Consistency of Kernel Estimators of Heteroscedastic and Autocorrelated Covariance Matrices
Conditions are derived for the consistency of kernel estimators of the covariance matrix of a sum of vectors of dependent heterogeneous random variables, which match those of the currently best-known conditions for the central limit theorem, as required for a unified theory of asymptotic inference. These include finite moments of order no more than 2 + for > 0, trending variances, and variables which are near-epoch dependent on a mixing process, but not necessarily mixing. The results are also proved for the case of sample-dependent bandwidths.kernel estimator;matrices
Modified Paschos-Wolfenstein relation and extraction of weak mixing angle sin^2 theta_W
The NuTeV collaboration reported anomalously large weak mixing angle sin^2
theta_W in comparison with the standard model prediction. Neutrino and
antineutrino charged- and neutral-current events are analyzed for extracting
sin^2 theta_W. Although the Paschos-Wolfenstein relation is not directly used
in the analysis, it plays an important role in the determination. Noting that
the target nucleus, iron, is not an isoscalar nucleus, we derive a
leading-order expression for a modified Paschos-Wolfenstein relation for
nuclei, which may have neutron excess. Then, using charge and baryon-number
conservations for nuclei, we discuss a nuclear correction in the sin^2 theta_W
determination. It is noteworthy that nuclear modifications are different
between valence up- and down-quark distributions. We show this difference
effect on the NuTeV sin^2 theta_W deviation.Comment: 5 pages, REVTeX4.0, revtex4.cls, url.sty, natbib.sty, revsymb.sty,

History of depression and survival after acute myocardial infarction
Objective: To compare survival in post-myocardial (MI) participants from the Enhancing Recovery In Coronary Heart Disease (ENRICHD) clinical trial with a first episode of major depression (MD) and those with recurrent MID, which is a risk factor for mortality after acute MI. Recent reports suggest that the level of risk may depend on whether the comorbid MD is a first or a recurrent episode. Methods: Survival was compared over a median of 29 months in 370 patients with an initial episode of MD, 550 with recurrent MD, and 408 who were free of depression. Results: After adjusting for an all-cause mortality risk score, initial Beck Depression Inventory score, and the use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor antidepressants, patients with a first episode of MD had poorer survival (18.4% all-cause mortality) than those with recurrent MD (11.8%) (hazard ratio (HR)=1.4; 95% Confidence Interval (CI)=1.0-2.0; p=.05). Both first depression (HR=3.1; 95% CI=1.6-6.1; p=.001) and recurrent MD (HR=2.2; 95% CI=1.1-4.4; p=.03) had significantly poorer survival than did the nondepressed patients (3.4%). A secondary analysis of deaths classified as probably due to a cardiovascular cause resulted in similar HRs, but the difference between depression groups was not significant. Conclusions: Both initial and recurrent episodes of MD predict shorter survival after acute MI, but initial MD episodes are more strongly predictive than recurrent episodes. Exploratory analyses suggest that this cannot be explained by more severe heart disease at index, poorer response to depression treatment, or a higher risk of cerebrovascular disease in patients with initial MD episodes
Threshold Photo/Electro Pion Production - Working Group Summary
We summarize the pertinent experimental and theoretical developments in the
field of pion photo- and electroproduction in the threshold region. We discuss
which experiments and which calculations should be done/performed in the
future.Comment: plain TeX (macro included), 6pp, summary talk presented at the

The pion transition form factor and the pion distribution amplitude
Recent BaBaR data on the pion transition form factor, whose Q^2 dependence is
much steeper then predicted by asymptotic Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), have
caused a renewed interest in its theoretical description. We present here a
formalism based on a model independent low energy description and a high energy
description based on QCD, which match at a scale Q_0. The high energy
description incorporates a flat pion distribution amplitude, phi(x)=1, at the
matching scale Q_0 and QCD evolution from Q_0 to Q>Q_0. The flat pion
distribution is connected, through soft pion theorems and chiral symmetry, to
the pion valance parton distribution at the same low scale Q_0. The procedure
leads to a good description of the data, and incorporating additional twist
three effects, to an excellent description of the data.Comment: 11 pages, 5 postscript figures, uses epsfig.sty and 1 appendi
The Off-diagonal Goldberger-Treiman Relation and Its Discrepancy
We study the off-diagonal Goldberger-Treiman relation (ODGTR) and its
discrepancy (ODGTD) in the N, Delta, pi sector through O(p^2) using heavy
baryon chiral perturbation theory. To this order, the ODGTD and axial vector N
to Delta transition radius are determined solely by low energy constants. Loop
corrections appear at O(p^4). For low-energy constants of natural size, the
ODGTD would represent a ~ 2% correction to the ODGTR. We discuss the
implications of the ODGTR and ODGTD for lattice and quark model calculations of
the transition form factors and for parity-violating electroexcitation of the
Delta.Comment: 11 pages, 1 eps figur
Reaction and Axial Vector Coupling
The reaction is studied in the region of low
to investigate the effect of deuteron structure and width of the
resonance on the differential cross section. The results are used to extract
the axial vector coupling from the experimental data on
this reaction. The possibility to determine this coupling from electroweak
interaction experiments with high intensity electron accelerators is discussed.Comment: 14 pages, REVTEX, 5 figure
Statistical Model of Superconductivity in a 2D Binary Boson-Fermion Mixture
A two-dimensional (2D) assembly of noninteracting, temperature-dependent,
composite-boson Cooper pairs (CPs) in chemical and thermal equilibrium with
unpaired fermions is examined in a binary boson-fermion statistical model as
the superconducting singularity temperature is approached from above. The model
is derived from {\it first principles} for the BCS model interfermion
interaction from three extrema of the system Helmholtz free energy (subject to
constant pairable-fermion number) with respect to: a) the pairable-fermion
distribution function; b) the number of excited (bosonic) CPs, i.e., with
nonzero total momenta--usually ignored in BCS theory--and with the appropriate
(linear, as opposed to quadratic) dispersion relation that arises from the
Fermi sea; and c) the number of CPs with zero total momenta. Compared with the
BCS theory condensate, higher singularity temperatures for the Bose-Einstein
condensate are obtained in the binary boson-fermion mixture model which are in
rough agreement with empirical critical temperatures for quasi-2D

Symmetry of the Atomic Electron Density in Hartree, Hartree-Fock, and Density Functional Theory
The density of an atom in a state of well-defined angular momentum has a
specific finite spherical harmonic content, without and with interactions.
Approximate single-particle schemes, such as the Hartree, Hartree-Fock, and
Local Density Approximations, generally violate this feature. We analyze, by
means of perturbation theory, the degree of this violation and show that it is
small. The correct symmetry of the density can be assured by a
constrained-search formulation without significantly altering the calculated
energies. We compare our procedure to the (different) common practice of
spherically averaging the self-consistent potential. Kohn-Sham density
functional theory with the exact exchange-correlation potential has the correct
finite spherical harmonic content in its density; but the corresponding exact
single particle potential and wavefunctions contain an infinite number of
spherical harmonics.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures. Expanded discussion of spherical harmonic
