    Collineation group as a subgroup of the symmetric group

    Let Κ\Psi be the projectivization (i.e., the set of one-dimensional vector subspaces) of a vector space of dimension ≄3\ge 3 over a field. Let HH be a closed (in the pointwise convergence topology) subgroup of the permutation group SΚ\mathfrak{S}_{\Psi} of the set Κ\Psi. Suppose that HH contains the projective group and an arbitrary self-bijection of Κ\Psi transforming a triple of collinear points to a non-collinear triple. It is well-known from \cite{KantorMcDonough} that if Κ\Psi is finite then HH contains the alternating subgroup AΚ\mathfrak{A}_{\Psi} of SΚ\mathfrak{S}_{\Psi}. We show in Theorem \ref{density} below that H=SΚH=\mathfrak{S}_{\Psi}, if Κ\Psi is infinite.Comment: 9 page

    On The Low Frequency Quasi Periodic Oscillations of X-ray Sources

    Based on the interpretation of the twin kilohertz Quasi Periodic Oscillations (kHz QPOs) of X-ray spectra of Low Mass X-Ray Binaries (LMXBs) to the Keplerian and the periastron precession frequencies at the magnetosphere-disk of X-ray neutron star (NS) respectively, we ascribe the low frequency Quasi Periodic Oscillations (LFQPO) and HBO (15-60 Hz QPO for Z sources or Atoll sources) to the periastron precession at some outer disk radius. The obtained conclusions include: all QPO frequencies increase with increasing the accretion rate. The obtained theoretical relations between HBO (LFQPO) frequency and the kHz QPO frequency are similar to the measured empirical formula.     This article examines contextual and situational influences on the processural development of women\u27s violent conflicts. Through close analysis of 3 women\u27s accounts of their disputes and associated violent behaviours, we provide a rich description of how such events evolved over time and how the interviewees managed this process. Drawing upon both criminological and feminist theories, our analysis highlights existing gaps in the literature, providing an exploratory discussion of the interaction of gender with situational elements and the production of assaultive events

    Are the magnetic fields of millisecond pulsars ~ 10^8 G?

    It is generally assumed that the magnetic fields of millisecond pulsars (MSPs) are ∌108\sim 10^{8}G. We argue that this may not be true and the fields may be appreciably greater. We present six evidences for this: (1) The ∌108\sim 10^{8} G field estimate is based on magnetic dipole emission losses which is shown to be questionable; (2) The MSPs in low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) are claimed to have <1011< 10^{11} G on the basis of a Rayleygh-Taylor instability accretion argument. We show that the accretion argument is questionable and the upper limit 101110^{11} G may be much higher; (3) Low magnetic field neutron stars have difficulty being produced in LMXBs; (4) MSPs may still be accreting indicating a much higher magnetic field; (5) The data that predict ∌108\sim 10^{8} G for MSPs also predict ages on the order of, and greater than, ten billion years, which is much greater than normal pulsars. If the predicted ages are wrong, most likely the predicted ∌108\sim 10^{8} G fields of MSPs are wrong; (6) When magnetic fields are measured directly with cyclotron lines in X-ray binaries, fields ≫108\gg 10^{8} G are indicated. Other scenarios should be investigated. One such scenario is the following. Over 85% of MSPs are confirmed members of a binary. It is possible that all MSPs are in large separation binaries having magnetic fields >108> 10^{8} G with their magnetic dipole emission being balanced by low level accretion from their companions.Comment: 16 pages, accept for publication in Astrophysics and Space Scienc

    Simultaneous interval regression for K-nearest neighbor

    International audienceIn some regression problems, it may be more reasonable to predict intervals rather than precise values. We are interested in finding intervals which simultaneously for all input instances x ∈X contain a ÎČ proportion of the response values. We name this problem simultaneous interval regression. This is similar to simultaneous tolerance intervals for regression with a high confidence level γ ≈ 1 and several authors have already treated this problem for linear regression. Such intervals could be seen as a form of confidence envelop for the prediction variable given any value of predictor variables in their domain. Tolerance intervals and simultaneous tolerance intervals have not yet been treated for the K-nearest neighbor (KNN) regression method. The goal of this paper is to consider the simultaneous interval regression problem for KNN and this is done without the homoscedasticity assumption. In this scope, we propose a new interval regression method based on KNN which takes advantage of tolerance intervals in order to choose, for each instance, the value of the hyper-parameter K which will be a good trade-off between the precision and the uncertainty due to the limited sample size of the neighborhood around each instance. In the experiment part, our proposed interval construction method is compared with a more conventional interval approximation method on six benchmark regression data sets

    Sound production in bark and ambrosia beetles

Bark and ambrosia beetles and pinhole borers (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae and Platypodinae) are two subfamilies of weevils that use acoustic communication within plant tissue. These insects transmit and detect sound in a medium that is neither air nor water and they are among the smallest animals with sound-producing organs. Nevertheless, their sound production is sorely understudied, mostly due to the difficulties associated with acoustically monitoring individuals inside plants. We analysed the stridulatory sounds from 55 bark and ambrosia beetle species within 15 subtribes collected in four countries, making this the largest acoustic dataset of these taxa to date. We characterised and compared the amplitude and spectro-temporal parameters of the distress airborne signals produced by the beetles, in conjunction with phenology and life history data. Sound production was present in 33% of the collected species, of which 60% of these sounds had not been previously reported. Depending on species, either both sexes stridulated or only one. Some species had calls with different acoustic morphotypes (one, two, or three notes), and when both sexes stridulated, sounds generally differed. Our data suggest that type of mating system and size play an important role in determining the acoustic communicatory capacity of most species

    On the processing conditions and interfacial chemistry of composite PZT thick films on platinised silicon substrates

    Planar piezoelectric actuators have been fabricated in a range of complex geometries with PZT thick films on Platinised silicon. Spiral actuators have been fabricated where the spiral shape allows long beams to be contained compactly in order to aid deflection. The stabilisation of PZT thick films derived from composite slurries derived from powder sol dispersions has been achieved with a YSZ barrier layer. Interfacial formation of PtxPb intermetallic and PbSiO3 at the substrate electrode interface occurs at low and high oxygen partial pressures respectively. Densification of the thick film material, assisted by infiltration of sol, lowers interfacial po2 through inhibiting oxygen diffusion. Under extreme circumstances, re-oxidation of the intermetallic is not possible and it remains even after sintering. Densification of thick film materials proceeds more readily under an atmosphere of high oxygen partial pressure although in the absence of a suitable barrier layer, film delamination is promoted. Delamination was found to occur at the interface between electrode and substrate and not between film and electrode

    A weakly stable algorithm for general Toeplitz systems

    We show that a fast algorithm for the QR factorization of a Toeplitz or Hankel matrix A is weakly stable in the sense that R^T.R is close to A^T.A. Thus, when the algorithm is used to solve the semi-normal equations R^T.Rx = A^Tb, we obtain a weakly stable method for the solution of a nonsingular Toeplitz or Hankel linear system Ax = b. The algorithm also applies to the solution of the full-rank Toeplitz or Hankel least squares problem.Comment: 17 pages. An old Technical Report with postscript added.
