difference in mathematics among the lowest performing students, but this is where the sex difference in reading was largest. In contrast, the sex difference in mathematics was largest among the higher performing students, and this is where the sex difference in reading was smallest. The implication is that if policy makers decide that changes in these sex differences are desired, different approaches will be needed to achieve this for reading and mathematics. Interventions that focus on high-achieving girls in mathematics and on low achieving boys in reading are likely to yield the strongest educational benefits
Mathematizing Darwin
Ernst Mayr called the first part of the evolutionary synthesis the âFisherian synthesisâ on account of the dominant role played by R.A. Fisher in forging a mathematical theory of natural selection together with J.B.S. Haldane and Sewall Wright in the decade 1922â1932. It is here argued that Fisherâs contribution relied on a close reading of Darwinâs work to a much greater extent than did the contributions of Haldane and Wright, that it was synthetic in contrast to their analytic approach and that it was greatly influenced by his friendship with the Darwin family, particularly with Charlesâs son Leonard
Magnetic resonance imaging sequence evaluation of an MR Linac system; early clinical experience.
Objectives:To systematically identify the preferred magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences following volunteer imaging on a 1.5 Tesla (T) MR-Linear Accelerator (MR Linac) for future protocol development. Methods:Non-patient volunteers were recruited to a Research and Ethics committee approved prospective MR-only imaging study on a 1.5T MR Linac system. Volunteers attended 1-3 imaging sessions that included a combination of mDixon, T1w, T2w sequences using 2-dimensional (2D) and 3-dimensional (3D) acquisitions. Each sequence was acquired over 2-7 minutes and reviewed by a panel of 3 observers to evaluate image quality using a visual grading analysis based on a 4-point Likert scale. Sequences were acquired and modified iteratively until deemed fit for purpose (online image matching or re-planning) and all observers agreed they were suitable in 3 volunteers. Results:26 volunteers underwent 31 imaging sessions of six general anatomical regions. Images were acquired in one or two of six general anatomical regions: male pelvis (nâŻ=âŻ9), female pelvis (nâŻ=âŻ4), chestwall/breast (nâŻ=âŻ5), lung/oesophagus (nâŻ=âŻ5), abdomen (nâŻ=âŻ3) and head and neck (nâŻ=âŻ5). Images were acquired using a pre-defined exam-card that on average, included six sequences (range 2-10), with a maximum scan time of approximately one hour. The majority of observers preferred T2-weighted sequences. The thorax teams were the only groups to prefer T1-weighted imaging. Conclusions:An iterative process identified sequence agreement in all anatomical regions. These sequences will now be evaluated in patient volunteers. Advances in knowledge:This manuscript is the first publication sharing the results of the first systematic selection of MRI sequences for use in on-board MRI-guided radiotherapy by end-users (therapeutic radiographers and clinical oncologists) in healthy volunteers
Annual and seasonal movements of migrating short-tailed shearwaters reflect environmental variation in sub-Arctic and Arctic waters
The marine ecosystems of the Bering Sea and adjacent southern Chukchi Sea are experiencing rapid changes due to recent reductions in sea ice. Short-tailed shearwaters Puffinus tenuirostris visit this region in huge numbers between the boreal summer and autumn during non-breeding season, and represent one of the dominant top predators. To understand the implications for this species of ongoing environmental change in the Pacific sub-Arctic and Arctic seas, we tracked the migratory movements of 19 and 24 birds in 2010 and 2011, respectively, using light-level geolocators. In both years, tracked birds occupied the western (Okhotsk Sea and Kuril Islands) and eastern (southeast Bering Sea) North Pacific from May to July. In AugustâSeptember of 2010, but not 2011, a substantial proportion (68 % of the tracked individuals in 2010 compared to 38 % in 2011) moved through the Bering Strait to feed in the Chukchi Sea. Based on the correlation with oceanographic variables, the probability of shearwater occurrence was highest in waters with sea surface temperatures (SSTs) of 8â10 °C over shallow depths. Furthermore, shearwaters spent more time flying when SST was warmer than 9 °C, suggesting increased search effort for prey. We hypothesized that the northward shift in the distribution of shearwaters may have been related to temperature-driven changes in the abundance of their dominant prey, krill (Euphausiacea), as the timing of krill spawning coincides with the seasonal increase in water temperature. Our results indicate a flexible response of foraging birds to ongoing changes in the sub-Arctic and Arctic ecosystems
