First order optical potentials and 25 to 40 MeV proton elastic scattering
The differential cross sections and analyzing powers from the elastic
scattering of 25 and 40 MeV protons from many nuclei have been studied.
Analyses have been made using a fully microscopic model of proton-nucleus
scattering seeking to establish a means appropriate for use in analyses of
radioactive beam scattering from hydrogen with ion energies 25A and 40A MeV.Comment: 9 pages, RevTeX, 4 figure
The pion transition form factor and the pion distribution amplitude
Recent BaBaR data on the pion transition form factor, whose Q^2 dependence is
much steeper then predicted by asymptotic Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), have
caused a renewed interest in its theoretical description. We present here a
formalism based on a model independent low energy description and a high energy
description based on QCD, which match at a scale Q_0. The high energy
description incorporates a flat pion distribution amplitude, phi(x)=1, at the
matching scale Q_0 and QCD evolution from Q_0 to Q>Q_0. The flat pion
distribution is connected, through soft pion theorems and chiral symmetry, to
the pion valance parton distribution at the same low scale Q_0. The procedure
leads to a good description of the data, and incorporating additional twist

Nonperturbative Effects in Gluon Radiation and Photoproduction of Quark Pairs
We introduce a nonperturbative interaction for light-cone fluctuations
containing quarks and gluons. The interaction squeezes the transverse
size of these fluctuations in the photon and one does not need to simulate this
effect via effective quark masses. The strength of this interaction is fixed by
data. Data on diffractive dissociation of hadrons and photons show that the
nonperturbative interaction of gluons is much stronger. We fix the parameters
for the nonperturbative quark-gluon interaction by data for diffractive
dissociation to large masses (triple-Pomeron regime). This allows us to predict
nuclear shadowing for gluons which turns out to be not as strong as
perturbative QCD predicts. We expect a delayed onset of gluon shadowing at shadowing of quarks. Gluon shadowing turns out to be nearly scale
invariant up to virtualities due to presence of a semihard
scale characterizing the strong nonperturbative interaction of gluons. We use
the same concept to improve our description of gluon bremsstrahlung which is
related to the distribution function for a quark-gluon fluctuation and the
interaction cross section of a fluctuation with a nucleon. We expect
the nonperturbative interaction to suppress dramatically the gluon radiation at
small transverse momenta compared to perturbative calculations.Comment: 58 pages of Latex including 11 figures. Shadowing for soft gluons and

Nuclear Shadowing in DIS: Numerical Solution of the Evolution Equation for the Green Function
Within a light-cone QCD formalism based on the Green function technique
incorporating color transparency and coherence length effects we study nuclear
shadowing in deep-inelastic scattering at moderately small Bjorken x_{Bj}.
Calculations performed so far were based only on approximations leading to an
analytical harmonic oscillatory form of the Green function. We present for the
first time an exact numerical solution of the evolution equation for the Green
function using realistic form of the dipole cross section and nuclear density
function. We compare numerical results for nuclear shadowing with previous

Electron Dephasing in Mesoscopic Metal Wires
The low-temperature behavior of the electron phase coherence time,
, in mesoscopic metal wires has been a subject of controversy
recently. Whereas theory predicts that in narrow wires should
increase as as the temperature is lowered, many samples exhibit
a saturation of below about 1 K. We review here the experiments
we have performed recently to address this issue. In particular we emphasize
that in sufficiently pure Ag and Au samples we observe no saturation of
down to our base temperature of 40 mK. In addition, the measured
magnitude of is in excellent quantitative agreement with the
prediction of the perturbative theory of Altshuler, Aronov and Khmelnitskii. We
discuss possible explanations why saturation of is observed in
many other samples measured in our laboratory and elsewhere, and answer the
criticisms raised recently by Mohanty and Webb regarding our work.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures; to appear in proceedings of conference

Parity violating target asymmetry in electron - proton scattering
We analyze the parity-violating (PV) components of the analyzing power in
elastic electron-proton scattering and discuss their sensitivity to the strange
quark contributions to the proton weak form factors. We point out that the
component of the analyzing power along the momentum transfer is independent of
the electric weak form factor and thus compares favorably with the PV beam
asymmetry for a determination of the strangeness magnetic moment. We also show
that the transverse component could be used for constraining the strangeness
radius. Finally, we argue that a measurement of both components could give
experimental information on the strangeness axial charge.Comment: 24 pages, Latex, 5 eps figures, submitted to Phys.Rev.
Plasmonic excitations in noble metals: The case of Ag
The delicate interplay between plasmonic excitations and interband
transitions in noble metals is described by means of {\it ab initio}
calculations and a simple model in which the conduction electron plasmon is
coupled to the continuum of electron-hole pairs. Band structure effects,
specially the energy at which the excitation of the -like bands takes place,
determine the existence of a subthreshold plasmonic mode, which manifests
itself in Ag as a sharp resonance at 3.8 eV. However, such a resonance is not
observed in the other noble metals. Here, this different behavior is also
analyzed and an explanation is provided.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure
Color Transparency versus Quantum Coherence in Electroproduction of Vector Mesons off Nuclei
So far no theoretical tool for the comprehensive description of exclusive
electroproduction of vector mesons off nuclei at medium energies has been
developed. We suggest a light-cone QCD formalism which is valid at any energy
and incorporates formation effects (color transparency), the coherence length
and the gluon shadowing. At medium energies color transparency (CT) and the
onset of coherence length (CL) effects are not easily separated. Indeed,
although nuclear transparency measured by the HERMES experiment rises with Q^2,
it agrees with predictions of the vector dominance model (VDM) without any CT
effects. Our new results and observations are: (i) the good agreement with the
VDM found earlier is accidental and related to the specific correlation between
Q^2 and CL for HERMES kinematics; (ii) CT effects are much larger than have
been estimated earlier within the two channel approximation. They are even
stronger at low than at high energies and can be easily identified by HERMES or
at JLab; (iii) gluon shadowing which is important at high energies is
calculated and included; (iv) our parameter-free calculations explain well
available data for variation of nuclear transparency with virtuality and energy
of the photon; (v) predictions for electroproduction of \rho and \phi are
provided for future measurements at HERMES and JLab.Comment: Latex 57 pages and 17 figure
