    Reconstruction of Black Hole Metric Perturbations from Weyl Curvature

    Perturbation theory of rotating black holes is usually described in terms of Weyl scalars ψ4\psi_4 and ψ0\psi_0, which each satisfy Teukolsky's complex master wave equation and respectively represent outgoing and ingoing radiation. On the other hand metric perturbations of a Kerr hole can be described in terms of (Hertz-like) potentials Ψ\Psi in outgoing or ingoing {\it radiation gauges}. In this paper we relate these potentials to what one actually computes in perturbation theory, i.e ψ4\psi_4 and ψ0\psi_0. We explicitly construct these relations in the nonrotating limit, preparatory to devising a corresponding approach for building up the perturbed spacetime of a rotating black hole. We discuss the application of our procedure to second order perturbation theory and to the study of radiation reaction effects for a particle orbiting a massive black hole.Comment: 6 Pages, Revtex

    An Investigation of a Mixer-Ejector Nozzle for Jet Noise Reduction

    An experimental study is conducted assessing the performance of an ejector together with an 8:1 aspect ratio rectangular nozzle with the eventual goal of noise reduction for jet engines. Wall static pressure and Pitot probe surveys are conducted to evaluate the performance of the ejector, and sound pressure level measurements are made to assess the impact on noise radiation. It is found that addition of vortex generating tabs at the lip of the nozzle causes large increases in secondary flow entrainment. The baseline ejector (without tabs) often encounters flow resonance with accompanying tones. The tabs have the additional benefit of eliminating those tones. In most cases tried so far, pockets of high-speed fluid remain unmixed. Since jet noise scales as velocity to the eighth power, such hot spots defeat the noise reduction goal. In some cases, there is a reduction in noise amplitudes in the mid-frequency range (5-30 kHz), however, an increase occurs on the low frequency end apparently due to flow unsteadiness. This together with a high frequency noise increase caused by the tabs results in minimal reductions in the overall sound pressure level. The focus of ongoing and future efforts is to achieve sufficient mixing and desirable noise reduction while keeping the hard-ware short and lightweight

    Continental-scale variation in otolith geochemistry of juvenile American shad (Alosa sapidissima)

The definitive version was published in Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences 65 (2008): 2623-2635, doi:10.1139/F08-164.We assembled a comprehensive atlas of geochemical signatures in juvenile American shad (Alosa sapidissima) to discriminate natal river origins on a large spatial scale and at a high spatial resolution. Otoliths and (or) water samples were collected from 20 major spawning rivers from Florida to Quebec and were analyzed for elemental (Mg:Ca, Mn:Ca, Sr:Ca, and Ba:Ca) and isotope (87Sr:86Sr and δ18O) ratios. We examined correlations between water chemistry and otolith composition for five rivers where both were sampled. While Sr:Ca, Ba:Ca, 87Sr:86Sr, and δ18O values in otoliths reflected those ratios in ambient waters, Mg:Ca and Mn:Ca ratios in otoliths varied independently of water chemistry. Geochemical signatures were highly distinct among rivers, with an average classification accuracy of 93% using only those variables where otolith values were accurately predicted from water chemistry data. The study represents the largest assembled database of otolith signatures from the entire native range of a species, encompassing approximately 2700 km of coastline and 19 degrees of latitude and including all major extant spawning populations.     Transcriptomics and proteomics reveal a cooperation between interferon and T-helper 17 cells in neuromyelitis optica

    Type I interferon (IFN-I) and T helper 17 (TH17) drive pathology in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) and in TH17-induced experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (TH17-EAE). This is paradoxical because the prevalent theory is that IFN-I inhibits TH17 function. Here we report that a cascade involving IFN-I, IL-6 and B cells promotes TH17-mediated neuro-autoimmunity. In NMOSD, elevated IFN-I signatures, IL-6 and IL-17 are associated with severe disability. Furthermore, IL-6 and IL-17 levels are lower in patients on anti-CD20 therapy. In mice, IFN-I elevates IL-6 and exacerbates TH17-EAE. Strikingly, IL-6 blockade attenuates disease only in mice treated with IFN-I. By contrast, B-cell-deficiency attenuates TH17-EAE in the presence or absence of IFN-I treatment. Finally, IFN-I stimulates B cells to produce IL-6 to drive pathogenic TH17 differentiation in vitro. Our data thus provide an explanation for the paradox surrounding IFN-I and TH17 in neuro-autoimmunity, and may have utility in predicting therapeutic response in NMOSD

    Defining phenotype, tropism, and retinal gene therapy using adeno-associated viral vectors (AAVs) in new-born Brown Norway rats with a spontaneous mutation in Crb1

    Mutations in the Crumbs homologue 1 (CRB1) gene cause inherited retinal dystrophies, such as early-onset retinitis pigmentosa and Leber congenital amaurosis. A Brown Norway rat strain was reported with a spontaneous insertion-deletion (indel) mutation in exon 6 of Crb1. It has been reported that these Crb1 mutant rats show vascular abnormalities associated with retinal telangiectasia and possess an early-onset retinal degenerative phenotype with outer limiting membrane breaks and focal loss of retinal lamination at 2 months of age. Here, we further characterized the morphological phenotype of new-born and adult Crb1 mutant rats in comparison with age-matched Brown Norway rats without a mutation in Crb1. A significantly decreased retinal function and visual acuity was observed in Crb1 mutant rats at 1 and 3 months of age, respectively. Moreover, in control rats, the subcellular localization of canonical CRB1 was observed at the subapical region in Muller glial cells while CRB2 was observed at the subapical region in both photoreceptors and Muller glial cells by immuno-electron microscopy. CRB1 localization was lost in the Crb1 mutant rats, whereas CRB2 was still observed. In addition, we determined the tropism of subretinal or intravitreally administered AAV5-, AAV9- or AAV6-variant ShH10(Y445F) vectors in new-born control and Crb1 mutant rat retinas. We showed that subretinal injection of AAV5 and AAV9 at postnatal days 5 (P5) or 8 (P8) predominantly infected the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and photoreceptor cells; while intravitreal injection of ShH10(Y445F) at P5 or P8 resulted in efficient infection of mainly Muller glial cells. Using knowledge of the subcellular localization of CRB1 and the ability of ShH10(Y445F) to infect Muller glial cells, canonical hCRB1 and hCRB2 AAV-mediated gene therapy were explored in new-born Crb1 mutant rats. Enhanced retinal function after gene therapy delivery in the Crb1 rat was not observed. No timely rescue of the retinal phenotype was observed using retinal function and visual acuity, suggesting the need for earlier onset of expression of recombinant hCRB proteins in Muller glial cells to rescue the severe retinal phenotype in Crb1 mutant rats.Ophthalmic researc

    The Theory/Applications Balance in Management Pedagogy: Where Do We Stand?

    Business schools are expected to be "professional" in the sense that their mission is primarily to prepare people to practice their skills in the business world. Various critics, however, claim that management professors overemphasize theory and research and neglect the practice and applications students need to transfer classroom theory to the world of practice. This study compared an earlier sample with a more recent sample of Academy of Management members concerning the relative emphasis they believed should be placed on theory and applications in management pedagogy and the techniques they used to bring applications into the classroom. Current respondents believed that more emphasis should be placed on applications than the earlier respondents. An unexpected finding, however, was that the more recent respondents reported a lower mean usage of pedagogical techniques that are appropriate for developing students' ability to apply course concepts than the previous group.     CPT, T, and Lorentz Violation in Neutral-Meson Oscillations

    Tests of CPT and Lorentz symmetry using neutral-meson oscillations are studied within a formalism that allows for indirect CPT and T violation of arbitrary size and is independent of phase conventions. The analysis is particularly appropriate for studies of CPT and T violation in oscillations of the heavy neutral mesons D, B_d, and B_s. The general Lorentz- and CPT-breaking standard-model extension is used to derive an expression for the parameter for CPT violation. It varies in a prescribed way with the magnitude and orientation of the meson momentum and consequently also with sidereal time. Decay probabilities are presented for both uncorrelated and correlated mesons, and some implications for experiments are discussed.Comment: 11 pages, references added, accepted in Physical Review

    Preembryo Personhood: An Assessment of the President’s Council Arguments

    The President’s Council on Bioethics has addressed the moral status of human preembryos in its reports on stem cell research and human therapeutic cloning. Although the Council has been criticized for being hand-picked to favor the right-to-life viewpoint concerning human preembryos, it has embraced the idea that the right-to-life position should be defended in secular terms. This is an important feature of the Council’s work, and it demonstrates a recognition of the need for genuine engagement between opposing sides in the debate over stem cell research. To promote this engagement, the Council has stated in secular terms several arguments for the personhood of human preembryos. This essay presents and critiques those arguments, and it concludes that they are unsuccessful. If the best arguments in support of the personhood of human preembryos have been presented by the Council, then there are no reasonable secular arguments in support of that view

    Laser printing of silver-based micro-wires in ZrO2 substrate for smart implant applications

    Smart implants are endowed with functions of sensing, actuating and control to solve problems that may arise during their use. The assembly of these functions along the implant surface is still a challenge. However, with the advent of 3D printing, it is possible to print on implants’ surface, communication channels or micro-antennas or even sensoric/actuating areas. Hence, a positive impact on the long-term performance of the implants (including hip, dental and knee) may be expected with the proposed approach. Despite titanium and Ti6Al4V titanium alloy are the standard choice for implants fabrication, 3Y-TZP (tetragonal 3% mol yttria-stabilized zirconia) has emerged as a ceramic material suitable to overcome titanium alloy problems, due to its numerous advantages. In this sense, this work is concerned with the ability of printing silver-based communication system in zirconia substrates by using laser technology. For this purpose, micro-cavities were created on ZrO2 substrate, where the silver powder was placed and sintered into them. Through the laser approach, silver-based wires with great quality and low resistivity values were achieved. The flexural strength results showed that the mechanical resistance of zirconia disks was affected by laser micro-wire printing, which decreased as the laser passage was performed.
